Theory of mind in utterance interpretation: the case from clinical pragmatics

    Get PDF
The cognitive basis of utterance interpretation is an area that continues to provoke intense theoretical debate among pragmatists. That utterance interpretation involves some type of mind-reading or theory of mind (ToM) is indisputable. However, theorists are divided on the exact nature of this ToM-based mechanism. In this paper, it is argued that the only type of ToM-based mechanism that can adequately represent the cognitive basis of utterance interpretation is one which reflects the rational, intentional, holistic character of interpretation. Such a ToM-based mechanism is supported on conceptual and empirical grounds. Empirical support for this view derives from the study of children and adults with pragmatic disorders. Specifically, three types of clinical case are considered. In the first case, evidence is advanced which indicates that individuals with pragmatic disorders exhibit deficits in reasoning and the use of inferences. These deficits compromise the ability of children and adults with pragmatic disorders to comply with the rational dimension of utterance interpretation

Downregulation of genes with a function in axon outgrowth and synapse formation in motor neurones of the VEGF(delta/delta) mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Background: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an endothelial cell mitogen that stimulates vasculogenesis. It has also been shown to act as a neurotrophic factor in vitro and in vivo. Deletion of the hypoxia response element of the promoter region of the gene encoding VEGF in mice causes a reduction in neural VEGF expression, and results in adult-onset motor neurone degeneration that resembles amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Investigating the molecular pathways to neurodegeneration in the VEGF(delta/delta) mouse model of ALS may improve understanding of the mechanisms of motor neurone death in the human disease. Results: Microarray analysis was used to determine the transcriptional profile of laser captured spinal motor neurones of transgenic and wild-type littermates at 3 time points of disease. 324 genes were significantly differentially expressed in motor neurones of presymptomatic VEGF(delta/delta) mice, 382 at disease onset, and 689 at late stage disease. Massive transcriptional downregulation occurred with disease progression, associated with downregulation of genes involved in RNA processing at late stage disease. VEGF(delta/delta) mice showed reduction in expression, from symptom onset, of the cholesterol synthesis pathway, and genes involved in nervous system development, including axonogenesis, synapse formation, growth factor signalling pathways, cell adhesion and microtubule-based processes. These changes may reflect a reduced capacity of VEGF(delta/delta) mice for maintenance and remodelling of neuronal processes in the face of demands of neural plasticity. The findings are supported by the demonstration that in primary motor neurone cultures from VEGF(delta/delta) mice, axon outgrowth is significantly reduced compared to wild-type littermates. Conclusions: Downregulation of these genes involved in axon outgrowth and synapse formation in adult mice suggests a hitherto unrecognized role of VEGF in the maintenance of neuronal circuitry. Dysregulation of VEGF may lead to neurodegeneration through synaptic regression and dying-back axonopathy

The role of law and ethics in developing business management as a profession

Currently, business management is far from being recognised as a profession. This paper suggests that a professional spirit should be developed which could function as a filter of commercial reasoning. Broadly, management will not be organised within the framework of a well-established profession unless formal knowledge, licensing, professional autonomy and professional codes of conduct are developed sufficiently. In developing business management as a profession, law may play a key role. Where the idea is that business management should be more professsionalised, managers must show that they are willing to adopt ethical values, while arriving at business decisions. The paper argues that ethics cannot survive without legal regulation, which, in turn, will not be supported by law unless lawyers can find alternative solutions to the large mechanisms of the official society, secured by the monopolised coercion of the nation state. From a micro perspective of law and business ethics, communities can be developed with their own conventions, rules and standards that are generated and sanctioned within the boundaries of the communities themselves

A Quantum-Proof Non-Malleable Extractor, With Application to Privacy Amplification against Active Quantum Adversaries

In privacy amplification, two mutually trusted parties aim to amplify the secrecy of an initial shared secret XX in order to establish a shared private key KK by exchanging messages over an insecure communication channel. If the channel is authenticated the task can be solved in a single round of communication using a strong randomness extractor; choosing a quantum-proof extractor allows one to establish security against quantum adversaries. In the case that the channel is not authenticated, Dodis and Wichs (STOC'09) showed that the problem can be solved in two rounds of communication using a non-malleable extractor, a stronger pseudo-random construction than a strong extractor. We give the first construction of a non-malleable extractor that is secure against quantum adversaries. The extractor is based on a construction by Li (FOCS'12), and is able to extract from source of min-entropy rates larger than 1/21/2. Combining this construction with a quantum-proof variant of the reduction of Dodis and Wichs, shown by Cohen and Vidick (unpublished), we obtain the first privacy amplification protocol secure against active quantum adversaries

