Energy Dependence of the Delta Resonance: Chiral Dynamics in Action
There is an important connection between the low energy theorems of QCD and
the energy dependence of the Delta resonance in pi-N scattering, as well as the
closely related gamma^{*} N -> pi N reaction. The resonance shape is due not
only to the strong pi-N interaction in the p wave but the small interaction in
the s wave; the latter is due to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD
(i.e. the Nambu-Goldstone nature of the pion). A brief overview of experimental
tests of chiral perturbation theory and chiral based models is presentedComment: 11 pages, 6 figures, Festschrift for S.N. yan
Temperature dependent fluorescence in disordered Frenkel chains: interplay of equilibration and local band-edge level structure
We model the optical dynamics in linear Frenkel exciton systems governed by
scattering on static disorder and lattice vibrations, and calculate the
temperature dependent fluorescence spectrum and lifetime. The fluorescence
Stokes shift shows a nonmonotonic behavior with temperature, which derives from
the interplay of the local band-edge level structure and thermal equilibration.
The model yields excellent fits to experiments performed on linear dye
aggregates.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Measurement of the LT-asymmetry in \pi^0 electroproduction at the energy of the \Delta (1232) resonance
The reaction p(e,e'p)pi^0 has been studied at Q^2=0.2 (GeV/c)^2 in the region
of W=1232 MeV. From measurements left and right of q, cross section asymmetries
\rho_LT have been obtained in forward kinematics \rho_LT(\theta_\pi^0=20deg) =
(-11.68 +/- 2.36_stat +/- 2.36_sys)$ and backward kinematics
\rho_LT(\theta_\pi^0=160deg) =(12.18 +/- 0.27_stat +/- 0.82_sys). Multipole
ratios \Re(S_1+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 and \Re(S_0+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 were determined
in the framework of the MAID2003 model. The results are in agreement with older
data. The unusally strong negative \Re(S_0+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 required to bring
also the result of Kalleicher et al. in accordance with the rest of the data is
almost excluded.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables. Changed content. Accepted for

Processing of vanadium and niobium electrodeposited from alkali chloride melts
The methods of hydrometallurgical treatment of cathodic deposits obtained by electrorefining vanadium and niobium metals in chloride melts were studied. The effectiveness of employing nitric acid was demonstrated. The optimal conditions of leaching trapped salt were determined: HNO3 concentration of 2.5 wt. % for vanadium and 5 wt. % for niobium; solid-to-liquid ratio 1:10 for both metals. The effect of increasing duration of a washing cycle on number of process stages was investigated. The methods of final washing and drying metallic powders were considered. ©The Electrochemical Society.Physical and Analytical Electrochemistry;Electrodeposition;Energy Technolog
Quasi-free Photoproduction from the Bound Nucleon
Differential cross-sections for quasi-free photoproduction from the
proton and neutron bound in the deuteron have been measured for MeV at usind the Glasgow photon
tagger at MAMI, the Mainz 48 cm 64 cm NaI(Tl) photon
detector and the G\"ottingen SENECA recoil detector. For the proton
measurements made with both liquid deuterium and liquid hydrogen targets allow
direct comparison of "free" photoproduction cross-sections as extracted
from the bound proton data with experimental free cross sections which are
found to be in reasonable agreement below 320 MeV. At higher energies the
"free" cross sections extracted from quasifree data are significantly smaller
than the experimental free cross sections and theoretical predictions based on
multipole analysis. For the first time, "free" neutron cross sections have been
extracted in the -region. They are also in agreement with the
predictions from multipole analysis up to 320 MeV and significantly smaller at
higher photon energies
Luminescence in anion-deficient hafnia nanotubes
Hafnia-based nanostructures and other high-k dielectrics are promising
wide-gap materials for developing new opto- and nanoelectronics devices. They
possess a unique combination of physical and chemical properties such as
insensitivity to electrical and optical degradation, radiation damage
stability, a high specific surface area, and an increased concentration of the
appropriate active electron-hole centers. The present paper aims to investigate
the structural, optical, and luminescent properties of anodized
non-stoichiometric nanotubes. As-grown amorphous hafnia nanotubes and
