Oxidation of biogenic and water-soluble compounds in aqueous and organic aerosol droplets by ozone: a kinetic and product analysis approach using laser Raman tweezers
The results of an experimental study into the oxidative degradation of proxies for atmospheric aerosol are presented. We demonstrate that the laser Raman tweezers method can be used successfully to obtain uptake coeffcients for gaseous oxidants on individual aqueous and organic droplets, whilst the size and composition of the droplets is simultaneously followed. A laser tweezers system was used to trap individual droplets containing an unsaturated organic compound in either an aqueous or organic ( alkane) solvent. The droplet was exposed to gas- phase ozone and the reaction kinetics and products followed using Raman spectroscopy. The reactions of three different organic compounds with ozone were studied: fumarate anions, benzoate anions and alpha pinene. The fumarate and benzoate anions in aqueous solution were used to represent components of humic- like substances, HULIS; a alpha- pinene in an alkane solvent was studied as a proxy for biogenic aerosol. The kinetic analysis shows that for these systems the diffusive transport and mass accommodation of ozone is relatively fast, and that liquid- phase di. ffusion and reaction are the rate determining steps. Uptake coe. ffcients, g, were found to be ( 1.1 +/- 0.7) x 10(-5), ( 1.5 +/- 0.7) x 10 (-5) and ( 3.0 - 7.5) x 10 (-3) for the reactions of ozone with the fumarate, benzoate and a- pinene containing droplets, respectively. Liquid- phase bimolecular rate coe. cients for reactions of dissolved ozone molecules with fumarate, benzoate and a- pinene were also obtained: k(fumarate) = ( 2.7 +/- 2) x 10 (5), k(benzoate) = ( 3.5 +/- 3) x 10 (5) and k(alpha-pinene) = ( 1-3) x 10(7) dm(3) mol (-1) s (- 1). The droplet size was found to remain stable over the course of the oxidation process for the HULIS- proxies and for the oxidation of a- pinene in pentadecane. The study of the alpha- pinene/ ozone system is the first using organic seed particles to show that the hygroscopicity of the particle does not increase dramatically over the course of the oxidation. No products were detected by Raman spectroscopy for the reaction of benzoate ions with ozone. One product peak, consistent with aqueous carbonate anions, was observed when following the oxidation of fumarate ions by ozone. Product peaks observed in the reaction of ozone with alpha- pinene suggest the formation of new species containing carbonyl groups
Ventilation of small livestock trailers
A large number of livestock is transported to market in small box trailers. The welfare
of animals transported in this way is now assuming greater importance with the onset
of tougher EU legislation. This paper presents the first study into the ventilation of
small livestock trailers using experimental and computational methods. Wind tunnel
studies, using a 1/7th scale model, highlight the important influence of the towing
vehicle and trailer design on the airflow within the trailer. Detailed CFD analysis
agrees well with the wind tunnel data and offers the ability to assess the impact of
design changes
Self-organized current transport through low angle grain boundaries in YBaCuO thin films, studied magnetometrically
The critical current density flowing across low angle grain boundaries in
YBaCuO thin films has been studied magnetometrically.
Films (200 nm thickness) were deposited on SrTiO bicrystal substrates
containing a single [001] tilt boundary, with angles of 2, 3, 5, and 7 degrees,
and the films were patterned into rings. Their magnetic moments were measured
in applied magnetic fields up to 30 kOe at temperatures of 5 - 95 K; current
densities of rings with or without grain boundaries were obtained from a
modified critical state model. For rings containing 5 and 7 degree boundaries,
the magnetic response depends strongly on the field history, which arises in
large part from self-field effects acting on the grain boundary.Comment: 8 pages, including 7 figure
Qualitative research design and approaches in radiography
Introduction Radiography, as with other health care professions, aims towards establishing full professional recognition. A recognized research background is considered an essential component of this. Usually, emphasis is placed on quantitative research which focuses on the deductive component of the scientific 'confirmatory' method. However, this situation changed after the emergence of a post-positivist philosophy of medical research, which suggests the need for both quantitative and qualitative research to grasp a better understanding of the reality. The nature of qualitative research, unlike quantitative, is inductive and exploratory, providing insight into certain topics of which little is known and hence complementing quantitative research. Purpose: This article identifies the main qualitative research traditions that can be applied to radiography, providing a review in terms of their applications, areas of inquiry, and strengths and weaknesses according to the nature of the study. Previous radiography studies using qualitative approaches are critically reviewed to illustrate these issues. Their applications are also discussed based on the proposed radiography research framework by Adams and Smith, who identified broad radiography research areas aiming to further the research capacity of radiographers and the profession, especially by means of qualitative research.Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using the CINAHL and ScienceDirect databases and the journal Radiography, and by using the keywords qualitative research to identify articles focusing on qualitative research. Only articles that were related to health care disciplines were then selected for the review. Conclusion: Three approaches, that are grounded theory, phenomenology and ethnography, can all be applied to the proposed radiography research framework to study intra- and inter-professional issues and clinical practice, and patient and health delivery issues. Hence, qualitative research methods can be used to rigorously study these important areas so as to produce high quality outcomes and promote the use of qualitative approaches in the radiography research culture
Red Queen Coevolution on Fitness Landscapes
Species do not merely evolve, they also coevolve with other organisms.
Coevolution is a major force driving interacting species to continuously evolve
ex- ploring their fitness landscapes. Coevolution involves the coupling of
species fit- ness landscapes, linking species genetic changes with their
inter-specific ecological interactions. Here we first introduce the Red Queen
hypothesis of evolution com- menting on some theoretical aspects and empirical
evidences. As an introduction to the fitness landscape concept, we review key
issues on evolution on simple and rugged fitness landscapes. Then we present
key modeling examples of coevolution on different fitness landscapes at

