Efficiently Computing {phi}-Nodes On-The-Fly
Recently, Static Single Assignment Form and Sparse Evaluation Graphs have been advanced for the efficient solution of program optimization problems. Each method is provided with an initial set of flow graph nodes that inherently affect a problem\u27s solution. Other relevant nodes are those where potentially disparate solutions must combine. Previously, these so-called {phi}-nodes were found by computing the iterated dominance frontiers of the initial set of nodes, a process that could take worst case quadratic time with respect to the input flow graph. In this paper we present an almost-linear algorithm for detemining exactly the same set of {phi}-nodes
Age estimation using carpals: study of a Slovenian sample to test Cameriere\u2019s method
Carpals are often used as age indicators. In a recent study, Cameriere et al. studied the use of the ratio between the total area of carpal bones and epiphyses of the ulna and radius (Bo) and carpals (Ca) as age indicators. The present study, of a sample of 158 Slovenian children and adolescents aged between 6 and 16 years, focused on analysing the best regression for age estimation. The regression model yielded the following equation:age = 3.411 + 0.942g + 20.927(Bo/Ca), and explained 91.6% of total variance (R2 = 0.916). The median of the absolute values of residuals (observed age minus predicted age) was 0.09 years, with a quartile deviation of 0.786 years, and a standard error of estimate of 0.658 years.
Comparisons between the previous equation referring to Slovenian children and the equivalent linear equation proposed by Cameriere et al. did not reveal any significant differences between the intercepts and slopes of the two linear models. These results suggested a common regression model for both Italian and Slovenian samples.
The common regression model, describing age as a linear function of gender and Bo/Ca ratio, yielded the following linear regression formula: age = 2.907 + 0.408g + 20.757(Bo/Ca). This model explained 86% of total variance (R2 = 0.86). The median of the absolute values of residuals (observed age minus predicted age) was 0.02 years, with a quartile deviation of 1.02 years and a standard error of estimate of 0.96 years
Towards a Formal Verification Methodology for Collective Robotic Systems
We introduce a UML-based notation for graphically modeling
systems’ security aspects in a simple and intuitive
way and a model-driven process that transforms graphical
specifications of access control policies in XACML. These
XACML policies are then translated in FACPL, a policy
language with a formal semantics, and the resulting policies
are evaluated by means of a Java-based software tool
Stiction, Adhesion Energy and the Casimir Effect in Micromechanical Systems
We measure the adhesion energy of gold using a micromachined doubly-clamped
beam. The stress and stiffness of the beam are characterized by measuring the
spectrum of mechanical vibrations and the deflection due to an external force.
To determine the adhesion energy we induce stiction between the beam and a
nearby surface by capillary forces. Subsequent analysis yields a value J/m that is a factor of approximately six smaller than predicted
by idealized theory. This discrepancy may be resolved with revised models that
include surface roughness and the effect of adsorbed monolayers intervening
between the contacting surfaces in these mesoscopic structures.Comment: RevTex, 4 pages, 4 eps figure
Hierarchical template matching for 3D myocardial tracking and cardiac strain estimation
Myocardial tracking and strain estimation can non-invasively assess cardiac functioning using subject-specific MRI. As the left-ventricle does not have a uniform shape and functioning from base to apex, the development of 3D MRI has provided opportunities for simultaneous 3D tracking, and 3D strain estimation. We have extended a Local Weighted Mean (LWM) transformation function for 3D, and incorporated in a Hierarchical Template Matching model to solve 3D myocardial tracking and strain estimation problem. The LWM does not need to solve a large system of equations, provides smooth displacement of myocardial points, and adapt local geometric differences in images. Hence, 3D myocardial tracking can be performed with 1.49 mm median error, and without large error outliers. The maximum error of tracking is up to 24% reduced compared to benchmark methods. Moreover, the estimated strain can be insightful to improve 3D imaging protocols, and the computer code of LWM could also be useful for geo-spatial and manufacturing image analysis researchers
Theory of x-ray absorption by laser-dressed atoms
An ab initio theory is devised for the x-ray photoabsorption cross section of
atoms in the field of a moderately intense optical laser (800nm, 10^13 W/cm^2).
