The bill would have required certain divorcing parents with dependent children under 18 years of age to participate in education classes and provided the different types of professionals who could conduct the classes. The bill also would have enacted a waiting period changing the time a court could grant a divorce to 120 days from the date of the parties\u27 separation when the parties have children 18 years of age or younger. The bill provided a waiting period waiver when a party obtained a protective order or when either party submitted allegations to the court of specific facts establishing probable cause that family violence had occurred. The parties also could obtain a waiver of the waiting period if they presented a settlement agreement to the court indicating they utilized principles of collaborative practice

Y\u27all Think We\u27re Stupid: Deconstructing Media Stereotypes of The American South

    Get PDF
This study examines the various stereotypes that persist about the American South, giving consideration to the common stereotypes, their persistence, and the response of Southerners and non-Southerners to them. Further, it aims to examine in-depth the methods by which these stereotypes are perpetuated, such as literature, movies, television, and music. Within this dissertation, pieces of literature by traditional Southern authors, like William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams, are examined for the images they employ. Further, films such as Deliverance and Sweet Home Alabama, as well as television shows like The Dukes of Hazzard and The Beverly Hillbillies are analyzed for how they convey stereotypes about the South. Lastly, music of all genres, though primarily country, is considered for the images it conveys. The major aim of this study is not only to reveal these stereotypes but also to deconstruct them

Epigenetic marks as the link between environment and development: examination of the associations between attachment, socioeconomic status, and methylation of the SLC6A4 gene.

BackgroundEpigenetic processes act as a link between environment and individual development. This pilot study examined the association between socioeconomic status (SES), attachment, and methylation of the promoter region of the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4).MethodsAttachment classification and SLC6A4 methylation was determined in 100 late adolescents. We hypothesized that (1) SES would interact with methylation to predict higher unresolved loss (UL) or trauma scores on the Adult Attachment Interview; (2) across SES, participants with unresolved attachment would have lower levels of methylation than organized or secure participants; and (3) within the unresolved classification, SES would predict methylation.ResultsResults showed that lower methylation and low-SES were associated with higher UL, and higher methylation and low-SES were associated with higher unresolved trauma. Across SES, unresolved participants had lower levels of methylation than organized participants. Within the unresolved category, low-SES unresolved participants had higher levels of methylation than mid/upper-SES participants. SES was unrelated to methylation within the secure and organized categories.ConclusionsThese results suggest that the quality of attachment relationships may impact epigenetic processes

The role of networked learning in academics’ writing

    Get PDF
This article explores academics’ writing practices, focusing on the ways in which they use digital platforms in their processes of collaborative learning. It draws on interview data from a research project that has involved working closely with academics across different disciplines and institutions to explore their writing practices, understanding academic literacies as situated social practices. The article outlines the characteristics of academics’ ongoing professional learning, demonstrating the importance of collaborations on specific projects in generating learning in relation to using digital platforms and for sharing and collaborating on scholarly writing. A very wide range of digital platforms have been identified by these academics, enabling new kinds of collaboration across time and space on writing and research; but challenges around online learning are also identified, particularly the dangers of engaging in learning in public, the pressures of ‘always-on’-ness and the different values systems around publishing in different forums

KINETICS OF THE LOWER EXTEREMITIES IN ERGOMETER ROWING DEPEND ON BODY MASS INDEX

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of body mass index (BMI) on the kinetics of the lower extremities in ergometer rowing. Our results indicate that BMI has a major impact on lower extremity kinetics in ergometer rowing. Significantly increased knee joint torques with respect to external adduction and internal rotation were found. Furthermore, differences in hip and knee extension torques were found. The results indicate that obese individuals are at higher risk of overloading the knee joint during ergometer rowing

An Examination of the Occupational Impact on Family Life having a Child in Competitive Sports

    Get PDF
The purpose of this capstone research project was to examine the impact of having a child in competitive sports has on the performance patterns of a family. As youth sports culture intensifies in America, it is important to provide an occupational therapy perspective on this aspect of life. A mixed methods research study was conducted with twenty-seven parents of children in competitive team sports. Survey and semi-structured interviews provided insight into the lived experiences of families with a child in competitive sports.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstones-spring2022/1030/thumbnail.jp

THE IMPACT OF BODY MASS AND SKILL LEVEL ON ROWING KINEMATICS

    Get PDF
Rowing is a non-weight-bearing aerobic full body exercise, which is often recommended for weight loss programs. Previous studies demonstrated that Body Mass Index (BMI) is correlated with changes in the kinematics of humans. We extend this area of research to compare the effect of both BMI and skill-level on the kinematics of the lower extremities during rowing. Findings highlight differences such as knee flexion, knee internal rotation, hip extension, hip external rotation between normal weight and obese individuals. These findings suggest that injury risks are correlated to body type and previous skill level. This research indicates the need for adjustable setups for the rowing ergometer. This recommendation would not only increase comfort for all types of athletes, but reduce risks of injury and create the necessary conditions to accomplish a proper technique

Recruiting Effective Math Teachers: How Do Math Immersion Teachers Compare?: Evidence from New York City

    Get PDF
School districts often struggle to recruit and retain effective math teachers. Alternative-route certification programs aim to expand the pool of teachers available; however, many alternate routes have not been able to attract large numbers of teacher candidates with undergraduate degrees in math. In response, some districts, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and New York City, have developed alternative programs with a math immersion component to recruit candidates who do not have undergraduate majors in math. Such programs provide potential math teachers with intensive math preparation to meet state certification requirements while, at the same time maintaining an early-entry approach in which individuals who have not completed a teacher preparation program can become qualified to teach with only five to seven weeks of coursework and practice teaching. Four years since its inception, the New York City Teacher Fellows Math Immersion program supplies 50 percent of all new certified math teachers to New York City public schools. In this study, we find that Math Immersion teachers have stronger academic qualifications than their College Recommending (traditionally certified) peers, although they have weaker qualifications than Teach for America teachers. However, despite stronger general academic qualifications Math Immersion teachers produce somewhat smaller gains in math achievement for middle school math students than do College Recommending teachers and substantially smaller gains than do Teach for America teachers.
