Limitations on the extent of off-center displacements in TbMnO3 from EXAFS measurements
We present EXAFS data at the Mn K and Tb L3 edges that provide upper limits
on the possible displacements of any atoms in TbMnO3. The displacements must be
less than 0.005-0.01A for all atoms which eliminates the possibility of
moderate distortions (0.02A) with a small c-axis component, but for which the
displacements in the ab plane average to zero. Assuming the polarization arises
from a displacement of the O2 atoms along the c-axis, the measured polarization
then leads to an O2 displacement that is at least 6X10^{-4}A, well below our
experimental limit. Thus a combination of the EXAFS and the measured electrical
polarization indicate that the atomic displacements likely lie in the range
6X10^{-4} - 5X10^{-3}A.Comment: submitted to PRB; 11 pages (preprint form) 7 figure
Superconductivity in Heavy Alkaline-Earths Intercalated Graphites
We report the discovery of superconductivity below 1.65(6) K in
Sr-intercalated graphite SrC6, by susceptibility and specific heat (Cp)
measurements. In comparison with CaC6, we found that the anisotropy of the
upper critical fields for SrC6 is much reduced. The Cp anomaly at Tc is smaller
than the BCS prediction indicating an anisotropic superconducting gap for SrC6
similar to CaC6. The significantly lower Tc of SrC6 as compared to CaC6 can be
understood in terms of "negative" pressure effects, which decreases the
electron-phonon coupling for both in-plane intercalant and the out-of-plane C
phonon modes. We observed no superconductivity for BaC6 down to 0.3 K.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

Aims: From an academic discourse explaining trends in drug-related attitudes and behaviours, ānormalisationā now also encompasses public health policy advocating ādenormalisationā of smoking. This study explored young peopleās attitudes and behaviours to cigarettes and e-cigarettes to ascertain whether a process of ārenormalisationā was underway. Methods: A six-month multi-method study was conducted in NW England. Data collection in April-July 2014 included a convenience sample survey of 233 students; secondary analysis of a 3,500 respondent survey; stakeholder interviews; participant observation sessions; focus groups; and participatory research events with over 100 students. Findings: With the public performance of āvapingā valued as an indicator of experienced use, young people used e-cigarettes primarily for flavour combinations and to perform ātricksā. Smoking cessation and nicotine consumption were less important motivations. When comparing e-cigarettes with eight indicators of normalisation ā additionally, legal status and risk perception ā there were indications of a growing cultural accommodation of āvapingā. Conclusion: The changing landscape of nicotine and non-nicotine products challenges traditional conceptualisations of āsmokingā and ānon-smokingā and problematises the notion of linear processes of normalisation in respect not just of young peopleās tobacco and nicotine use, but more generally, of delivery systems and the drugs dispensed within them, suggesting marketplace-differentiated normalisation
Echo-Mapping of Swift J1753.5-0127
We present two epochs of coordinated X-ray-optical timing observations of the
black hole candidate Swift J1753.5-0127 during its 2005 outburst. The first
epoch in July occurred at outburst peak. Two consecutive nights of observations
using the McDonald Observatory Argos camera with the Rossi X-ray Timing
Explorer show a consistent correlation with an immediate response and an
extended tail lasting ~5s. The properties of the variability and the
correlation are consistent with thermal reprocessing in an accretion disk. The
shortness of the lag suggests a short orbital period consistent with that
recently claimed. The second epoch in August used the VLT FORS2 HIT mode again
in conjunction with RXTE. Again a repeatable correlation is seen between two
independent subsets of the data. In this case, though, the cross-correlation
function has an unusual structure comprising a dip followed by a double-peak.
We suggest that this may be equivalent to the dip plus single peak structure
seen by Kanbach et al. (2001) in XTE J1118+480 and attributed there to
synchrotron emission; a similar structure was seen during later activity of
Swift J1753.5-0127 by Durant et al. (2008).Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal

