    The silicon pixel vertex detector is a key element of the BTeV spectrometer. Sensors bump-bonded to prototype front-end devices were tested in a high energy pion beam at Fermilab. The spatial resolution and occupancies as a function of the pion incident angle were measured for various sensor-readout combinations. The data are compared with predictions from our Monte Carlo simulation and very good agreement is found.Comment: 24 pages, 20 figure

    The silicon pixel vertex detector is one of the key elements of the BTeV spectrometer. Detector prototypes were tested in a beam at Fermilab. We report here on the measured spatial resolution as a function of the incident angles for different sensor-readout electronics combinations.     Phases of Thermal N=2 Quiver Gauge Theories

    We consider large N U(N)^M thermal N=2 quiver gauge theories on S^1 x S^3. We obtain a phase diagram of the theory with R-symmetry chemical potentials, separating a low-temperature/high-chemical potential region from a high-temperature/low-chemical potential region. In close analogy with the N=4 SYM case, the free energy is of order O(1) in the low-temperature region and of order O(N^2 M) in the high-temperature phase. We conclude that the N=2 theory undergoes a first order Hagedorn phase transition at the curve in the phase diagram separating these two regions. We observe that in the region of zero temperature and critical chemical potential the Hilbert space of gauge invariant operators truncates to smaller subsectors. We compute a l-loop effective potential with non-zero VEV's for the scalar fields in a sector where the VEV's are homogeneous and mutually commuting. At low temperatures the eigenvalues of these VEV's are distributed uniformly over an S^5/Z_M which we interpret as the emergence of the S^5/Z_M factor of the holographically dual geometry AdS_5 x S^5/Z_M. Above the Hagedorn transition the eigenvalue distribution of the Polyakov loop opens a gap, resulting in the collapse of the joint eigenvalue distribution from S^5/Z_M x S^1 into S^6/Z_M.Comment: 40 pages text + 15 pages appendix, 3 figures, latex; v2: one minor typo corrected and typeset in JHEP format; v3: computation of saddle points in Sec. 4.2 improved, discussion of stability of saddle points added in Sec. 6.2, minor changes, ref. adde

    Inhomogeneous multidimensional cosmological models with a higher dimensional space-time manifold are investigated under dimensional reduction. In the Einstein conformal frame, small excitations of the scale factors of the internal spaces near minima of an effective potential have a form of massive scalar fields in the external space-time.     Evidence for Unusual Dynamical Arrest Scenario in Short Ranged Colloidal Systems

    Extensive molecular dynamics simulation studies of particles interacting via a short ranged attractive square-well (SW) potential are reported. The calculated loci of constant diffusion coefficient DD in the temperature-packing fraction plane show a re-entrant behavior, i.e. an increase of diffusivity on cooling, confirming an important part of the high volume-fraction dynamical-arrest scenario earlier predicted by theory for particles with short ranged potentials. The more efficient localization mechanism induced by the short range bonding provides, on average, additional free volume as compared to the hard-sphere case and results in faster dynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    First Observation of Coherent π0\pi^0 Production in Neutrino Nucleus Interactions with Eν<E_{\nu}< 2 GeV

    The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab has amassed the largest sample to date of π0\pi^0s produced in neutral current (NC) neutrino-nucleus interactions at low energy. This paper reports a measurement of the momentum distribution of π0\pi^0s produced in mineral oil (CH2_2) and the first observation of coherent π0\pi^0 production below 2 GeV. In the forward direction, the yield of events observed above the expectation for resonant production is attributed primarily to coherent production off carbon, but may also include a small contribution from diffractive production on hydrogen. Integrated over the MiniBooNE neutrino flux, the sum of the NC coherent and diffractive modes is found to be (19.5 ±\pm1.1 (stat) ±\pm2.5 (sys))% of all exclusive NC π0\pi^0 production at MiniBooNE. These measurements are of immediate utility because they quantify an important background to MiniBooNE's search for νμ→νe\nu_{\mu} \to \nu_e oscillations.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Lett.

    Branching Fractions for D0 -> K+K- and D0 -> pi+pi-, and a Search for CP Violation in D0 Decays

    Using the large hadroproduced charm sample collected in experiment E791 at Fermilab, we have measured ratios of branching fractions for the two-body singly-Cabibbo-suppressed charged decays of the D0: (D0 -> KK)/(D0 -> Kpi) = 0.109 +- 0.003 +- 0.003, (D0 -> pipi)/(D0 -> Kpi) = 0.040 +- 0.002 +- 0.003, and (D0 -> KK)/(D0 -> pipi) = 2.75 +- 0.15 +- 0.16. We have looked for differences in the decay rates of D0 and D0bar to the CP eigenstates K+K- and pi+pi-, and have measured the CP asymmetry parameters A_CP(K+K-) = -0.010 +- 0.049 +- 0.012 and A_CP(pi+pi-) = -0.049 +- 0.078 +- 0.030, both consistent with zero.Comment: 10 Postscript pages, including 2 figures.     Asymmetries between the production of D+ and D- mesons from 500 GeV/c pi- nucleon interactions as a function of xF and pt**2

    We present asymmetries between the production of D+ and D- mesons in Fermilab experiment E791 as a function of xF and pt**2. The data used here consist of 74,000 fully-reconstructed charmed mesons produced by a 500 GeV/c pi- beam on C and Pt foils. The measurements are compared to results of models which predict differences between the production of heavy-quark mesons that have a light quark in common with the beam (leading particles) and those that do not (non-leading particles). While the default models do not agree with our data, we can reach agreement with one of them, PYTHIA, by making a limited number of changes to parameters used
