Scale-Induced Closure for Approximations of Kinetic Equations
The order-of-magnitude method proposed by Struchtrup (Phys. Fluids 16(11):3921-3934, 2004) is a new closure procedure for the infinite moment hierarchy in kinetic theory of gases, taking into account the scaling of the moments. The scaling parameter is the Knudsen number Kn, which is the mean free path of a particle divided by the system size. In this paper, we generalize the order-of-magnitude method and derive a formal theory of scale-induced closures on the level of the kinetic equation. Generally, different orders of magnitude appear through balancing the stiff production term of order 1/Kn with the advection part of the kinetic equation. A cascade of scales is then induced by different powers ofKn. The new closure produces a moment distribution function that respects the scaling of a Chapman-Enskog expansion. The collision operator induces a decomposition of the non-equilibrium part of the distribution function in terms of the Knudsen number. The first iteration of the new closure can be shown to be of second-order in Kn under moderate conditions on the collision operator, to be L 2-stable and to possess an entropy law. The derivation of higher order approximations is also possible. We illustrate the features of this approach in the framework of a 16 discrete velocities mode
Ein Status Quo: Haben Milchkühe Zahnprobleme?
Dental abnormalities in cows have seldomly been examined in research and veterinary check-up. This study estimated the prevalence of dental problems in cows. The skulls of 151 adult (> 4 years) dairy cows (Brown Swiss cattle n=81, Swiss
Fleckvieh n=70) were categorized into three age groups (AK1: 4-6 / AK2: 7-9 / AK3: 10-16 years old) and examined for the existence of 11 dental cheek teeth abnormalities, based on well-known dental pathologies in horses. The four most
prevalent dental abnormalities found were presence of abnormal spaces between 2 adjacent cheek teeth (Diastema), parodontosis, wavemouth, and food packing between cheek teeth. In 85% of all recorded skulls, 1 or more abnormalities were recorded. There were no differences in the occurrence of dental abnormalities in the
two breeds. Older animals of AK3 showed more abnormalities than younger animals, but also in the lower age categories, in average 2 abnormalities per skull were recorded. 36% of all skulls showed the presence of Diastema, which has been
described as one of the most painful oral abnormalities in horse. Dental abnormalities are prevalent in cows and probably a not recognized cause of health disorders
Relative validation of a food frequency questionnaire to estimate food intake in an adult population
Background: Scientifically valid descriptions of dietary intake at population level are crucial for investigating diet effects on health and disease. Food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) are the most common dietary tools used in large epidemiological studies. Objective: To examine the relative validity of a newly developed FFQ to be used as dietary assessment tool in epidemiological studies. Design: Validity was evaluated by comparing the FFQ and a 4-day weighed food record (4-d FR) at nutrient and food group levels, Spearman’s correlations, Bland–Altman analysis and Wilcoxon rank sum tests were used. Fifty-six participants completed a paper format FFQ and a 4-d FR within 4 weeks. Results: Corrected correlations between the two instruments ranged from 0.27 (carbohydrates) to 0.55 (protein), and at food group level from 0.09 (soup) to 0.92 (alcohol). Nine out of 25 food groups showed correlations > 0.5, indicating moderate validity. More than half the food groups were overestimated in the FFQ, especially vegetables (82.8%) and fruits (56.3%). Water, tea and coffee were underestimated (–14.0%). Conclusions: The FFQ showed moderate relative validity for protein and the food groups fruits, egg, meat, sausage, nuts, salty snacks and beverages. This study supports the use of the FFQ as an acceptable tool for assessing nutrition as a health determinant in large epidemiological studies
DAXplus family: Ein Aktienindex zur Darstellung der Performance von Familienunternehmen
In January 2010 the Deutsche Börse Group introduced two family firm stock indices. Both indices are calculated as price and performance indices and extend the number of investment strategy indices of Deutsche Börse Group. The DAXplus Family is an all-share index whereas the DAXplus Family 30 represents a selection index of the 30 largest and most liquid Prime Standard family firms of Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FSE). The index development traces back to a mutual research project between Deutsche Börse Group and Technische Universität München (TUM). In order to be applicable for DAXplus Family index inclusion, a firm has to fulfil a founding family definition: the founder(s) and/or related family members have to control at least 25% of voting rights or at least 5% voting rights if the founder or the family is not only shareholder but also active management or supervisory board member. Out of 123 family firms that were included in the DAXplus Family at index introduction in January 2010, about 95% (117 firms) qualified with both elements of the definition - required control of voting rights and board representation. Only 23% of the index firms are characterised by blockholdings of the family below 25%. The DAXplus Family 30 has a correlation of 99.6% with the all-share index DAXplus Family and a correlation of 83.6% with the German blue chip index DAX. A performance backtesting of the DAXplus Family 30 from June 2002 to July 2010 revealed an annualized return of 11.5% at an annualized volatility of 24%. Further details about the indices' theoretical and empirical foundation, underlying concept, main features as well as descriptive characteristics are presented in this primer. --Family Firm,Style Index,Ownership Structure,Corporate Governance