nanotubes annealed at 700{\deg}C with a monoclinic crystal lattice served as
samples. It has been shown that the bandgap for direct allowed
transitions amounts to eV for amorphous and eV for
monoclinic nanotubes. For the first time, we have studied the features of the
intrinsic cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence of the obtained nanotubular
structures with an atomic deficiency in the anion sublattice at
temperatures of 10 and 300 K. A broad emission band with a maximum of 2.3-2.4
eV has been revealed. We have also conducted an analysis of the kinetic
dependencies of the observed photoluminescence for synthesized samples
in the millisecond range at room temperature. It showed that there are several
types of optically active capture and emission centers based on vacancy states
in the and positions with different coordination numbers and
a varied number of localized charge carriers (, , and ). The
uncovered regularities can be used to optimize the functional characteristics
of developed-surface luminescent media based on nanotubular and nanoporous
modifications of hafnia.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, 50 reference
Considerations on rescattering effects for threshold photo- and electro-production of on deuteron
We show that for the S-state -production in processes and the rescattering effects due to the
transition: (or are cancelled
out due to the Pauli principle. The large values for these effects predicted in
the past may result from the fact that the spin structure of the corresponding
matrix element and the necessary antisymmetrization induced by the presence of
identical protons (or neutrons) in the intermediate state was not taken into
account accurately. One of the important consequences of these considerations
is that photo- and electro-production on deuteron near threshold can
bring direct information about elementary neutron amplitudes.Comment: Add a new sectio
Lowest Q^2 Measurement of the gamma*p -> Delta Reaction: Probing the Pionic Contribution
To determine nonspherical angular momentum amplitudes in hadrons at long
ranges (low Q^2), data were taken for the p(\vec{e},e'p)\pi^0 reaction in the
Delta region at Q^2=0.060 (GeV/c)^2 utilizing the magnetic spectrometers of the
A1 Collaboration at MAMI. The results for the dominant transition magnetic
dipole amplitude and the quadrupole to dipole ratios at W=1232 MeV are:
M_{1+}^{3/2} = (40.33 +/- 0.63_{stat+syst} +/- 0.61_{model})
(10^{-3}/m_{\pi^+}),Re(E_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+}^{3/2}) = (-2.28 +/- 0.29_{stat+syst}
+/- 0.20_{model})%, and Re(S_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+}^{3/2}) = (-4.81 +/-
0.27_{stat+syst} +/- 0.26_{model})%. These disagree with predictions of
constituent quark models but are in reasonable agreement with lattice
calculations with non-linear (chiral) pion mass extrapolations, with chiral
effective field theory, and with dynamical models with pion cloud effects.
These results confirm the dominance, and general Q^2 variation, of the pionic
contribution at large distances.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
Higher moments of nucleon spin structure functions in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and in a resonance model
The third moment of the twist-3 part of the nucleon spin structure
function is generalized to arbitrary momentum transfer and is
evaluated in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT) up to order
and in a unitary isobar model (MAID). We show how to link
as well as higher moments of the nucleon spin structure functions
and to nucleon spin polarizabilities. We compare our results with the
most recent experimental data, and find a good description of these available
data within the unitary isobar model. We proceed to extract the twist-4 matrix
element which appears in the suppressed term in the twist
expansion of the spin structure function for proton and neutron.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figure
Precise Measurement of Sigma Beam Asymmetry for Positive Pion Photoproduction on the Proton from 800 to 1500 Mev
The Sigma beam asymmetry for positive pion photoproduction on the proton has
been measured over an angular range of 40-170 deg at photon energies from 0.8
to 1.5 GeV. The resulting data set includes 237 accurate points, 136 of these
belonging to an almost unexplored domain above 1.05 GeV. Data of such high
precision provide severe constraints for partial wave analyses. The influence
of this experiment on the GW multipole analysis is demonstrated. Significant
changes are found in multipoles connected to the S31(1620) and P13(1720)
resonances. Comparisons using the MAID analysis are also presented.Comment: 11 pages, 4 eps figures. to be published in Physics Letters
