Trapping of ultra-cold atoms with the magnetic field of vortices in a thin film superconducting micro-structure
We store and control ultra-cold atoms in a new type of trap using magnetic
fields of vortices in a high temperature superconducting micro-structure. This
is the first time ultra-cold atoms have been trapped in the field of magnetic
flux quanta. We generate the attractive trapping potential for the atoms by
combining the magnetic field of a superconductor in the remanent state with
external homogeneous magnetic fields. We show the control of crucial atom trap
characteristics such as an efficient intrinsic loading mechanism, spatial
positioning of the trapped atoms and the vortex density in the superconductor.
The measured trap characteristics are in good agreement with our numerical
simulations.Comment: 4pages, comments are welcom
A questionnaire-based investigation of the swimming puppy syndrome: 115 dogs
Swimming Puppy Syndrome (SPS) is a benign reversible condition of unknown etiology in multiple dog breeds. Affected dogs show laterally abducted limbs and are unable to stand and walk on their own. The current knowledge of this condition derives from few case reports or small case series. Therefore, the aim of this study was to collect data on the clinical course from a large cohort of dogs with SPS with an online questionnaire supported by video footage. Potential risk factors were compared between 110 litters with SPS and 103 unaffected litters. SPS was reported in 115 dogs from 48 different breeds comprising a wide range of small, middle, and large breeds. Litters with SPS were significantly smaller than unaffected litters. Cesarean sections were reported more frequently in affected litters, but the overall rate of reported birth complications did not differ significantly from unaffected litters. Most puppies were able to stand and walk at a median age of 4.5 weeks (up to 12 weeks) and clinical signs resolved at a median age of six weeks (up to 12 weeks). Puppies from large breeds showed faster recovery than puppies from medium and small breeds. Occasionally, residual deficits were reported and only three dogs failed to recover. A clustering of SPS occurred in closely related litters in four kennels of four different dog breeds (Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Golden Retriever, Miniature Bull Terrier, Norwich Terrier). The study shows the benign clinical course of SPS in a large cohort of puppies from multiple dog breeds. Potential risk factors including reports on birth complications, size and muscle mass compared to littermates and diet of the dam during pregnany were evaluated and no influence on the occurrence of SPS was identified
Comparison of low--energy resonances in 15N(alpha,gamma)19F and 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne and related uncertainties
A disagreement between two determinations of Gamma_alpha of the astro-
physically relevant level at E_x=4.378 MeV in 19F has been stated in two recent
papers by Wilmes et al. and de Oliveira et al. In this work the uncertainties
of both papers are discussed in detail, and we adopt the value
Gamma_alpha=(1.5^{+1.5}_{-0.8})10^-9eV for the 4.378 MeV state. In addition,
the validity and the uncertainties of the usual approximations for mirror
nuclei Gamma_gamma(19F) approx Gamma_gamma(19Ne), theta^2_alpha(19F) approx
theta^2_alpha(19Ne) are discussed, together with the resulting uncertainties on
the resonance strengths in 19Ne and on the 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne rate.Comment: 9 pages, Latex, To appear in Phys. Rev.
Expert Elicitation on Wind Farm Control
Wind farm control is an active and growing field of research in which the
control actions of individual turbines in a farm are coordinated, accounting
for inter-turbine aerodynamic interaction, to improve the overall performance
of the wind farm and to reduce costs. The primary objectives of wind farm
control include increasing power production, reducing turbine loads, and
providing electricity grid support services. Additional objectives include
improving reliability or reducing external impacts to the environment and
communities. In 2019, a European research project (FarmConners) was started
with the main goal of providing an overview of the state-of-the-art in wind
farm control, identifying consensus of research findings, data sets, and best
practices, providing a summary of the main research challenges, and
establishing a roadmap on how to address these challenges. Complementary to the
FarmConners project, an IEA Wind Topical Expert Meeting (TEM) and two rounds of
surveys among experts were performed. From these events we can clearly identify
an interest in more public validation campaigns. Additionally, a deeper
understanding of the mechanical loads and the uncertainties concerning the
effectiveness of wind farm control are considered two major research gaps
Respiratory infections regulated blood cells IFN-beta-PD-L1 pathway in pediatric asthma
Background Respiratory infections, in general, and rhinovirus infection specifically are the main reason for asthma exacerbation in children and programmed cell death protein 1 ligand (PD-L1) expression inhibits T cell responses. Objective Could the interferon (IFN) type I expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) improve disease exacerbation in pediatric asthma? Results Here we found increased level of PD-L1 messenger RNA (mRNA) in total blood cells isolated from preschool children with virus-induced asthma, with lower percentage of forced expiratory volume in 1 second and with high serum levels of the C-reactive-protein.Conclusions and Clinical Relevance These data indicate that, in the presence of infection in the airways of preschool children, worse asthma is associated with induced PD-L1 mRNA expression in blood cells. Further, type I IFN, IFN-beta, a cytokine that is involved in the clearance of infections, was found to be associated with a better lung function in asthmatic children. These data suggest that improving peripheral blood IFN type I expression in PBMCs in pediatric asthma could improve disease exacerbation due to suppressing PD-L1 expression in blood cells
The association of two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in growth hormone (GH) gene with litter size and superovulation response in goat-breeds
Two active mutations (A 781 G and A 1575 G) in growth hormone (GH) gene, and their associations with litter size (LS), were investigated in both a high prolificacy (Matou, n = 182) and a low prolificacy breed (Boer, n = 352) by using the PCR-RFLP method. Superovulation experiments were designed in 57 dams, in order to evaluate the effect of different genotypes of the GH gene on superovulation response. Two genotypes (AA and AB, CC and CD) in each mutation were detected in these two goat breeds. Neither BB nor DD homozygous genotypes were observed. The genotypic frequencies of AB and CC were significantly higher than those of AA and CD. In the third parity, Matou dams with AB or CC genotypes had significantly larger litter sizes than those with AA and CD (p < 0.05). On combining the two loci, both Matou and Boer dams with ABCD genotype had the largest litter sizes when compared to the other genotypes (p < 0.05). When undergoing like superovulation treatments, a significantly higher number of corpora lutea and ova, with a lower incidence of ovarian cysts, were harvested in the AB and CC genotypes than in AA and CD. These results show that the two loci of GH gene are highly associated with abundant prolificacy and superovulation response in goat breeds
Partial versus general compulsory solidarity: an experimental analysis
We focus on ways and means of solidarity and their more or less voluntary and involuntary character. Alternative ways of redistribution are modeled by combining redistribution as emergent from a non-discriminatory voluntary contribution mechanism, VCM, with an outside option for a “super-rich”, R, participant to donate to VCM participants. The outsider may discriminate between participants of the VCM on the basis of information accessible at a cost to her. Inclusion in and exclusion from the VCM are involuntary while contributions in it are voluntary. How involuntary inclusion of R in VCM affects her discriminatory voluntary donations and contribution behavior is explored experimentally
