Luttinger liquids with boundaries: Power-laws and energy scales
We present a study of the one-particle spectral properties for a variety of
models of Luttinger liquids with open boundaries. We first consider the
Tomonaga-Luttinger model using bosonization. For weak interactions the boundary
exponent of the power-law suppression of the spectral weight close to the
chemical potential is dominated by a term linear in the interaction. This
motivates us to study the spectral properties also within the Hartree-Fock
approximation. It already gives power-law behavior and qualitative agreement
with the exact spectral function. For the lattice model of spinless fermions
and the Hubbard model we present numerically exact results obtained using the
density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm. We show that many aspects of
the behavior of the spectral function close to the boundary can again be
understood within the Hartree-Fock approximation. For the repulsive Hubbard
model with interaction U the spectral weight is enhanced in a large energy
range around the chemical potential. At smaller energies a power-law
suppression, as predicted by bosonization, sets in. We present an analytical
discussion of the crossover and show that for small U it occurs at energies
exponentially (in -1/U) close to the chemical potential, i.e. that bosonization
only holds on exponentially small energy scales. We show that such a crossover

User's guide for the Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet (SBUV) instrument first year ozone-S data set
Total-ozone and ozone vertical profile results for Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet/Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (SBUV/TOMS) Nimbus 7 operation from November 1978 to November 1979 are available. The algorithm used have been thoroughly tested, the instrument performance has been examined in details, and the ozone results have been compared with Dobson, Umkehr, balloon, and rocket observations. The accuracy and precision of the satellite ozone data are good to at least within the ability of the ground truth to check and are self-consistent to within the specifications of the instrument. The 'SBUV User's Guide' describes the SBUV experiment and algorithms used. Detailed information on the data available on computer tape is provided including how to order tapes from the National Space Science Data Center

Self-Policing: Dissemination and Adoption of Police Eyewitness Policies in Virginia
Professional policing organizations emphasize the importance of the adoption of sound police policies and procedures, but traditionally doing so has been left to individual agencies. State and local government typically does not closely regulate police, and neither federal constitutional rulings nor state law typically sets out in any detail the practices that police should follow. Thus, law enforcement agencies must themselves draft and disseminate policy. This paper presents the results of studies used to assess the adoption of eyewitness identification policies by law enforcement agencies in Virginia. Policymakers were focused on this problem because Virginia experienced a series of DNA exonerations in cases involving eyewitness misidentifications. In 2005, lawmakers enacted a law that required agencies to have some written policy in place. However, there was little guidance on what that policy should be. To remedy this problem, the state law enforcement policy agency, the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) promulgated, in 2011, a detailed model policy on eyewitness procedure. Nevertheless, as reported in a 2013 study, those model practices were only haltingly adopted. In particular, many agencies did not use blind or blinded lineups, in which the administrator does not know which photo is that of a suspect or cannot view which photo the eyewitness is examining. In Fall 2018, all of the over-three hundred law enforcement agencies in Virginia had their policies on this subject requested, using the state freedom of information law. The results show that there has now been widespread adoption of the DCJS model policy. Improved eyewitness identification practices have been adopted by the vast majority of agencies, including large and small agencies. This Article concludes by asking what contributed to the extensive dissemination of a model police policy, and what its implications are for improving police policy and practice without the use of regulation
Diagnosis, prescription and prognosis of a Bell-state filter by quantum process tomography
Using a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer, we apply the techniques of quantum
process tomography to characterize errors and decoherence in a prototypical
two-photon operation, a singlet-state filter. The quantum process tomography
results indicate a large asymmetry in the process and also the required
operation to correct for this asymmetry. Finally, we quantify errors and
decoherence of the filtering operation after this modification.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
A possible solution of the grain boundary problem for applications of high-Tc superconductors
It is shown that the critical current density of high-Tc wires can be greatly
enhanced by using a threefold approach, which consists of grain alignment,
doping, and optimization of the grain architecture. According to model
calculations, current densities of 4x10^6 A/cm2 can be achieved for an average
grain alignment of 10 degree at 77K. Based on this approach, a road to
competitive high-Tc cables is proposed.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figure
Adaptive homodyne measurement of optical phase
We present an experimental demonstration of the power of real-time feedback
in quantum metrology, confirming a theoretical prediction by Wiseman regarding
the superior performance of an adaptive homodyne technique for single-shot
measurement of optical phase. For phase measurements performed on weak coherent
states with no prior knowledge of the signal phase, we show that the variance
of adaptive homodyne estimation approaches closer to the fundamental quantum
uncertainty limit than any previously demonstrated technique. Our results
underscore the importance of real-time feedback for reaching quantum
performance limits in coherent telecommunication, precision measurement and

Der Temperaturgradient in der Hüllwand eines Brennstabs von Schnellen Brutreaktoren führt zu einer Vergrößerung der Hüllaufweitung verglichen mit Materialbestrahlungen.
Untersuchungen an einem dafür speziell gestalteten Brennstab führten zu dem Schluß, daß die Ursache hierzu verstärktes Porenschwellen ist. Dieses wird durch Heliumbläschen herbei geführt, welche im Temperaturgradienten wandern und durch Koaleszenz wachsen können. Somit wird der kritische Porenkeimradius schneller erreicht, als ohne Gradienten. Folglich ergibt sich hier eine größere Hüllaufweitung als man aus Materialbestrahlungen erwarten konnte, beim vorliegenden Material (DIN 1.4981 lg) um etwa 50%
