Poster presented at the 2017 Health Sciences Research Day which was organized and sponsored by the University of Missouri School of Medicine Research Council and held on November 9, 2017.Conclusion: Accurate clinical charting and information is highly critical for quality patient care and follow up ; The utilization of MRI fusion biopsy identified prostate cancer in 60.7% of screened patients compared to historical 25% using standard biopsy ; Our results show the potential need for a charting template that captures all relevant information, otherwise there is variable and incomplete data collection. This demonstrates the potential need for a phase 2 of this project

Montessori Education at a Distance, Part 1: A Survey of Montessori Educators’ Response to a Global Pandemic

    Get PDF
The transition to distance learning in the spring of 2020 caused by COVID-19 was particularly challenging for Montessori educators and students because key elements of the Method were not directly transferable to this new and hastily designed format. Hands-on learning with Montessori materials and learning in a community, as well as careful teacher observation, could not be easily replicated when children were learning from home. To understand how educators applied Montessori principles to serve children and families in these highly unusual circumstances, we surveyed Early Childhood and Elementary Montessori teachers about how they translated core elements of Montessori education to a distance-learning environment. The overall results suggest that Montessori distance-learning arrangements balanced live videoconference experiences for children with offline hands-on activities, while also relying on parents’ and caregivers’ involvement. Teachers reported that they largely designed learning experiences themselves, without significant support or guidance from school leaders. Still, teachers reported that they were able to uphold Montessori principles to only a moderate degree under the circumstances. While teachers understandably hunger for support, professional connections, and a return to the classroom experiences that drew them to the field of Montessori education, this study highlights factors that may affect the transition back to school for teachers, parents and caregivers, and students when face-to-face instruction resumes for all children

Memorials of endurance and adventure : exhibiting British polar exploration, 1819 – c.1939

Electronic version excludes material for which permission has not been granted by the rights holderOver eighty polar-themed exhibitions were held in Britain between 1819 and the 1930s, a time of intense exploration of both the Arctic and Antarctic. These varied from panoramas and human exhibits to displays of ‘relics’, equipment, photographs and artwork, waxworks and displays shown as part of a Great Exhibition. This period also saw the creation of the first dedicated polar museums. These displays were visited by thousands of people throughout the country, helping to mediate the subject of exploration for a public audience. Despite this, the role exhibitions played in forming popular views of the polar regions has not been fully assessed. This thesis addresses this gap. It is the first to consider all the polar exhibitions held during this period as a collective body, making it possible to study how they developed over time and in response to changing circumstances. The thesis uses a variety of archival sources to both reconstruct the displays and place them in their historical and museological contexts. The study shows that exhibitions evolved in response to changes both in the museum sector and in exploration culture. It demonstrates that, while they were originally identified with the shows of the entertainment industry, polar exhibitions began to take on more of the characteristics of museum displays. At the same time their dominant themes changed; the natural world was relegated in favour of ideas relating to the human experience of the regions such as heroism, adventure and everyday life in an exotic environment. While other media may have been more effective in disseminating ideas about exploration, visitors could find the experience of visiting an exhibition more compelling. This thesis contributes to our understanding of this distinct role that exhibitions played in presenting the polar regions to the British public

The professional ethics of Christian lawyers

    Get PDF
This thesis explores how Christian lawyers in Australia negotiate the two ethical worlds to which they are subject: the ‘ethical world’ of legal practice, and the ‘ethical world’ of the Christian faith. It begins by considering the body of normative literature (both secular and faith-based) about the ethical world of lawyers. Some of the main themes of this literature include: - The nature of the role of lawyer, and the moral justifications for that role; - The lawyer-client relationship and in particular, how tensions between the client’s proposed instructions and the lawyer’s personal values ought be resolved; - The sources from which a lawyer ought seek ethical guidance in the resolution of a legal dispute; - The conduct of legal practice more broadly. The thesis continues by classifying the faith-based literature into four ‘models’ or approaches to faith-based ethical decision-making in legal practice. The models focus on literature written from the perspective of the Christian faith, but literature written from the perspective of other faiths has been referenced where there are comparisons. The thesis then explores the views of a group of Christian lawyers in both metropolitan and regional areas in Australia about the key themes of the normative literature. These views were expounded during semi-structured interviews with the participants. Conclusions are then drawn about whether there are parallels between the themes and models of the normative literature, and the views and approaches of the lawyers interviewed