The laser dresses the core-excited atomic states, which introduces a dependence
of the cross section on the angle between the polarization vectors of the two
linearly polarized radiation sources. We use the Hartree-Fock-Slater
approximation to describe the atomic many-particle problem in conjunction with
a nonrelativistic quantum-electrodynamic approach to treat the photon-electron
interaction. The continuum wave functions of ejected electrons are treated with
a complex absorbing potential that is derived from smooth exterior complex
scaling. The solution to the two-color (x-ray plus laser) problem is discussed
in terms of a direct diagonalization of the complex symmetric matrix
representation of the Hamiltonian. Alternative treatments with time-independent
and time-dependent non-Hermitian perturbation theories are presented that
exploit the weak interaction strength between x rays and atoms. We apply the
theory to study the photoabsorption cross section of krypton atoms near the K
edge. A pronounced modification of the cross section is found in the presence
of the optical laser.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, RevTeX4, corrected typoe
New results on pushdown module checking with imperfect information
Model checking of open pushdown systems (OPD) w.r.t. standard branching
temporal logics (pushdown module checking or PMC) has been recently
investigated in the literature, both in the context of environments with
perfect and imperfect information about the system (in the last case, the
environment has only a partial view of the system's control states and stack
content). For standard CTL, PMC with imperfect information is known to be
undecidable. If the stack content is assumed to be visible, then the problem is
decidable and 2EXPTIME-complete (matching the complexity of PMC with perfect
information against CTL). The decidability status of PMC with imperfect
information against CTL restricted to the case where the depth of the stack
content is visible is open. In this paper, we show that with this restriction,
PMC with imperfect information against CTL remains undecidable. On the other
hand, we individuate an interesting subclass of OPDS with visible stack content
depth such that PMC with imperfect information against the existential fragment
of CTL is decidable and in 2EXPTIME. Moreover, we show that the program
complexity of PMC with imperfect information and visible stack content against
CTL is 2EXPTIME-complete (hence, exponentially harder than the program
complexity of PMC with perfect information, which is known to be
EXPTIME-complete).Comment: In Proceedings GandALF 2011, arXiv:1106.081
Error mapping controller: a closed loop neuroprosthesis controlled by artificial neural networks
BACKGROUND: The design of an optimal neuroprostheses controller and its clinical use presents several challenges. First, the physiological system is characterized by highly inter-subjects varying properties and also by non stationary behaviour with time, due to conditioning level and fatigue. Secondly, the easiness to use in routine clinical practice requires experienced operators. Therefore, feedback controllers, avoiding long setting procedures, are required. METHODS: The error mapping controller (EMC) here proposed uses artificial neural networks (ANNs) both for the design of an inverse model and of a feedback controller. A neuromuscular model is used to validate the performance of the controllers in simulations. The EMC performance is compared to a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) included in an anti wind-up scheme (called PIDAW) and to a controller with an ANN as inverse model and a PID in the feedback loop (NEUROPID). In addition tests on the EMC robustness in response to variations of the Plant parameters and to mechanical disturbances are carried out. RESULTS: The EMC shows improvements with respect to the other controllers in tracking accuracy, capability to prolong exercise managing fatigue, robustness to parameter variations and resistance to mechanical disturbances. CONCLUSION: Different from the other controllers, the EMC is capable of balancing between tracking accuracy and mapping of fatigue during the exercise. In this way, it avoids overstressing muscles and allows a considerable prolongation of the movement. The collection of the training sets does not require any particular experimental setting and can be introduced in routine clinical practice
Extensive Spectroscopy and Photometry of the Type IIP Supernova 2013ej
We present extensive optical (, , and open CCD) and
near-infrared () photometry for the very nearby Type IIP SN ~2013ej
extending from +1 to +461 days after shock breakout, estimated to be MJD
. Substantial time series ultraviolet and optical spectroscopy
obtained from +8 to +135 days are also presented. Considering well-observed SNe
IIP from the literature, we derive bolometric calibrations from
and unfiltered measurements that potentially reach 2\% precision with a
color-dependent correction. We observe moderately strong Si II
as early as +8 days. The photospheric velocity () is
determined by modeling the spectra in the vicinity of Fe II
whenever observed, and interpolating at photometric epochs based on a
semianalytic method. This gives km s at +50
days. We also observe spectral homogeneity of ultraviolet spectra at +10--12
days for SNe IIP, while variations are evident a week after explosion. Using
the expanding photosphere method, from combined analysis of SN 2013ej and SN
2002ap, we estimate the distance to the host galaxy to be
Mpc, consistent with distance estimates from other methods. Photometric and
spectroscopic analysis during the plateau phase, which we estimated to be
days long, yields an explosion energy of
ergs, a final pre-explosion progenitor mass of ~M and a
radius of ~R. We observe a broken exponential profile beyond
+120 days, with a break point at + days. Measurements beyond this
break time yield a Ni mass of ~M.Comment: 29 pages, 23 figures, 15 tables, Published in The Astrophisical
