The formation of mixed germaniumâcobalt carbonyl clusters: an electrospray mass spectrometric study, and the structure of a high-nuclearity [GeâCoââ(CO)ââ]ÂČâ» anion
The reaction of [”â-Ge{Coâ(CO)â}â] with [Co(CO)â]â» has been monitored by electrospray mass spectrometry to detect the cluster anions generated. Conditions giving known mixed GeâCo carbonyl clusters were established, and a new high nuclearity cluster anion, [GeâCoââ(CO)ââ]ÂČâ» was detected. Conditions for its formation were optimised and it was subsequently isolated as its [EtâN]âș salt and characterised by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The GeâCoââ cluster core has a novel geometry with the two germanium atoms in semi-encapsulated positions, forming seven formal GeâCo bonds. There are also eighteen formal CoâCo bonds. Corresponding reactions of [”â-Si{Coâ(CO)â}â] with [Co(CO)â]â» were also investigated
Communicating research with the public : evaluation of an invasive earthworm education program
Ecologists are increasingly encouraged by funding agencies and professional societies to communicate their research with the public. However, most receive relatively little training in how to do this effectively. Furthermore, evaluation of whether such an investment by ecologists actually achieves conservation objectives is rare. We created an education program, involving print, television, radio, and internet media, to increase awareness about earthworm invasions and to discourage anglers from dumping earthworm bait. Using pre- and post-surveys, we evaluated our programâs success in reaching its target audience and in changing knowledge and behavior. Few participants (4.1%) recalled seeing the program material and knowledge of the fact that earthworms are non-native in Alberta remained low (15.8% before, 15.1% after). Further, after being told about the negative effects of earthworms in forests, 46.7% of the anglers surveyed stated they would not change their bait disposal behavior in the future, with many commenting that they did not believe earthworms could be harmful. These results highlight the importance of evaluating education programs, rather than assuming they are successful. Given many participants' doubts that earthworms have negative effects, both regulations and education may be needed to reduce earthworm introductions
Classification of some countable descendant-homogeneous digraphs
For finite q, we classify the countable, descendant-homogeneous digraphs in
which the descendant set of any vertex is a q-valent tree. We also give
conditions on a rooted digraph G which allow us to construct a countable
descendant-homogeneous digraph in which the descendant set of any vertex is

Waves as the source of apparent twisting motions in sunspot penumbrae
The motion of dark striations across bright filaments in a sunspot penumbra
has become an important new diagnostic of convective gas flows in penumbral
filaments. The nature of these striations has, however, remained unclear. Here
we present an analysis of small scale motions in penumbral filaments in both
simulations and observations. The simulations, when viewed from above, show
fine structure with dark lanes running outwards from the dark core of the
penumbral filaments. The dark lanes either occur preferentially on one side or
alternate between both sides of the filament. We identify this fine structure
with transverse (kink) oscillations of the filament, corresponding to a
sideways swaying of the filament. These oscillations have periods in the range
of 5-7 min and propagate outward and downward along the filament. Similar
features are found in observed G-band intensity time series of penumbral
filaments in a sunspot located near disk center obtained by the Broadband
Filter Imager (BFI) on board {\it Hinode}. We also find that some filaments
show dark striations moving to both sides of the filaments. Based on the
agreement between simulations and observations we conclude that the motions of
these striations are caused by transverse oscillations of the underlying bright

Modeling the Differences in Counted Outcomes using Bivariate Copula Models: with Application to Mismeasured Counts
This paper makes three contributions. First, it uses copula functions to obtain a flexible bivariate parametric model for nonnegative integer-valued data (counts). Second, it recovers the distribution of the difference in the two counts from a specifed bivariate count distribution. Third, the methods are applied to counts that are measured with error. Specifically we model the determinants of the difference between the self-reported number of doctor visits (measured with error) and true number of doctor visits (also available in the data used).
Phase-field approach to heterogeneous nucleation
We consider the problem of heterogeneous nucleation and growth. The system is
described by a phase field model in which the temperature is included through
thermal noise. We show that this phase field approach is suitable to describe
homogeneous as well as heterogeneous nucleation starting from several general
hypotheses. Thus we can investigate the influence of grain boundaries,
localized impurities, or any general kind of imperfections in a systematic way.
We also put forward the applicability of our model to study other physical
situations such as island formation, amorphous crystallization, or

High-frequency Oscillations in Small Magnetic Elements Observed with Sunrise/SuFI
We characterize waves in small magnetic elements and investigate their
propagation in the lower solar atmosphere from observations at high spatial and
temporal resolution. We use the wavelet transform to analyze oscillations of
both horizontal displacement and intensity in magnetic bright points found in
the 300 nm and the Ca II H 396.8 nm passbands of the filter imager on board the
Sunrise balloon-borne solar observatory. Phase differences between the
oscillations at the two atmospheric layers corresponding to the two passbands
reveal upward propagating waves at high frequencies (up to 30 mHz). Weak
signatures of standing as well as downward propagating waves are also obtained.
Both compressible and incompressible (kink) waves are found in the small-scale
magnetic features. The two types of waves have different, though overlapping,
period distributions. Two independent estimates give a height difference of
approximately 450+-100 km between the two atmospheric layers sampled by the
employed spectral bands. This value, together with the determined short travel
times of the transverse and longitudinal waves provide us with phase speeds of
29+-2 km/s and 31+-2 km/s, respectively. We speculate that these phase speeds
may not reflect the true propagation speeds of the waves. Thus, effects such as
the refraction of fast longitudinal waves may contribute to an overestimate of

Maximal induced matchings in triangle-free graphs
An induced matching in a graph is a set of edges whose endpoints induce a
-regular subgraph. It is known that any -vertex graph has at most
maximal induced matchings, and this bound is best
possible. We prove that any -vertex triangle-free graph has at most maximal induced matchings, and this bound is attained by any
disjoint union of copies of the complete bipartite graph . Our result
implies that all maximal induced matchings in an -vertex triangle-free graph
can be listed in time , yielding the fastest known algorithm for
finding a maximum induced matching in a triangle-free graph.Comment: 17 page
