In the post-modern world finding the right answer to the crucial question about the essence of female identity is increasingly difficult. This is due to the fact that we are on a constant search for temporary opportunities hidden in a loud hectic world. In her work Ja to znaczy kto? Rzecz o osobowej tożsamości i wychowaniu (Who am I? On personal identity and education) Małgorzata Malicka defines four identity criteria. The author of this article makes an attempt not only to connect these criteria with cultural research, but also to link them with all crucial traces of female identity. Woman’s writing seems to be quite an exceptional area in this matter, offering us the rare possibility to recognise culture as a critical source of knowledge

Mamy bowiem do czynienia z nieustannym poszukiwaniem tymczasowych możliwości, ukrytych w gwarnym i nieuporządkowanym świecie. Małgorzata Malicka w pracy Ja to znaczy kto? Rzecz o osobowej tożsamości i wychowaniu definiuje cztery wyznaczniki tożsamości.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - diagnostic challenge in a general practice

    Get PDF
Introduction: Chronic fatigue syndrome is a heterogeneous disease associated with a vary of symptoms but with severe, prolonged fatigue as the core symptom associated with the disease. This is a condition characterized by an unreasonable sense of tiredness lasting over 6 months that cannot be explained by other conditions. In spite of more and more intensive research, the chronic fatigue syndrome is still insufficiently known and often overlooked in diagnostics. Aim: The intention of this article is to obtain and summarize current information about the diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome and also to increase the awareness of the problem in general medical practice. Materials and methods: The systematic literature search was performed by the use of Pubmed as a database. An extensive literature study has been carried out covering the period from 2007 until 2018. Results: This report presents a differential diagnosis of CFS and preliminary tests, that we should do to exclude other diseases associated with fatigue. The article describes presently used questionnaires in CFS – COMPASS and The Chalder Fatigue Scale. The issue of the role of infections in the ethiopathogenesis of CFS has also been raised. The attention was paid to EBV, because of the widespread of its carrier state. The article presents also the potential role of hipocortisolism and α-melanocorticotropin hormone as the hormonal markers of CFS. Conclusions: In conclusion, there is an essential need to discover possible markers of CFS and to create standardized diagnostic procedure for this underestimated disease. Analysis of recent studies allow us to create simple scheme which general practicers can use to diagnose CFS and rise quality of life of many patients which is heavily impaired by as common symptom as chronic fatigue is

    Diogenes’ syndrome

Diogenes’ syndrome is a severe, life-threatening neurobehavioral disorder. Its main symptoms are complete negligence of ones hygiene, domestic squalor, emotional and social detachment as well as pathological hoarding of unnecessary things (mostly rubbish). In most cases, it affects elderly and lonesome people. This article shows the history of said disease, starting from early mentions, then going through researches conducted by Duncan Macmillan and Patricia Shaw in 1966, up until later studies done by Clark and his colleagues - this team labeled said illness in 1975 as Diogenes’ syndrome. What is more, their work covered majority of the most frequent indications along with its questionable etiopathogenesis. In addition, this article contains criteria, presented by Shehryar Khan in The American Journal of Psychiatry Residents' Journal, that can help in diagnosing this affliction. The fact that there is still very little knowledge about the therapy nor the diagnosis of Diogenes’ syndrome makes it difficult to treat. This paper describes the newest reports concerning epidemiology and the effectiveness of pharmacological treatment. The aim of that article is to gather and summarize up-to-date knowledge about said disease. Our main concern is the current, very low acquaintance with Diogenes’ syndrome which brings the challenge to the current state of medicine, especially psychiatry

Have thyroid hormones an impact on ovarian cancer?

    Get PDF
Thyroid hormones show not only genomic, but also nongenomic activity, which is related to specific membrane, cytoplasmic and organelle receptors. The best known receptors are located on the alpha-V-beta-3 integrin of cell membrane. Their stimulation results in an activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) or phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), which directly leads to an inhibition of apoptosis and increased proliferation of tumor cells, as well as promotes angiogenesis and metastasis formation. In ovarian cancer cells L-thyroxine is proven to be involved in MAPK activation as well as in the up-regulation of expression and enhanced cellular accumulation of programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1), which results in an inhibition of neoplastic cells apoptosis

Will Tirzepatide become a game-changer in the pharmacological treatment of obesity? - literature review

    Get PDF
Introduction and objective: Obesity has become an important public health issue in Poland. Furthermore, it is one of the most common preventable causes of diseases and mortality. Pharmacological methods of treating obesity have been developing significantly in recent years.Tirzepatide is a new dual incretin receptor agonist that activates both GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptors. The aim of this review is to assess the effectiveness of this medication in reducing body weight. Current state of knowledge: According to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS) in Poland, 65% of men and 49% of women are struggling with the issue of excessive body weight [1]. Obesity in Polish society is steadily increasing in every age group. However, it affects most significantly children aged 7-13 years and adolescents. In 2022, the novel dual GLP and GIP-1 agonist has been registered for the treatment of type 2 diabetes which is not satisfactorily controlled. It can be also used together with diet and physical activity in patients diagnosed with obesity (BMI of 30 kg/m2 or more) or who are overweight (BMI 27-30 kg/m2) and have weight-related health problems such as hypertension, metabolic syndrome, dislipidaemia and diabetes mellitus [2]. Summary: The increasing prevalence of obesity leads to a dynamic search for the most effective pharmacological methods of treating obesity. The combined activation of GLP-1 and GIP receptors by Tirzepatide has been shown to have additional benefits beyond satisfying glucose control. The biological mechanism of action of this medication additionally causes decreased food intake, slowed gastric emptying and enhanced insulin secretion, all of which can contribute to weight reduction

We Do Not Like It: A Likert-Type Scale Survey on the Attitudes of a Young Population towards the Transhumanistic Theory of Education

    Get PDF
Transhumanists assume that future education may be purely based on technological stimulation. The question is: Do potential clients of education “like” such vision? In order to check this, we asked over one thousand two hundred young Poles to evaluate their identification with the transhumanistic theory of education. The results are quite surprising: its show that they disagree with the assumptions of this theory, while they rather agree with the postulates of more traditional (and no technology-based) concepts of education
