    Bottom trawl fishery discards in the Black Sea coast of Turkey

    The purpose of this study is to determine the amount of bycatch and discardfish caught by bottom trawlers used in the Black Sea coasts of Turkey anddiscard changes depending on the depth. The study was conducted during theSeptember 2009 – April 2010 fishing season. Twenty-one bottom trawleroperations were sampled and the catch composition was determined. A total of 26species were caught, which included 22 species of fish, 2 species of arthropods,1 species of gastropods and 1 species of bivalves. Two of these were targetspecies (Mullusbarbatus, Merlangius merlangus), while 25 species werediscarded including trash fish and specimens below the legal size. A total of2142.76 kg of biomass was caught during the operations, of which 53.99 % bycatch.The weighted discard rate was determined as 42.06% and two different groupswere identified in discards (T1: 10-57 m, T2: 72-118 m) based on the depth.     Applications of Temperley-Lieb algebras to Lorentz lattice gases

    Motived by the study of motion in a random environment we introduce and investigate a variant of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. This algebra is very rich, providing us three classes of solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. This allows us to establish a theoretical framework to study the diffusive behaviour of a Lorentz Lattice gas.     Gravitational Instantons from Minimal Surfaces

    Physical properties of gravitational instantons which are derivable from minimal surfaces in 3-dimensional Euclidean space are examined using the Newman-Penrose formalism for Euclidean signature. The gravitational instanton that corresponds to the helicoid minimal surface is investigated in detail. This is a metric of Bianchi Type VII0VII_0, or E(2) which admits a hidden symmetry due to the existence of a quadratic Killing tensor. It leads to a complete separation of variables in the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for geodesics, as well as in Laplace's equation for a massless scalar field. The scalar Green function can be obtained in closed form which enables us to calculate the vacuum fluctuations of a massless scalar field in the background of this instanton.Comment: One figure available by fax upon request.     Effect of Coenzyme Q10 on ischemia and neuronal damage in an experimental traumatic brain-injury model in rats

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Head trauma is one of the most important clinical issues that not only can be fatal and disabling, requiring long-term treatment and care, but also can cause heavy financial burden. Formation or distribution of free oxygen radicals should be decreased to enable fixing of poor neurological outcomes and to prevent neuronal damage secondary to ischemia after trauma. Coenzyme Q<sub>10 </sub>(CoQ<sub>10</sub>), a component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, is a strong antioxidant that plays a role in membrane stabilization. In this study, the role of CoQ<sub>10 </sub>in the treatment of head trauma is researched by analyzing the histopathological and biochemical effects of CoQ<sub>10 </sub>administered after experimental traumatic brain injury in rats. A traumatic brain-injury model was created in all rats. Trauma was inflicted on rats by the free fall of an object of 450 g weight from a height of 70 cm on the frontoparietal midline onto a metal disc fixed between the coronal and the lambdoid sutures after a midline incision was carried out.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the biochemical tests, tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were significantly higher in the traumatic brain-injury group compared to the sham group (<it>p </it>< 0.05). Administration of CoQ<sub>10 </sub>after trauma was shown to be protective because it significantly lowered the increased MDA levels (<it>p </it>< 0.05). Comparing the superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels of the four groups, trauma + CoQ<sub>10 </sub>group had SOD levels ranging between those of sham group and traumatic brain-injury group, and no statistically significant increase was detected. Histopathological results showed a statistically significant difference between the CoQ<sub>10 </sub>and the other trauma-subjected groups with reference to vascular congestion, neuronal loss, nuclear pyknosis, nuclear hyperchromasia, cytoplasmic eosinophilia, and axonal edema (<it>p </it>< 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Neuronal degenerative findings and the secondary brain damage and ischemia caused by oxidative stress are decreased by CoQ<sub>10 </sub>use in rats with traumatic brain injury.</p

    Plasma irisin is elevated in type 2 diabetes and is associated with increased E-selectin levels

    BACKGROUND: Irisin is a hormone released mainly from skeletal muscle after exercise which increases adipose tissue energy expenditure. Adipocytes can also release irisin after exercise, acting as a local adipokine to induce white adipose tissue to take on a brown adipose tissue-like phenotype, suggesting that irisin and its receptor may represent a novel molecular target for the treatment of obesity and obesity-related diabetes. Previous reports provide conflicting evidence regarding circulating irisin levels in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). METHODS: This study investigated plasma irisin concentrations in 79 T2DM individuals, assessing potential associations with measures of segmental body composition, markers of endothelial dysfunction and peripheral blood mononuclear cell telomere length (TL). RESULTS: Resting, overnight-fasted plasma irisin levels were significantly higher in this group of T2DM patients compared with levels we previously reported in healthy volunteers (p < 0.001). Moreover, plasma irisin displayed a positive correlation with body mass index (p = 0.04), body fat percentage (p = 0.03), HbA1c (p = 0.03) and soluble E-selectin (p < 0.001). A significant negative association was observed between plasma irisin and visceral adiposity (p = 0.006) in T2DM patients. Multiple regression analysis revealed that circulating soluble E-selectin levels could be predicted by plasma irisin (p = 0.004). Additionally, cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) exposed to 200 ng/ml irisin for 4 h showed a significant fourfold increase in E-selectin and 2.5-fold increase in ICAM-1 gene expression (p = 0.001 and p = 0.015 respectively), and there was a 1.8-fold increase in soluble E-selectin in conditioned media (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: These data suggest that elevated plasma irisin in T2DM is associated with indices of adiposity, and that irisin may be involved in pro-atherogenic endothelial disturbances that accompany obesity and T2DM. Accordingly, irisin may constitute a potentially novel therapeutic opportunity in the field of obesity and cardiovascular diabetology

    Safety and efficacy of non–vitamin K oral anticoagulant for atrial fibrillation patients after percutaneous coronary intervention::A bivariate analysis of the PIONEER AF-PCI and RE-DUAL PCI trial

    Background: The tradeoff in safety versus efficacy in substituting a non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant for a vitamin K antagonist (VKA) in the stented atrial fibrillation patient has not been quantitatively evaluated. Methods: Based on summary data from the PIONEER AF-PCI and RE-DUAL PCI trials, 4 antithrombotic regimens were compared with VKA-based triple therapy: (1) rivaroxaban (riva) 15 mg daily + P2Y(12) inhibitor, (2) riva 2.5 mg twice daily + P2Y(12) inhibitor + aspirin, (3) dabigatran (dabi) 110 mg twice daily + P2Y(12) inhibitor, and (4) dabi 150 mg twice daily + P2Y(12) inhibitor. A bivariate model with a noninferiority margin of 1.38 was used to simultaneously assess safety and efficacy. The safety end point was major or clinically relevant nonmajor bleeding by International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis definitions. The efficacy end point was a thromboembolic event (myocardial infarction, stroke, or systemic embolism), death, or urgent revascularization. The bivariate outcome, a measure of risk difference in the net clinical outcome, was compared between antithrombotic regimens. Results: All 4 non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant regimens were superior in bleeding and noninferior in efficacy compared with triple therapy with VKA. Riva 15 mg daily and 2.5 mg twice daily were associated with bivariate combined risk reductions of 5.6% (2.3%-8.8%) and 5.5% (2.1%-8.7%), respectively, and dabi 110 mg twice daily and 150 mg twice daily reduced the bivariate risk by 3.8% (0.5%-7.0%) and 6.3% (2.4%-9.8%), respectively. Conclusions: A bivariate analysis that simultaneously characterizes both risk and benefit demonstrates that riva-and dabi-based regimens were both favorable over VKA plus dual antiplatelet therapy among patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing PCI.
