    Multi-Keyword Multi-Click Option Contracts for Sponsored Search Advertising

    In sponsored search, advertising slots are usually sold by a search engine to an advertiser through an auction mechanism in which advertisers bid on keywords. In theory, an auction mechanism encourages the advertisers to truthfully bid for keywords. However, keyword auctions have a number of problems including: (i) volatility in revenue, (ii) uncertainty in the bidding and charged prices for advertisers’ keywords, and (iii) weak brand loyalty between the advertiser and the search engine. To address these issues, we study the possibility of creating a special option contract that alleviates these problems. In our proposal, an advertiser purchases an option in advance from a search engine by paying an upfront fee, known as the option price. The advertiser then has the right, but no obligation, to then purchase specific keywords for a fixed costper-click (CPC) for a specified number of clicks in a specified period of time. Hence, the advertiser has increased certainty in sponsored search while the search engine could raise the customers’ loyalty. The proposed option contract can be used in conjunction with traditional keyword auctions. As such, the option price and corresponding fixed CPC price must be set such that there is no arbitrage opportunity. In this paper, we discuss an option pricing model tailored to sponsored search that deals with spot CPCs of targeted keywords in a generalized second price (GSP) auction. We show that the pricing model for keywords is closely related to a special exotic option in finance that contains multiple underlying assets (multi-keywords) and is also multi-exercisable (multi-clicks). Experimental results on real advertising data verify our pricing model and demonstrate that advertising options can benefit both advertisers and search engines

    ICMR 2014: 4th ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval

    ICMR was initially started as a workshop on challenges in image retrieval (in Newcastle in 1998 ) and later transformed into the Conference on Image and Video Retrieval (CIVR) series. In 2011 the CIVR and the ACM Workshop on Multimedia Information Retrieval were combined into a single conference that now forms the ICMR series. The 4th ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval took place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 1 – 4 April 2014. This was the largest edition of ICMR to date with approximately 170 attendees from 25 different countries. ICMR is one of the premier scientific conference for multimedia retrieval held worldwide, with the stated mission “to illuminate the state of the art in multimedia retrieval by bringing together researchers and practitioners in the field of multimedia retrieval .” According to the Chinese Computing Federation Conference Ranking (2013), ACM ICMR is the number one multimedia retrieval conference worldwide and the number four conference in the category of multimedia and graphics. Although ICMR is about multimedia retrieval, in a wider sense, it is also about automated multimedia understanding. Much of the work in that area involves the analysis of media on a pixel, voxel, and wavelet level, but it also involves innovative retrieval, visualisation and interaction paradigms utilising the nature of the multimedia — be it video, images, speech, or more abstract (sensor) data. The conference aims to promote intellectual exchanges and interactions among scientists, engineers, students, and multimedia researchers in academia as well as industry through various events, including a keynote talk, oral, special and poster sessions focused on re search challenges and solutions, technical and industrial demonstrations of prototypes, tutorials, research, and an industrial panel.     Geometric computing and uniform grid technique

    If computational geometry should play an important role in the professional environment (e.g. graphics and robotics), the data structures it advocates should be readily implemented and the algorithms efficient. In the paper, the uniform grid and a diverse set of geometric algorithms that are all based on it, are reviewed. The technique, invented by the second author, is a flat, and thus non-hierarchical, grid whose resolution adapts to the data. It is especially suitable for telling efficiently which pairs of a large number of short edges intersect. Several of the algorithms presented here exist as working programs (among which is a visible surface program for polyhedra) and can handle large data sets (i.e. many thousands of geometric objects). Furthermore, the uniform grid is appropriate for parallel processing; the parallel implementation presented gives very good speed-up results. © 1989

    Given we live in an era with accelerating digitization and rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI), AI may eventually automate more job tasks. However, researchers have scarcely if at all critically analyzed how AI will automate such tasks and what professions it will automate more than others. Some studies suggest that AI cannot conduct highly creative and knowledge-intensive tasks. Yet, AI algorithms have generated creative art pieces that even art critics could not distinguish from human-drawn paintings. As IS (and most other) researchers, we pride ourselves on our work’s scarcity, novelty, and creativity.
