    Mode identification in rapidly rotating stars

    Context: Recent calculations of pulsation modes in rapidly rotating polytropic models and models based on the Self-Consistent Field method have shown that the frequency spectrum of low degree pulsation modes can be described by an empirical formula similar to Tassoul's asymptotic formula, provided that the underlying rotation profile is not too differential. Aims: Given the simplicity of this asymptotic formula, we investigate whether it can provide a means by which to identify pulsation modes in rapidly rotating stars. Methods: We develop a new mode identification scheme which consists in scanning a multidimensional parameter space for the formula coefficients which yield the best-fitting asymptotic spectra. This mode identification scheme is then tested on artificial spectra based on the asymptotic formula, on random frequencies and on spectra based on full numerical eigenmode calculations for which the mode identification is known beforehand. We also investigate the effects of adding random frequencies to mimic the effects of chaotic modes which are also expected to show up in such stars. Results: In the absence of chaotic modes, it is possible to accurately find a correct mode identification for most of the observed frequencies provided these frequencies are sufficiently close to their asymptotic values. The addition of random frequencies can very quickly become problematic and hinder correct mode identification. Modifying the mode identification scheme to reject the worst fitting modes can bring some improvement but the results still remain poorer than in the case without chaotic modes

    The potential for dietary factors to prevent or treat osteoarthritis

    Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease for which there are no disease-modifying drugs. It is a leading cause of disability in the UK. Increasing age and obesity are both major risk factors for OA and the health and economic burden of this disease will increase in the future. Focusing on compounds from the habitual diet that may prevent the onset or slow the progression of OA is a strategy that has been under-investigated to date. An approach that relies on dietary modification is clearly attractive in terms of risk/benefit and more likely to be implementable at the population level. However, before undertaking a full clinical trial to examine potential efficacy, detailed molecular studies are required in order to optimise the design. This review focuses on potential dietary factors that may reduce the risk or progression of OA, including micronutrients, fatty acids, flavonoids and other phytochemicals. It therefore ignores data coming from classical inflammatory arthritides and nutraceuticals such as glucosamine and chondroitin. In conclusion, diet offers a route by which the health of the joint can be protected and OA incidence or progression decreased. In a chronic disease, with risk factors increasing in the population and with no pharmaceutical cure, an understanding of this will be crucial

    Experimental Tests of Nonsurgical Reproductive Inhibitors to Prevent Coyote Reproduction

    Sterilization is an effective nonlethal tool to reduce livestock depredation by coyotes (Canis latrans) because adults without pups to provision are less likely to kill livestock. Surgical sterilization is costly and invasive, so identifying non-surgical methods for canids that allows wide-scale application is important. We conducted a preliminary assessment of two types of reproductive inhibitors (gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) vaccine and deslorelin, a GnRH agonist, on coyote reproductive capabilities. We treated captive coyotes with a GnRH vaccine (n = 6 males, n = 6 females) or deslorelin (n = 6 males), measured number of litters and pups born, and compared their behavior and hormone levels to captive coyote pairs in which the male was surgically vasectomized (n = 6). At least half of the pairs receiving treatment with either of the non-surgical reproductive inhibitors produced pups and litter size was larger than expected compared to historical records. Male coyotes treated with deslorelin showed decreased testosterone levels, whereas there was no difference in testosterone levels in males treated with GnRH vaccine compared to controls. Behavior did not differ between any groups. Despite the lack of efficacy of either reproductive inhibitor tested, our research suggests that hormonal alterations that disrupt reproduction of coyotes are unlikely to negatively affect behavior and further investigation of non-surgical reproductive inhibitors for wild canids is warranted

    Direct health costs of inflammatory polyarthritis 10 years after disease onset:Results from the Norfolk Arthritis Register

    Objectives: To explore the change in direct medical costs associated with inflammatory polyarthritis (IP) 10 to 15 years after its onset. Methods: Patients from the Norfolk Arthritis Register who had previously participated in a health economic study in 1999 were traced 10 years later and invited to participate in a further prospective questionnaire-based study. The study was designed to identify direct medical costs and changes in health status over a 6-month period using previously validated questionnaires as the primary source of data. Results: A representative sample of 101 patients with IP from the 1999 cohort provided complete data over the 6-month period. The mean disease duration was 14 years (SD 2.1, median 13.6, interquartile range 12.6–15.4). The mean direct medical cost per patient over the 6-month period was £1496 for IP (inflated for 2013 prices). This compared with £582 (95% CI £355–£964) inflated to 2013 prices per patient with IP 10 years earlier in their disease. The increased cost was largely associated with the use of biologics in the rheumatoid arthritis subgroup of patients (51% of total costs incurred). Other direct cost components included primary care costs (11%), hospital outpatient (19%), day care (12%), and inpatient stay (4%). Conclusion: The direct healthcare costs associated with IP have more than doubled with increasing disease duration, largely as a result of the use of biologics. The results showed a shift in the direct health costs from inpatient to outpatient service use

    Decontamination of the hospital environment : new technologies for infection control

    Environmental contamination is being increasingly recognized as a significant source of healthcare-associated infection (HAI). Cross-contamination of the patient from the environment can result from the direct transfer of organisms from the air and surfaces, or indirectly from the hospital environment via contact with healthcare workers or equipment. Traditional methods of environmental decontamination, including cleaning with disinfectants, and the standard infection control procedures implemented by modern Health Services, are critical to controlling the spread of potentially pathogenic microbial contaminants from environmental sources to the patient; however there is constant pressure to maintain, and indeed, improve on the standards that are in place to ensure optimal patient care. To address this issue, much research has been directed towards the development and testing of novel ‘whole-room’ environmental decontamination methods which could be used to enhance hospital hygiene, and consequently reduce the risk of HAI-acquisition from environmental sources. Gaseous methods such as the use of hydrogen peroxide, chlorine dioxide, ozone and steam, as well as ultraviolet and violet-blue visible light methods have all been laboratory tested, and to varying extents, clinically evaluated to assess their efficacy for environmental decontamination. This review article considers these different decontamination technologies, discussing their mechanism of action, antimicrobial efficacy, and advantages and limitations, with a view to providing the reader with a comprehensive overview of the technological advances being developed to reduce the levels of environmental contamination around patient areas, thus aiding in the fight against healthcare-associated infection