    New zebrafish models of neurodegeneration

    Get PDF
In modern biomedicine, the increasing need to develop experimental models to further our understanding of disease conditions and delineate innovative treatments has found in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) an experimental model, and indeed a valuable asset, to close the gap between in vitro and in vivo assays. Translation of ideas at a faster pace is vital in the field of neurodegeneration, with the attempt to slow or prevent the dramatic impact on the society's welfare being an essential priority. Our research group has pioneered the use of zebrafish to contribute to the quest for faster and improved understanding and treatment of neurodegeneration in concert with, and inspired by, many others who have primed the study of the zebrafish to understand and search for a cure for disorders of the nervous system. Aware of the many advantages this vertebrate model holds, here, we present an update on the recent zebrafish models available to study neurodegeneration with the goal of stimulating further interest and increasing the number of diseases and applications for which they can be exploited. We shall do so by citing and commenting on recent breakthroughs made possible via zebrafish, highlighting their benefits for the testing of therapeutics and dissecting of disease mechanisms

Pedagogical Considerations and Terminological Conventions in Arabic Grammatical Tradition: The Term jumla Revisited

    Get PDF
It has been claimed in modern scholarship that the term jumla (“sentence”/”clause”) as used by early grammarians differed from its use by later ones, in that it excluded verbal clauses, or at least a subtype thereof. The present article argues that conclusions regarding grammatical theories should not be drawn from isolated texts; rather, other factors, such as pedagogical considerations, the history of terms and manners of speech which were conventional in grammatical writings, should also be taken into account. More specifically, it will be shown that although some texts display terminological inconsistencies regarding the use of jumla, they do not reflect an early theory

The factors contributing towards the success of startup businesses in Finland

    Get PDF
Finland is known worldwide for its robust startup environment, which is characterized by innovation, public funding, and institutional support. Despite the favorable atmosphere, many entrepreneurs confront early-stage obstacles. Understanding the elements that drive startup success is critical, particularly in the context of a Nordic economy where sustainability, digital transformation, and entrepreneurship are important national priorities. This thesis investigates the link between two essential elements—the power of the company idea and availability to funding— and their impact on startup success in Finland. The major goal of the study was to determine how the perceived quality of a business idea and the availability of capital influence the growth and sustainability of new companies. The study intended to answer one central question: How do the quality of a business idea and access to funding contribute to the success of startup businesses in Finland? Two sub-questions were also addressed: How important is a great business idea to Finnish startups? How does access to funding affect startup success in Finland? The research employed a quantitative technique, including a structured online survey delivered via Webropol. The target audience consisted of early-stage entrepreneurs, aspiring founders, and Finnish business students. A total of 60 responses were gathered and analyzed in Microsoft Excel with descriptive statistics. The theoretical framework is based on current literature on entrepreneurship, startup funding, business model creation, and ecosystem assistance, as well as examples from Finnish companies. According to the data, 86.6% of respondents rated a good business idea as "very important" or "extremely important" for startup success. At the same time, 80% identified funding as a significant success component. Most participants agreed that a verified company idea, when combined with enough financial support, leads to increased scalability and operational growth. Respondents also identified obstacles such as complex grant applications, language hurdles, and a lack of networks. These were especially common among overseas entrepreneurs. The findings reaffirmed the view that a company idea and funding are inextricably linked in the entrepreneurial journey. At last, the thesis highlights that startup success in Finland depends on both the uniqueness and validity of the company idea, as well as timely and enough financial backing. For budding entrepreneurs, the findings emphasize the value of market research, strategy clarity, and ecosystem participation. Recommendations include raising awareness of funding sources, developing mentorship networks, and lowering bureaucratic barriers. Future study might compare the startup paths of native and overseas founders, or it could look at the long-term success characteristics of firms after the initial launch period

Suspending Voluntary Reserve Service: New Questions in Israeli Military Ethics

    Get PDF
Military activities with the framework of the IDF [Israel Defense Force] is carried out by citizens in a variety of positions. In addition to the ordinary positions of career officers and NCOs, the IDF consists of conscripted men and women as well as reservists. Some of the latter serve under an ordinary command to serve for a certain relatively short period. Other reservists, including pilots and special forces officers have served since they volunteered to serve. Facing the political clash between the government, who have been viewed as trying to change the democratic nature of the state, and the popular opposition, who have tried to protect the judiciary and other elements of democracy, many officers who belong to the latter reservist group have suspended their voluntary service or even retired. Their decision has raised the obvious issue of whether such decisions can be justified, morally, ethically, and democratically. This is the topic of the present paper