On the Nature and Genesis of EUV Waves: A Synthesis of Observations from SOHO, STEREO, SDO, and Hinode
A major, albeit serendipitous, discovery of the SOlar and Heliospheric
Observatory mission was the observation by the Extreme Ultraviolet Telescope
(EIT) of large-scale Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) intensity fronts propagating
over a significant fraction of the Sun's surface. These so-called EIT or EUV
waves are associated with eruptive phenomena and have been studied intensely.
However, their wave nature has been challenged by non-wave (or pseudo-wave)
interpretations and the subject remains under debate. A string of recent solar
missions has provided a wealth of detailed EUV observations of these waves
bringing us closer to resolving their nature. With this review, we gather the
current state-of-art knowledge in the field and synthesize it into a picture of
an EUV wave driven by the lateral expansion of the CME. This picture can
account for both wave and pseudo-wave interpretations of the observations, thus
resolving the controversy over the nature of EUV waves to a large degree but
not completely. We close with a discussion of several remaining open questions

Search for varying constants of nature from astronomical observation of molecules
The status of searches for possible variation in the constants of nature from
astronomical observation of molecules is reviewed, focusing on the
dimensionless constant representing the proton-electron mass ratio
. The optical detection of H and CO molecules with large
ground-based telescopes (as the ESO-VLT and the Keck telescopes), as well as
the detection of H with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph aboard the Hubble
Space Telescope is discussed in the context of varying constants, and in
connection to different theoretical scenarios. Radio astronomy provides an
alternative search strategy bearing the advantage that molecules as NH
(ammonia) and CHOH (methanol) can be used, which are much more sensitive to
a varying than diatomic molecules. Current constraints are
for redshift , corresponding to
look-back times of 10-12.5 Gyrs, and for
, corresponding to half the age of the Universe (both at 3
statistical significance). Existing bottlenecks and prospects for future

Does centrality in a cross-sectional network suggest intervention targets for social anxiety disorder?
Objective: Network analysis allows us to identify the most interconnected (i.e., central) symptoms, and multiple authors have suggested that these symptoms might be important treatment targets. This is because change in central symptoms (relative to others) should have greater impact on change in all other symptoms. It has been argued that networks derived from cross-sectional data may help identify such important symptoms. We tested this hypothesis in social anxiety disorder. Method: We first estimated a state-of-the-art regularized partial correlation network based on participants with social anxiety disorder (n = 910) to determine which symptoms were more central. Next, we tested whether change in these central symptoms were indeed more related to overall symptom change in a separate dataset of participants with social anxiety disorder who underwent a variety of treatments (n = 244). We also tested whether relatively superficial item properties (infrequency of endorsement and variance of items) might account for any effects shown for central symptoms. Results: Centrality indices successfully predicted how strongly changes in items correlated with change in the remainder of the items. Findings were limited to the measure used in the network and did not generalize to three other measures related to social anxiety severity. In contrast, infrequency of endorsement showed associations across all measures. Conclusions: The transfer of recently published results from cross-sectional network analyses to treatment data is unlikely to be straightforward. An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics
For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types
Evidence of Color Coherence Effects in W+jets Events from ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV
We report the results of a study of color coherence effects in ppbar
collisions based on data collected by the D0 detector during the 1994-1995 run
of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a center of mass energy sqrt(s) = 1.8
TeV. Initial-to-final state color interference effects are studied by examining
particle distribution patterns in events with a W boson and at least one jet.
The data are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence
implementations and to an analytic modified-leading-logarithm perturbative
