    The Face of Fakes: U.S. Consumers and Counterfeit Fashion Products

    Counterfeit products pose a serious threat to fashion product brand owners and to the world economy. While research on the demand side of counterfeiting has grown over the past two decades, few extant studies have been conducted among non-student consumers outside Asia and Europe and few studies have focused on product categories other than consumer electronic-related items. Using a sample of U.S. consumers (N=305), the current research investigates consumer attitudes in the context of fashion products. Findings suggest that gender and education are the two variables most frequently related to purchase intention for counterfeits, beliefs about counterfeit products, and ethicality. In addition, age appears to affect consumer stance on the social cost of counterfeiting, and education is related to anti-big business attitudes. In contrast, income does not appear to be related to any of the focal variables examined in the study

    An Arts-Based Educational Exhibit on Menopausal Hot Flashes

    Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the development process, science, and symbolism of an arts-based educational exhibit designed to address myths, misinformation, negative imagery, and use of unproven treatments related to menopausal hot flashes. Methods: The development process included iterative and informal feedback from a variety of individuals, a partnership with an experienced exhibit designer, and collaborations between artists and scientists. Results: The resulting exhibit creates an environment where the public is immersed in accurate information about hot flashes. Although based on an iterative process, the resulting exhibit content reflects an estimated 500+ scientific studies, including those referenced in The North American Menopause Society position statements on hormone and nonhormone management of hot flashes. The seven main exhibit pieces convey scientific information and symbolize various aspects of women's experiences. Conclusions: This innovative exhibit has high potential to be a disruptive innovation to address the preponderance of myths, misinformation, and negative imagery surrounding menopausal hot flashes and potentially decrease the use of unproven therapies

    The roles of estradiol-17 beta and prolactin in uterine gland development in the neonatal ewe

    Endometrial glands are required for adult uterine function and develop post-natally in mammalian species. Therefore, studies were conducted using neonatal ewes as a model to determine: 1) the roles of estradiol-17-alpha and estrogen receptor-alpha (ER-beta) in endometrial gland development; 2) the role of ovaries in endometrial gland development; 3) the role of prolactin in endometrial gland development; and 4) factors regulating prolactin receptor expression in endometrial glands. Study one determined the effects of neonatal exposure of ewes to estradiol-17-alpha valerate (EV); EM-800, an ER-beta antagonist; or CGS-20267, an aromatase inhibitor on endometrial gland development. Results indicate E2-17-alpha does not regulate endometrial gland differentiation or development. Additionally, ER-beta does not regulate primary differentiation of glandular epithelium, but does influence coiling and branching morphogenesis of endometrial glands. Study two determined the effects of ovariectomy on endometrial gland morphogenesis. Results suggest that the ovary and, thus, an ovarian-derived factor(s) regulate, in part, the coiling and branching of endometrial glands. Expression of subunits of activin, follistatin, and inhibin in the neonatal ovine ovary in addition to modulation of the components of the activin/follistatin system in the uterus of ovariectomized ewes supports the hypothesis that the ovarian factors that influence endometrial adenogenesis in the neonatal ewe may be activin, follistatin, and/or inhibin. Studies three and four determined the role of prolactin in endometrial adenogenesis in the neonatal ewe. Studies in which either hypoprolactinemia or hyperprolactinemia were induced indicate that prolactin regulates ovine endometrial adenogenesis in the neonatal ewe. The aim of study five was to determine transcription factors that regulate the glandular epithelium specific expression of prolactin receptor. Prolactin receptor exon 2 was cloned and sequenced, but no identifiable exon 1 or promoter was found. Additionally, many bovine contigs containing portions of the prolactin receptor gene were identified suggesting the bovine genome will be a useful tool as it becomes more complete. These results indicate ER-beta, prolactin and prolactin receptor, along with an unidentified ovarian factor(s), influence endometrial gland development in the neonatal ewe; however, exposure of the neonatal ewe to exogenous estradiol-17-alpha prevents differentiation and development of endometrial glands

    Exploring Obesity Risk Factors in Five Regions of Virginia

    Obesity continues to weaken our nation physiologically, psychologically and financially with an overall prevalence rate of 34.9% or 78.6 million Americans affected. Variance in obesity prevalence rates, in the state of Virginia, account for over a 15% difference from one health district to the next. The purpose of this research was to better explore the regional obesogenic factors that may exist among five health districts in the state of Virginia. The socio ecological theory provides the conceptual framework of the study to understand the variance in regional obesity rates, as a function of the contributing risk factors that a region exhibits. This study was a quantitative retrospective secondary analysis that investigated four obesogenic risk factors using the Center for Disease Control\u27s 2013 Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance Survey. Binary logistic regression analyses were conducted for each of the four obesity factors in five regions in Virginia and the results emphasized that specific regional obesity prevention efforts in targeted areas are identifiable and specifically, attention to ethnicity, poverty, and exercise intensity are warranted in all Virginia\u27s health districts. Understanding obesogenic factors can further empower public policy makers to identify obesity prevention and treatment strategies most aligned with the health district needs such as exercise or nutrition campaigns targeting ethnic communities. Creating a statewide profile of regional obesogenic factors using this research model can bring about effective community intervention strategies leading to impactful improvements in individual health, wellness, and quality of life which can be a force in the community\u27s positive social change

    Characterization of cell proliferation throughout the brain of the African cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni and its regulation by social status

    New cells are added in the brains of all adult vertebrates, but fishes have some of the greatest potential for neurogenesis and gliogenesis among all taxa, partly due to their indeterminate growth. Little is known, however, about how social interactions influence cell proliferation in the brain of these fishes that comprise the largest group of vertebrates. We used 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU) to identify and localize proliferation zones in the telencephalon, diencephalon, mesencephalon, and rhombencephalon that were primarily associated with ventricular surfaces in the brain of the African cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni. Cell migration was evident in some regions by 1 day post injection, and many newborn cells coexpressed the neuronal marker HuC/D at 30 days, suggesting they had differentiated into neurons. To test the hypothesis that social status and perception of an opportunity to rise in rank influenced cell proliferation, we compared numbers of BrdU-labeled cells in multiple brain nuclei among fish of different social status. Socially suppressed subordinate males had the lowest numbers of proliferating cells in all brain regions examined, but males that were given an opportunity to rise in status had higher cell proliferation rates within 1 day, suggesting rapid upregulation of brain mitotic activity associated with this social transition. Furthermore, socially isolated dominant males had similar numbers of BrdU-labeled cells compared with dominant males that were housed in a socially rich environment, suggesting that isolation has little effect on proliferation and that reduced proliferation in subordinates is a result of the social subordination. These results suggest that A. burtoni will be a useful model to analyze the mechanisms of socially induced neurogenesis in vertebrates. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc
