Homogeneous links, Seifert surfaces, digraphs and the reduced Alexander polynomial
We give a geometric proof of the following result of Juhasz. \emph{Let
be the leading coefficient of the Alexander polynomial of an alternating knot
. If then has a unique minimal genus Seifert surface.} In
doing so, we are able to generalise the result, replacing `minimal genus' with
`incompressible' and `alternating' with `homogeneous'. We also examine the
implications of our proof for alternating links in general.Comment: 37 pages, 28 figures; v2 Main results generalised from alternating

Time, institutional support and quality of decision making in child protection:A cross-country analysis
This paper examines perceptions of time and institutional support for decision making and staff confidence in child welfare staffs ultimate decisions – examining differences and similarities between and within the service-oriented Nordic countries (Norway and Finland) and the risk-oriented Anglo-American countries (England and California). The study identifies a high degree of work pressure across all the countries, lines of predominantly vertical institutional support and relatively high confidence in decisions. Finland stands out with higher perceived work pressure and with a horizontal support line, whereas England stands out with workers having a lower degree of confidence in their own and others’ decisions
Measurement of the hyperfine structure of antihydrogen in a beam
A measurement of the hyperfine structure of antihydrogen promises one of the
best tests of CPT symmetry. We describe an experiment planned at the Antiproton
Decelerator of CERN to measure this quantity in a beam of slow antihydrogen
atoms.Comment: 5th International Symposium on Symmetries in Subatomic Physics

A Generalization of Martin's Axiom
We define the chain condition. The corresponding forcing axiom
is a generalization of Martin's Axiom and implies certain uniform failures of
club--guessing on that don't seem to have been considered in the
literature before.Comment: 36 page
Experimental Control and Characterization of Autophagy in Drosophila
Insects such as the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, which fundamentally reorganize their body plan during metamorphosis, make extensive use of autophagy for their normal development and physiology. In the fruit fly, the hepatic/adipose organ known as the fat body accumulates nutrient stores during the larval feeding stage. Upon entering metamorphosis, as well as in response to starvation, these nutrients are mobilized through a massive induction of autophagy, providing support to other tissues and organs during periods of nutrient deprivation. High levels of autophagy are also observed in larval tissues destined for elimination, such as the salivary glands and larval gut. Drosophila is emerging as an important system for studying the functions and regulation of autophagy in an in vivo setting. In this chapter we describe reagents and methods for monitoring autophagy in Drosophila, focusing on the larval fat body. We also describe methods for experimentally activating and inhibiting autophagy in this system and discuss the potential for genetic analysis in Drosophila to identify novel genes involved in autophagy
Phase diagram of two-lane driven diffusive systems
We consider a large class of two-lane driven diffusive systems in contact
with reservoirs at their boundaries and develop a stability analysis as a
method to derive the phase diagrams of such systems. We illustrate the method
by deriving phase diagrams for the asymmetric exclusion process coupled to
various second lanes: a diffusive lane; an asymmetric exclusion process with
advection in the same direction as the first lane, and an asymmetric exclusion
process with advection in the opposite direction. The competing currents on the
two lanes naturally lead to a very rich phenomenology and we find a variety of
phase diagrams. It is shown that the stability analysis is equivalent to an
`extremal current principle' for the total current in the two lanes. We also
point to classes of models where both the stability analysis and the extremal
current principle fail
