Big data moment and faceted theory: a structured review

    Get PDF
Over the last years, information growth has been the source of a large volume and variety of data, therefore new processes to represent, organize, seek and retrieve the information are needed. The background theory that supports the big data settings is diverse, however, one theory has deserved special attention in the literature, not only as a model for structuring data but also for locating information: the faceted theory. In this paper, a brief review of the literature about big data and faceted theory is presented. According to literature, web system architecture based on the faceted analysis appears to be highly common even in the big data settings. Regarding description, navigation, seek and search, and retrieval of the information, the authors write up the faceted theory, methods, and models in a digital environment. Nevertheless, more theoretical and empirical work is necessary to firm up this standpoint. Keywords: Faceted theory, Big Data, Information seeking, Information retrieval, Web system architectur

Paper has been published in Proceedings of the National Conference on Information Management in Digital Libraries held on 2-4 August, 2006, organized by central library, IIT Kharagpur. The study presents the status of automation in special libraries and information centers of Gwalior District in Madhya Pradesh. Aims at understanding and analyzing the various problems faced by the authorities and the staff during the process of automation. The methodology adopted for the present study is survey using a structured questionnaire. The lack of staff, hesitancy and lack of attitude towards automation and unsatisfactory library software problems are the major hindrances to speedy automation. However, 50% of special libraries opting for automation show that the libraries have a mind to adapt to the new changes and the other libraries will follow the suit.Central Librar

This study examined the relationship between ICT competence of librarians and their job performance in the libraries of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and Abia State University, Uturu. Three research questions were answered and three hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted simple linear correlation design involving Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The population of the study was 136 librarians working in the libraries. The instrument used for data collection was rating scale titled librarians Information and Communication Technology Competency and Job Performance (LICTCJP). The research questions were answered using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC), while the hypotheses were tested using t-test of the significance of Pearson r. The findings of the study revealed that there is a very high and significant relationship between ICT competence of librarians and; cataloguing and classification of information; Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) but there is a low but significant relationship between ICT competence of librarians and reference services provided in the libraries. Based on these findings the researchers recommend that ICT competence should be a major criteria for the employment of librarians in various libraries; the university administrations should provide on-the-job ICT training to the librarians in the various libraries; and the librarians should be monitored to ensure that the services provided in the libraries are done using ICT in order to meet up with international standards

Medical Library and Information System for India: A Proposal

    Get PDF
This research concerns the design and planning of a medical library and information system for India. Based on a questionnaire survey, it examines the strengths and weaknesses of the existing resources, services and cooperative activities in Indian medical and health science libraries. The study reveals the lack of coordination or resource sharing activities in these libraries and concludes that owing to inadequate budgetary provisions, document collections and a wide gap between the present service provisions and actual requirements, there is need to rationalise and supplement the existing infrastructural resources into a nationwide networking system. In order to gain information about the concept and planning of regional library systems and the need for a regional library or regional library unit, four different regional medical library and information systems in the U.K., namely Oxford, South West Thames, North Western and Trent, were surveyed. The focus is to ascertain in what ways the development of a regional library system could result in improvement of library services in the region and the factors that lead to particular successes (or failures) in operation and administration of direct regional support services. The survey also examines the nature of relationships between the regional library unit and member libraries and the extent to which regional services are used and valued. The proposed system for India (MEDLIS) is based on the particular context to which it relates. The results of the design are mainly presented by either descriptive or analytical models, decided by the category of issues involved. The research has focused on the organisational aspects of system planning and attempts to delineate and analyse those factors that will ultimately govern the configuration and functions of a national medical library networking system and its units on a regional basis. However, macro-considerations of technology are inevitable and three alternate programmes are suggested. Recommendations are made about the future developments of a national medical library system and a possible implementation plan is outlined