Evaluating GREEN as a New Risk Reduction and Mitigation Strategy in the Petroleum Industry

PresentationThe Petroleum industry uses different risk mitigation strategies to mitigate potential failures within its facilities. Yet, these strategies could not prevent major accidents, on different scales, from occurring as they negatively impact the industry. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate Generated Risk Event Effect Neutralization (GREEN) as a new tool to select adequate risk mitigation strategy to prevent potential failures in petroleum industry. More than fifty major accidents in the industry underwent GREEN evaluation and compared with existing risk mitigation strategies used in to mitigate potential failures

The 2016 release of Foundations in Wisconsin marks the 35th edition of the print directory and the 16th edition of the online version. The directory is designed as a research tool for grantseekers interested in locating information on private, corporate, and community foundations registered in Wisconsin. Each entry in this new edition has been updated or reviewed to provide the most current information available. Most of the data was drawn from IRS 990-PF tax returns filed by the foundations. Additional information was obtained from surveys, foundation websites, and annual reports. This edition paints a very positive picture of financial growth for Wisconsin foundations. Both grant and asset totals have risen to all-time highs. Of particular note, total grants broke the 600millionbarrier,increasingby8600 million barrier, increasing by 8% to 623 million. Additionally, 58 new foundations have been identified this year. (See page 269 for the complete list.) The following table illustrates the 10-year financial pattern as documented in Foundations in Wisconsin.https://epublications.marquette.edu/lib_fiw/1014/thumbnail.jp

The upstream industry uses diverse risk mitigation approaches to mitigate eventual failures within its facilities. Yet, these approaches could not avert major accidents, on different scales, from happening as they negatively affect the industry. The purpose of this paper is to assess Generated Risk Event Effect Neutralization (GREEN) as a new tool to select suitable risk mitigation approach to prevent prospective failures in upstream industry. More than 200 hundred major accidents in the industry underwent GREEN evaluation and compared with existing risk mitigation approaches used in to mitigate eventual failures. Kuwait\u27s’ Mina Al-Ahmadi explosion was chosen as a case study to apply GREEN. The results of GREEN analyses were compared to both petroleum industry\u27s standards and best practices, as well as the evaluation from the design team at Kuwait\u27s Mina Al-Ahmadi to validate the result

What New Faculty Need to Know, But Don\u27t Know to Ask

A smooth transition to life at an academic institution and the surrounding community is essential to the professional careers of new faculty members. The transition begins during the hiring process and startup package negotiations. Once at an institution, aspects of academia including teaching, proposal writing, and the tenure process inevitably generate issues and concerns for new faculty members. Research has shown that mentoring new faculty members early in their academic career can have significant impact on professional success. This is especially true at a research-based institution where the demands of funded scholarship add an extra level of complexity. A survey was conducted of faculty members at Missouri University of Science & Technology (Missouri S&T) in their first three years of a tenure track appointment to determine areas of concern for new faculty members. This paper presents the survey results, discusses the issues raised by the survey, and makes recommendations for effective mentoring relationships. Specific questions for new faculty members discussed in this paper include: What to look for in a mentor? What to consider in selecting where to submit papers? When to say yes and when to say no to service? Where to begin the hunt for research funding? What are quality resources for teaching? The paper also provides insight to mentors relative to junior faculty members\u27 concerns. This paper evaluates issues that are critical to forming effective mentoring relationships. Guidance offered provides value to mentors in understanding which areas are of greatest concern to new faculty. It provides information to proteges as well in determining key characteristics of an effective mentor
