    New group of stable icosahedral quasicrystals: structural properties and formation conditions

    Structural studies on the icosahedral quasicrystals in Zn-Mg-Sc, Cu-Ga-Mg-Sc, and Zn-Mg-Ti alloys as well as their corresponding 1/1 cubic approximants, have revealed that these quasicrystals belong to a new structural group similar to Cd-based quasicrystals. This group is characterized by a triple-shell icosahedral cluster different from both Mackay- and Bergman-types. The presence of the atomic cluster has been deduced from the structure model of the approximant crystal, Zn17Sc3, in which the clusters are embedded in a periodic network of so-called "glue atoms". Density measurement suggested the presence of at least 2.7 Zn atoms in the first shell of the cluster in this approximant. The substitutional relationship in these three quasicrystals indicates the important role of Hume-Rothery rule for the formation of this type of quasicrystal. The occurrence of a P-type icosahedral quasicrystal in Zn-Mg-Yb alloy is also reported.Comment: 11 pages, 1 table, 6 figure

    Characterization of electrochemiluminescence of tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) with glyphosate as coreactant in aqueous solution

    Glyphosate, a phosphorus-containing amino acid type herbicide was used as a coreactant for studying of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) reaction of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) [Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)] in an aqueous solution. In a phosphate buffer solution of pH 8, glyphosate itself was known to be electrochemically inactive at glassy carbon electrode, however, it participated in a homogeneous chemical reaction with the electrogenerated Ru(bpy)(3)(3+), and resulted in producing Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) species at the electrode surface. Kinetic and mechanistic information for the catalysis of glyphosate oxidation were evaluated by the steady-state voltammetric measurement with an ultramicroelectrode. The simulated cyclic voltammogram based on this mechanism was in good agreement with that obtained experimentally. ECL reaction of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)/glyphosate system was found to be strongly dependent on the media pH. In a pH region of 5-9, an ECL wave appeared at ca. +1.1 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which was caused by the generation of *Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) via a Ru(bpy)(3)(3+)-mediated oxidation of glyphosate. When pH >10, a second ECL wave was observed at ca. +1.35 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which was believed to be associated with a reaction between Ru(bpy)(3)(3+) and the species from direct oxidation of GLYP at a GC electrode surface.ArticleElectrochimica Acta 55(20):5532-5537 (2010)journal articl

    Electronically modified single wall carbon nanohorns with iodine adsorption

    Tailoring electronic properties of single wall carbon nanohorn (SWCNH) is expected to develop the application potential in various fields. SWCNH is efficiently modified with iodine molecules by liquid phase adsorption. The adsorption isotherm of iodine on SWCNH was Langmuirian with the saturated adsorption amount of 185 +/- 10 mg g (1) (coverage 0.18), indicating a specific interaction between SWCNH and iodine.     Non-porous reference carbon for N2 (77.4 K) and Ar (87.3 K) adsorption

    A new non-porous carbon material from granular olive stones has been prepared to be used as a reference material for the characterization of the pore structure of activated carbons.     <ORIGINAL ARTICLE>Histologic investigation of tissue surrounding bone in a HA-coated implant supported super structure with and without stress-absorbing elements

    The effectiveness of the implant-supported overdentures has been attracted attention for edentulous patients, and a number of studies have been reported. Implant-supported overdentures refer to implant-retained tissue-borne overdentures and it is different from the implant-supported fixed partial dentures recommended by Branemark. In implant-supported overdentures, the functional load may concentrate on implant where there is rigid connection. Loaded implants may cause a resorption of surrounding bone, leading to malfunction, loosing, and the ultimate failure of the implant. The present study reports a stress-absorbing element using a resilient compound designed as the super structure of a two-piece titanium core with hydroxyapatite coated cylinder implants, to avoid stress concentrations, and a histological comparison of the surrounding bone tissue with rigid elements. The tunneling spectra in the superconducting state (T ≪ Tc) display spectral features such as well-defined superconducting gap peak at ±Δ as well as dip-hump structures beyond the peaks. In some cases, the spectra with two-gaps have been observed, indicating the coexistence of two inequivalent superconducting layers.     Remodeling of Monoplanar Purkinje Cell Dendrites during Cerebellar Circuit Formation

    Dendrite arborization patterns are critical determinants of neuronal connectivity and integration. Planar and highly branched dendrites of the cerebellar Purkinje cell receive specific topographical projections from two major afferent pathways; a single climbing fiber axon from the inferior olive that extend along Purkinje dendrites, and parallel fiber axons of granule cells that contact vertically to the plane of dendrites. It has been believed that murine Purkinje cell dendrites extend in a single parasagittal plane in the molecular layer after the cell polarity is determined during the early postnatal development. By three-dimensional confocal analysis of growing Purkinje cells, we observed that mouse Purkinje cells underwent dynamic dendritic remodeling during circuit maturation in the third postnatal week. After dendrites were polarized and flattened in the early second postnatal week, dendritic arbors gradually expanded in multiple sagittal planes in the molecular layer by intensive growth and branching by the third postnatal week. Dendrites then became confined to a single plane in the fourth postnatal week. Multiplanar Purkinje cells in the third week were often associated by ectopic climbing fibers innervating nearby Purkinje cells in distinct sagittal planes. The mature monoplanar arborization was disrupted in mutant mice with abnormal Purkinje cell connectivity and motor discoordination. The dendrite remodeling was also impaired by pharmacological disruption of normal afferent activity during the second or third postnatal week. Our results suggest that the monoplanar arborization of Purkinje cells is coupled with functional development of the cerebellar circuitry
