Development, spatial structure and functions of shopping malls in Poland

    Get PDF
The subject of this paper is space-related and functional aspects of the development of Polish shopping malls. In the first part, the article discusses the stages and level of development of shopping centers in Poland. The second part of the article is devoted to the present-day spatial structure of shopping malls and their distribution first of all in biggest cities of the country. Large-lot objects occupy more like 50% of the city's shopping area. The third part of the paper concentrated on the role of the shopping malls in the contemporary live of Polish cities. Larg format retailing plays a significant economic and social role. By generating thousands of jobs, it swells the city budget, satisfies the ever more refined shopping needs of residents, creates new spaces and forms of spending leisure time. Shopping malls leads also to dysfunctions: spatial and social conflicts. The last part of the paper show the possible directions of the development of shopping malls in Poland. Nowoczesny handel odgrywa znaczącą rolę gospodarczą i społeczną. Generując tysiące miejsc pracy, zasila dochody budżetu miasta, zaspokaja coraz to bardziej wyszukane potrzeby zakupowe mieszkańców, kreuje nowe przestrzenie i formy spędzania wolnego czasu. Lokalizacja kolejnych centrów handlowych prowadzi też do dysfunkcji ‒ konfliktów przestrzennych i społecznych.

Acute toxicity of malathion, dichlorvos and temephos in climbing perch (Anabas testudineus)

    Get PDF
Malathion, dichlorvos and temephos are used globally to control a wide range of invertebrate pests especially in Malaysia. These pesticides usually enter aquatic environment by direct application or through overspray, runoff and watersheds. However, applications of pesticides may cause adverse impacts to many non-target organisms such as fish. The objective for this study was to determine the 96 hours lethal concentration (LC50) of each pesticide in climbing perch, Anabas testudineus. A total of 130 A. testudineus was subjected to 13 aquariums. Fish were exposed to different concentrations of each pesticide for 96 hours. Fish were observed daily and dead fish were removed immediately. The 96h LC50 value for malathion, dichlorvos and temephos was determined as 0.25 mg/L, 2.35 mg/L and 25.0 mg/L respectively. The results obtained were based on the probit analysis method as described by Finney 1952. From the values obtained, malathion, dichlorvos and temephos can be classified as highly toxic pesticides since it can kill 50 percent of the population even in lower concentration. Thus, the information in this study can be used as a guide to help environmental management to assure the effective use of these pesticides and to prevent indiscriminate use of pesticides

„I will survive” – Representation of the Holocaust in Contemporary Art Jane Korman, a Jewish artist, filmed the video „Dancing Auschwitz” on a trip to former concentration camps with her three children and her father, Adolek Kohn, who is a Holocaust survivor. The film shows three generations of an Jewish family dancing to the Gloria Gaynor song “I Will Survive” in front of Holocaust land marks in Poland, including infamous rail tracks and “Arbeit Macht Frei” sign and a memorial in Łódź, where Adolek Kohn and his wife spent most of his youth during World War II. This video is a demonstration of the will to survive. Moreover, Korman’film shows other places in Poland like The Main Market Square in Kraków, a Polish synagogue or one of the bus station from eastern Poland. These places may represent the sites and the traces of the History in the contemporary Polish reality which has been radically transformed after Auschwitz. Memories are a way to remain connected to the past. The great power of the images, the clichés of the unimaginable trauma of the Holocaust, is still in our imagination and in the landscape of Polish cities. In my presentation I will not only try to explain the abovementioned case but I will focus also on some others examples of the idea. One of the Polish projects that bring about associations with the Holocaust and the memory of Nazi camps is „Swimming Pool” („Pływalnia”, 2003) by Rafał Jakubowicz (projection, two videos, postcard). By projecting the Hebrew equivalent of the word „swimming pool” on the wall of the former synagogue (in 1940 the Nazis converted synagogue into a swimming pool for the Wehrmacht), the artist managed to reactivate this place, to revive its memory and transform it into a living monument. In his video, entitled „Swimming Pool”(13 min.), Jakubowicz is showing the interior of the building that provokes the associations with the concentration camps. Jane Korman, a Jewish artist, filmed the video „Dancing Auschwitz” on a trip to former concentration camps with her three children and her father, Adolek Kohn, who is a Holocaust survivor. Foreign bodies in the airways in children

Foreign bodies in the airways in children are a very important diagnostic and therapeutic problem. With these cases meet both emergency rooms, emergency departments, general pediatric wars and ENT wards. Aspiration of a foreign body is a frequent factor causing respiratory diseases along with its inefficiency and one of the more frequent causes of sudden deaths in children up to 6 years of age. In the majority of retrospective studies, aspiration of foreign bodies concerns children aged 1-3 years, with a male predominance. The main clinical symptoms accompanying the presence of a foreign body in the airways are cough, dyspnoea, vomiting. IIn each case, diagnostic imaging should be carried out. The basic test is a chest X-ray. In cases of prolonged inflammation of the respiratory tract in children, despite the negative history and no changes in chest radiological examination, the aspiration of the foreign body should be considered. In any case of suspicion of a foreign body, an absolute indication is bronchoscopy
