Preparación y caracterización de oleogeles con sebo y sebo parcialmente hidrolizado como organogeladores
The aim of this study was to evaluate the organogelation potential of tallow fat (TF) and partially hydrolyzed tallow fat (HTF) against saturated monoglyceride (MG) and a saturated monoglyceride + diglyceride mixture (MDG) as the organogelators. TF itself created oleogel at a 30% addition level, while HTF, MG and MDG oleogels were prepared at 10% addition levels. Fatty acid composition data showed that the oleogel of HTF (HTFO) was quite similar to those of MG and MDG oleogels. Solid fat content, free fatty acidity and peroxide values were found to be in acceptable ranges for HTFO. Thermal properties, crystal morphology and X-ray diffraction patterns were also evaluated. Rheological analyses indicated that all oleogels had higher storage modulus (G´) than loss modulus (G´´). The time-sweep test showed that after applying higher shear rates, the gels re-formed at rest. Further, all oleogels maintained their gelled consistency until around 54 °C. The results suggest that HTF could be a cheap, efficient, fast melting, safe and readily available organogelator.El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el potencial de la organogelación de grasa de sebo (GS) y grasa de sebo parcialmente hidrolizada (GSH) contra monoglicéridos saturados (MG) y mezcla de monoglicéridos + diglicéridos saturados (MDG) como organogelantes. Con la propia GS se creó un oleogel con un nivel de adición del 30%, mientras que los oleogeles de GSH, MG y MDG se prepararon con niveles de adición del 10%. Los datos de composiciones de ácidos grasos mostraron que el oleogel de GSH (OGSH) era bastante similar a los oleogeles de MG y MDG. El contenido de grasa sólida, la acidez grasa libre y los valores de peróxido se encuentran en rangos aceptables para OGSH. También se evaluaron las propiedades térmicas, la morfología del cristal y los patrones de difracción de rayos X. Los análisis reológicos indicaron que todos los oleogeles tenían un módulo de almacenamiento (G´) mayor que el módulo de pérdida (G´´). La prueba de barrido de tiempo mostró que después de aplicar velocidades de cizallamiento más altas, los geles se reformaron en reposo. Además, todos los oleogeles protegieron su consistencia gelificada hasta alrededor de 54 °C de temperatura. Los resultados han sugerido que GSH podría ser un organogelador barato, eficiente, de fusión aguda, seguro y fácilmente disponible

HotRegion: a database of predicted hot spot clusters
Hot spots are energetically important residues at protein interfaces and they are not randomly distributed across the interface but rather clustered. These clustered hot spots form hot regions. Hot regions are important for the stability of protein complexes, as well as providing specificity to binding sites. We propose a database called HotRegion, which provides the hot region information of the interfaces by using predicted hot spot residues, and structural properties of these interface residues such as pair potentials of interface residues, accessible surface area (ASA) and relative ASA values of interface residues of both monomer and complex forms of proteins. Also, the 3D visualization of the interface and interactions among hot spot residues are provided. HotRegion is accessible at http://prism.ccbb.ku.edu.tr/hotregion
Drugs with anticholinergic side-effects in primary care
Background: Anticholinergic drugs in elderly people have been associated with some serious side.effects. Patients in Turkey tend to attend primary care centers to have prescriptions of the drugs they chronically use. However, very little are known about how frequent that these drugs are prescribed and their side-effects in Turkish population. We aimed to investigate the usage and side.effects of drugs with anticholinergic properties in patients over 65 years of age attending to primary care centers.Materials and Methods: Five hundred and sixty.three subjects were interviewed with a questionnaire of 16 questions inquiring their medication and possible side.effects. Timed up and go test (TUGT) and standardized mini.mental test (SMMT) were also performed.Results: Medical records of 563 individuals were screened to detect anticholinergic medication. Twenty.eight patients were using anticholinergic medication. Mean duration of anticholinergic medication usage was 3.17 years. Mean number of falls occurred in the previous year was 1.14 « 1.17. Mean SMMT score was 27.20 « 1.13. Mean TUGT scores mean was 12.4 « 1.25. Drowsiness in 18 patients (65%), dry mouth in 15 patients (53%), dry eyes in 15 patients (53%), constipation in 11 patients (39%), blurred vision in 11 patients (%39), urinary hesitancy in eight patients (28%), confusion in six patients (21%) were reported. We found that none of the subjects were evaluated in terms of fall risk or mental status by their doctors before the prescription of drugs with anticholinergic effects.Conclusions: A suggested approach to improve drug safety was reported as to reduce the use of anticholinergic drugs when it is possible. Psychiatrists and family physicians should select less anticholinergic drugs for medication and have to evaluate their patientsf fall risk and their cognitive status before prescribing drugs with anticholinergic side effects.Key words: Anticholinergic side effects, cognitive status, fall risk, primary car
