The research was carried out with the aim of determining and assessing arm anaerobic power, leg anaerobic power and aerobic capacity in individuals with different branches of active sports. A total of 60 subjects engaged in active sports at Elite level in different branches participated in the study. These branches are; wrestling (group G, n:10), football (Group F, N = 10), bicycle (BI group, n = 10), boxing (BO group, n = 10), taekwondo (TA group, n = 10), and tennis (TE group, n = 10). The research was carried out in the performance Laboratory of Selçuk University School of Physical Education and Sports. For anaerobic measurements, two separate Monark branded Wingate ergometers for arm and leg were used. Shuttle run tests were performed for aerobic measurements. SPSS for Windows 15.0 package program was used in the calculation and assessment of the obtained data. The normality distribution of the measured parameters was determined by the Shapiro-Wilks test. One-way variance analysis (ANOVA) was used to determine the differences between sports branches. In determining the source of difference, the LCD and Dunnett's C were applied from Post-Hoc tests. Significance level was taken as 0.05 in this study. As a result of the leg Wingate ergometer test, the peak power values of wrestlers were found to be significantly different at p<0.05 level compared to those of football, boxing, taekwondo and tennis players. The results of arm Wingate ergometer test showed that the peak power values of the boxers and wrestlers were significantly different in p<0.05 compared to the athletes in other branches. When their MaxVO2 levels were examined, it was observed that the values of cyclists differ significantly in p<0.05 compared to the average of athletes in other branches except wrestlers.  Article visualizations

AbstractBackgroundFemoral hernias are relatively uncommon and have a higher risk for strangulation and incarceration. We introduce an alternative anterior tension free inlay patch technique by help of the endoscope for femoral hernia repair.MethodCharacteristics of patients undergoing femoral hernia repair between March 2006–April 2011 and description of the surgical technique is presented.ResultsWe analyzed our experience with this technique in 26 consecutive patients with femoral hernias (1 bilateral, 15 right, 10 left femoral hernia) in 5 year period. Seven of these 26 femoral hernias were recurrent and 2 of them were concomitant with inguinal hernia. Mean operation time was 30.0 ± 12.1 min. Seroma was seen in 2 patients at postoperative 1st week. There were no; hematoma, wound infection and separation of wound edges and early recurrence at postoperative 1st week and 1st month. The mean follow up period was 41.8 ± 18.2 months. All of 22 patients who were contacted were satisfied with the operation. There was no recurrence, chronic pain and foreign body feeling in any patient at the end of the follow-up period.ConclusionThis feasible and safe alternative anterior inlay patch repair might be used in all femoral hernias with the exception of the ones requiring intestinal resection

OBJECTIVES: To determine the serum and tissue levels of markers of impaired oxidative metabolism and correlate these levels with the histopathology and Alvarado score of acute appendicitis patients. METHOD: Sixty-five acute appendicitis patients (mean age, 31.4±12.06 years; male/female, 30/35) and 30 healthy control subjects were studied. The Alvarado score was recorded. Serum samples were obtained before surgery and 12 hours postoperatively to examine the total antioxidant status, total oxidant status, paraoxonase, stimulated paraoxonase, arylesterase, catalase, myeloperoxidase, ceruloplasmin, oxidative stress markers (advanced oxidized protein products and total thiol level) and ischemia-modified albumin. Surgical specimens were also evaluated. RESULTS: The diagnoses were acute appendicitis (n = 37), perforated appendicitis (n = 8), phlegmonous appendicitis (n = 12), perforated+phlegmonous appendicitis (n = 4), or no appendicitis (n = 4). The Alvarado score of the acute appendicitis group was significantly lower than that of the perforated+phlegmonous appendicitis group (p = 0.004). The serum total antioxidant status, total thiol level, advanced oxidized protein products, total oxidant status, catalase, arylesterase, and ischemia-modified albumin levels were significantly different between the acute appendicitis and control groups. There was no correlation between the pathological extent of acute appendicitis and the tissue levels of the markers; additionally, there was no correlation between the tissue and serum levels of any of the parameters. CONCLUSIONS: The imbalance of oxidant/antioxidant systems plays a role in the pathogenesis acute appendicitis. The Alvarado score can successfully predict the presence and extent of acute appendicitis

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The salivary mucin MUC7 (previously known as MG2) can adhere to various strains of streptococci that are primary colonizers and predominant microorganisms of the oral cavity. Although there is a growing interest in interaction between oral pathogens and salivary mucins, studies reporting the specific binding sites on the bacteria are rather limited. Identification and characterization of the specific interacting proteins on the bacterial cell surface, termed adhesins, are crucial to further understand host-pathogen interactions.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We demonstrate here, using purified MUC7 to overlay blots of SDS-extracts of <it>Streptococcus gordonii </it>cell surface proteins, 4 MUC7-binding bands, with apparent molecular masses of 62, 78, 84 and 133 kDa from the <it>Streptococcus gordonii </it>strain, PK488. Putative adhesins were identified by in-gel digestion and subsequent nanoLC-tandem mass spectrometry analysis of resultant peptides. The 62 kDa and 84 kDa bands were identified as elongation factor (EF) Tu and EF-G respectively. The 78 kDa band was a <it>hppA </it>gene product; the 74 kDa oligopeptide-binding lipoprotein. The 133 kDa band contained two proteins; alpha enolase and DNA-directed RNA polymerase, beta' subunit. Some of these proteins, for example alpha enolase are expected to be intracellular, however, flow cytometric analysis confirmed its location on the bacterial surface.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our data demonstrated that <it>S. gordonii </it>expressed a number of putative MUC7 recognizing proteins and these contribute to MUC7 mucin binding of this streptococcal strain.</p

In this study graph set covering problem which is a problem of defining relations in a network by using less number of objects, is examined by the aid of graphs that are used mostly in design of communication networks. Cover problem is also known as the distinct optimization problem in this field of study. The problem of placement of emergency phones in Ege University Campus to provide security is considered as a cover problem. This study aims on the assessment of the situations of tactical orientation of 36 young, elite soccer players born in the years 1999-2000-2001, selected between 2 cities, 6 teams which belong to Cyprus Turkish Football Association (Kıbrıs Türk Futbol Federasyonu) in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. This study evaluates the aspects in two ways. In order to evaluate the tactical directed situations, specific tactics and creative performance were measured with respect to Game Test. In case 1, Longitudinal design was carried to analyse intra-individual improvements of elite young football players according to football-specific creativity and tactical game intelligence by using a dynamic performance diagnostic tool. In case 2, cross-sectional design was carried in which objective, valid, differentiative enough to record, tactical indicators were created to measure football-specific creativity and game intelligence as a diagnostic instrument. In both of the studies, different evaluation criteria were spotted and with these criteria, players were scored. According to these scores, divergent tactical thinking results has been obtained. The results according to divergent tactical thinking showed that disparate changes were obtained in between the players of KTFF U-21. As a result, the practical implications for the processes of training has been deeply discussed in both cases