Quantitative real time PCR does not reliably detect single fecal indicator bacteria in drinking water
The microbial quality of drinking and environmental water is usually determined by culture-based detection of fecal indicator bacteria according to ISO reference methods 16649-1 and 7899-2, respectively. Because of an increasing demand for rapid, culture-independent methods, we tested three quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) approaches for the simultaneous detection of both, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus spp., using either 16S rRNA or 16S rDNA as a target molecule. Filter sterilized drinking water was artificially contaminated with bacteria from either high or low nutrient culture conditions and directly analyzed after membrane filtration without any other enrichment. Depending on the culture condition used, qPCR analyses revealed a lower limit of detection of 1–10 E. coli/100 ml and 10–100 E. faecalis/100 ml, respectively. In addition, the microbial quality of different surface water samples was monitored. The analyses revealed a clear correlation between viable cell counts and qPCR data. However, the safe and reliable detection of 1 CFU/100 ml failed.</jats:p
Counteridenticals and dream reports: A unified analysis
Counteridenticals are counterfactual conditional sentences whose antecedent clauses contain an identity statement, e.g. If I were you, I’d buy the blue dress. Here, we argue that counteridenticals are best analyzed along the lines of dream reports. After showing that counteridenticals and dream reports exhibit striking grammatical and perceptual parallels, we suggest an analysis of counteridenticals with Percus and Sauerland’s (2003) analysis of dream reports. Following their proposal, we propose to make use of concept generators, realized as centered worlds. To this end, we argue that the presence of if licenses the presence of an imagine-operator, which constitutes the attitude the antecedent clause ‘x be-PAST y’ is taken under; The speaker predicates, in the imagine mode, the consequent property to his/her imagined self. To capture the different degrees of identification between the subject and the predicate of the identity statement of counteridenticals’ antecedents observed in the literature, we incorporate Percus and Sharvit’s (2014) notion of asymmetric be into the analysis. This proposal has several advantages over existing analyses (Lakoff, 1996; Kocurek, 2016) of counteridentical meaning, as it both explains the different degrees of identification observed for counteridenticals and correctly predicts the parallels between counteridenticals and dream reports
Manifest\u27 Destiny: The Fate of the \u27Manifest Disregard of the Law\u27 Doctrine After Hall Street v. Mattel
The Federal Arbitration Act was enacted in 1925 in reaction to widespread judicial resistance to arbitration. While it is difficult to imagine that the drafters of this legislation could have envisioned how prominent arbitration would become in the United States, it is clear that their intention was to ensure that contracts to arbitrate would be enforced and that the intent of the parties would be maintained. In the more than eighty years since the passage of the Act, courts have repeatedly been called on to interpret the Act in order to determine its effect on real world situations. Recently, the Supreme Court determined that the grounds for vacatur and modification outlined in sections 10 and 11 of the FAA are exclusive. However, the Court failed to explain what effect their holding would have on the longstanding doctrine that allows for modification and vacatur of arbitral awards based on a manifest disregard of the law by the arbitrator. Since then, courts have disagreed about how to move forward, producing a split in the circuits that has become ripe for Supreme Court intervention
Breastfeeding in Custody Proceedings: A Modern-Day Manifestation of Liberal and Conservative Family Traditions
This Comment contends that cultural and legal representations of breastfeeding in custody determinations highlight contradictory notions of motherhood and family that mirror liberal and conservative family traditions thought to be long dead
punktach handlowych. Specyficzne walory produktów regionalnych, a w szczególności
tradycyjnych artykułów żywnościowych, decydują o ich oryginalności i autentyczności
oraz o tym że są one chętniej nabywane niż produkty masowe. Potwierdzają to badania
empiryczne, przeprowadzone w województwie opolskim. Regionalne produkty
Opolszczyzny, nie tylko żywnościowe, są również szansą na pokazanie i promocję regionu,
z którego pochodzą
