Examining the relationship between academic book citations and Goodreads reader opinion and rating

    Get PDF
215-221Although the traditional bibliometric citation database is an established academic impact assessment source, in this paper, we examine the role of social media impact on academic books. We identified the highly cited books in Scopus and compared the citations with ratings and reviews on the Goodreads website. R stat was used to extract the data from Goodreads website. We found that there is an uneven distribution of Goodreads rating and reviews. Social science books received the highest number of user‘s ratings, reviews and citations. The study finds that there is no relationship between citation counts and Goodreads ratings and reviews count in social science books. Although social science books generated the highest number of studies and engagement by the readers, there seems to be no evidence to suggest that this engagement results in an academic citation. Whereas, a correlation was observed between health science books citations and Goodreads overall rating, as with physical science book reviews and Google Scholar citation counts

The present study focuses on an evaluation of intercity Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) performance delivery on customer satisfaction and commuter services. Its objective is to evaluate the customers’ satisfaction of KTMB intercity towards the performance delivery of various services. As such, a framework was proposed for major dimensions which have an impact on the level of services satisfaction provided by my KTM commuter. Furthermore, the study employed qualitative and quantitative methods for the purpose of analysis. Data was obtained using 600 questionnaires and 18 staff via interview session. The findings show that status and age of respondents have no significant influence on safety and security, cleanliness, facilities, as well as services except between the categorical variables; quality, punctuality and price which have significant differences tangled with the performance of commuter service. From all the responses that were pointed out by interviewees, the most significant reason for the persistence of the problems is MyCommuter launched by KTM, which is the unbalanced momentum of systematic management. Also, it was realised that the heterogeneous variations of lower fairness within the system will affect the punctuality, functions of commuter, the breakdown of the trains, limitation of commuters, and etc in a negative direction. Important areas of priorities for the improvisation of commuter services are the holistic coordination of effective and continuous monitoring of system in terms of systematic management. Lastly, the present study suggests conducting an extensive study in comparing KTMB and ETS services to enhance the quality of their services

Water quality and its interlinkages with the Sustainable Development Goals

    Get PDF
Interlinkages among the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) lead to important trade-offs and synergies among the goals and their underlying targets. The aim of this paper is to review the role of water quality as an agent of interlinkages among the SDGs. It was found that there are a small number of explicit interconnections, but many more inferred interlinkages between water quality and various targets. A review of case studies showed that interlinkages operate from the municipal to near global scales, that their importance is likely to increase in developing countries, and that new SDG indicators are needed to monitor them. The analysis identifies many different SDG target areas where a combined effort between the water quality community and other sectors would bring mutual benefits in achieving the water quality and other targets

Ontology Model for Spatio-Temporal Contexts in Smart Home Environments

    No full text
Part 1: Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), Internet of Things (IoT)International audienceSmart home environment supports in simplifying the daily routines of the residents by learning the repetitive tasks and automating the activities. Sensors provide an unobtrusive way of collecting the state change in the environment, residents and the objects. The numbers of sensors are directly proportional to the cost and power consumptions. The sensor to activity mapping can be used for various task in smart home environment like the sensor optimization and sensor placement. Though the data-driven methods are proven to provide accurate results for recognizing activities, it does not provide context information for sensor to activity mapping. This paper deals with identifying sensors used in an activity, based on the spatial and temporal contexts. An ontology model is developed for representing the real-time smart home sensor data. A rule-based reasoner is developed using SWRL and SQWRL to infer spatial and temporal contexts. In SWRL rules, spatial context provides insight on where an activity happens. This becomes vital when more than one activity takes place at two different places. Thereby, the sensors responsible for monitoring an activity during the occurrence of concurrent events are derived. Similarly, with the help of temporal information, the path covered by the user when performing an activity is traced. The results from the developed expert system serve as input for sensor optimization task

LipiTk: A Generic Toolkit for Online Handwriting Recognition

    No full text
This paper describes Lipi Toolkit (LipiTk)- a generic toolkit whose aim is to facilitate development of online handwriting recognition engines for new scripts, and simplify integration of the resulting engines into real-world application contexts. The toolkit provides robust implementations of tools, algorithms, scripts and sample code necessary to support the activities of handwriting data collection and annotation, training and evaluation of recognizers, packaging of engines and their integration into pen-based applications. The toolkit is designed to be extended with new tools and algorithms to meet the requirements of specific scripts and applications. The toolkit attempts to satisfy the requirements of a diverse set of users, such as researchers, commercial technology providers, do-ityourself enthusiasts and application developers. In this paper we describe the first version of the toolkit which focuses on isolated online handwritten shape and character recognition

Examining the Impact of Self-Promotion on Job Interviews: A Case Study of Malaysian Fresh Graduate Teachers

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to examine how a particular cohort of applicants, who were seeking teaching positions in an international school were working with students experiencing learning difficulties, responded to the job interview question "why should we hire you." By analyzing their responses, the aim was to understand how these teachers engaged in self-promotion to create a favorable impression of the interviewer. A qualitative research approach was utilised to analyse the data collected, which consisted of interviews conducted with five successful candidates. The findings of this study indicated that these candidates encountered challenges in effectively demonstrating self-promotion during their job interviews, despite being ultimately successful in obtaining positions. Furthermore, the results revealed a lack of confidence among the candidates, potentially stemming from their limited proficiency in employing appropriate vocabulary to convey their goals and strategies effectively. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the teaching curriculum incorporate self-promotion techniques to better equip undergraduate students for job interviews and enable them to effectively respond to standard interview questions, thus allowing them to showcase their capabilities more confidently and successfully