Effects of Aflatoxin on Some Haematological Parameters and Protective Effectiveness of Esterified Glucomannan in Merino Rams
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the toxic effects of aflatoxin on some hematological parameters and to determine the preventive effectiveness of added glucomannan. In the study, 32 Merino rams were used, and the rams were separated equally to four groups as control (C), glucomannan (G), glucomannan + aflatoxin (AG), and aflatoxin (A). Erythrocyte, leukocyte count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit levels were decreased in A group compared with the other groups, and there was a reduction in similar parameters in AG group compared to control values. On the other hand, these parameters were tended to increase in AG group compared to A group values. Aflatoxicosis caused the lymphocytopenia and monocytopenia but increased percentage of neutrophil counts. In conclusion, the results determined in the study might be important to demonstrate the effects of aflatoxicosis and glucomannan on some haematological parameters before the clinical symptoms appear
A Jupiter-mass planet around the K0 giant HD 208897
For over 10 years, we have carried out a precise radial velocity (RV) survey
to find substellar companions around evolved G,K-type stars to extend our
knowledge of planet formation and evolution. We performed high precision RV
measurements for the giant star HD 208897 using an iodine (I2) absorption cell.
The measurements were made at T\"UB\.ITAK National Observatory (TUG, RTT150)
and Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO). For the origin of the periodic
variation seen in the RV data of the star, we adopted a Keplerian motion caused
by an unseen companion. We found that the star hosts a planet with a minimum
mass of m2sini=1.40MJ, which is relatively low compared to those of known
planets orbiting evolved intermediate-mass stars. The planet is in a nearly
circular orbit with a period of P=353 days at about 1 AU distance from the host
star. The star is metal rich and located at the early phase of ascent along the
red giant branch. The photometric observations of the star at Ankara University
Kreiken Observatory (AUKR) and the HIPPARCOS photometry show no sign of
variation with periods associated with the RV variation. Neither bisector
velocity analysis nor analysis of the Ca II and Halpha lines shows any
correlation with the RV measurements
Pion wave functions from holographic QCD and the role of infrared renormalons in photon-photon collisions
In this article, we calculate the contribution of the higher-twist Feynman
diagrams to the large- inclusive single pion production cross section in
photon-photon collisions in case of the running coupling and frozen coupling
approaches within holographic QCD. We compare the resummed higher-twist cross
sections with the ones obtained in the framework of the frozen coupling
approach and leading-twist cross section. Also, we show that in the context of
frozen coupling approach a higher-twist contribution to the photon-photon
collisions cross section is normalized in terms of the pion electromagnetic

HotSprint: database of computational hot spots in protein interfaces
We present a new database of computational hot spots in protein interfaces: HotSprint. Hot spots are residues comprising only a small fraction of interfaces yet accounting for the majority of the binding energy. HotSprint contains data for 35 776 protein interfaces among 49 512 protein interfaces extracted from the multi-chain structures in Protein Data Bank (PDB) as of February 2006. The conserved residues in interfaces with certain buried accessible solvent area (ASA) and complex ASA thresholds are flagged as computational hot spots. The predicted hot spots are observed to correlate with the experimental hot spots with an accuracy of 76%. Several machine-learning methods (SVM, Decision Trees and Decision Lists) are also applied to predict hot spots, results reveal that our empirical approach performs better than the others. A web interface for the HotSprint database allows users to browse and query the hot spots in protein interfaces. HotSprint is available at http://prism.ccbb.ku.edu.tr/hotsprint; and it provides information for interface residues that are functionally and structurally important as well as the evolutionary history and solvent accessibility of residues in interfaces