Swift observations of the 2006 outburst of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi: II. 1D hydrodynamical models of wind driven shocks
Following the early Swift X-ray observations of the latest outburst of the
recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi in February 2006 (Paper I), we present new 1D
hydrodynamical models of the system which take into account all three phases of
the remnant evolution. The models suggest a novel way of modelling the system
by treating the outburst as a sudden increase then decrease in wind mass-loss
rate and velocity. The differences between this wind model and previous
Primakoff-type simulations are described. A more complex structure, even in 1D,
is revealed through the presence of both forward and reverse shocks, with a
separating contact discontinuity. The effects of radiative cooling are
investigated and key outburst parameters such as mass-loss rate, ejecta
velocity and mass are varied. The shock velocities as a function of time are
compared to the ones derived in Paper I. We show how the manner in which the
matter is ejected controls the evolution of the shock and that for a
well-cooled remnant, the shock deceleration rate depends on the amount of

Labour efficiency on-farm
End of project reportImprovements in milking efficiency have a greater influence than any other aspect of the dairy farmers work on overall farm labour inputs (Whipp, 1992). In order to facilitate the examination of milking process labour inputs, the milking process may be divided into the following three components: herding pre and post milking (transfer of cows to and from the milking parlour); milking (milking tasks / work routines within the parlour); and washing (washing of milking machine and yard). Meanwhile, within milking specifically, the number of cows milked per operator per hour is the best measure of both the performance of the operator and the milking installation (Clough, 1978). This is affected by the following three factors: the milking times of the cows, the number and arrangement of the milking units, and the operatorās work routine (Whipp, 1992). The addition of extra milking units will only increase milking performance if the operator has idle time during milking (Hansen, 1999)
Adsorption of acrolein, propanal, and allyl alcohol on Pd(111): a combined infrared reflectionāabsorption spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption study
Atomistic-level understanding of the interaction of Ī±,Ī²-unsaturated aldehydes and their derivatives with late transition metals is of fundamental importance for the rational design of new catalytic materials with the desired selectivity towards C=C vs. C=O bond partial hydrogenation. In this study, we investigate the interaction of acrolein, and its partial hydrogenation products propanal and allyl alcohol, with Pd(111) as a prototypical system. A combination of infrared reflectionāabsorption spectroscopy (IRAS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments was applied under well-defined ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions to obtain detailed information on the adsorption geometries of acrolein, propanal, and allyl alcohol as a function of coverage. We compare the IR spectra obtained for multilayer coverages, reflecting the molecular structure of unperturbed molecules, with the spectra acquired for sub-monolayer coverages, at which the chemical bonds of the molecules are strongly distorted. Coverage-dependent IR spectra of acrolein on Pd(111) point to the strong changes in the adsorption geometry with increasing acrolein coverage. Acrolein adsorbs with the C=C and C=O bonds lying parallel to the surface in the low coverage regime and changes its geometry to a more upright orientation with increasing coverage. TPD studies indicate decomposition of the species adsorbed in the sub-monolayer regime upon heating. Similar strong coverage dependence of the IR spectra were found for propanal and allyl alcohol. For all investigated molecules a detailed assignment of vibrational bands is reported
Swift observations of the 2006 outburst of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi: III. X-ray spectral modelling
Following the Swift X-ray observations of the 2006 outburst of the recurrent
nova RS Ophiuchi, we developed hydrodynamical models of mass ejection from
which the forward shock velocities were used to estimate the ejecta mass and
velocity. In order to further constrain our model parameters, here we present
synthetic X-ray spectra from our hydrodynamical calculations which we compare
to the Swift data. An extensive set of simulations was carried out to find a
model which best fits the spectra up to 100 days after outburst. We find a good
fit at high energies but require additional absorption to match the low energy
emission. We estimate the ejecta mass to be in the range (2-5) x 10^{-7} solar
masses and the ejection velocity to be greater than 6000 km/s (and probably
closer to 10,000 km/s). We also find that estimates of shock velocity derived
from gas temperatures via standard model fits to the X-ray spectra are much

Quantum process tomography of a controlled-NOT gate
We demonstrate complete characterization of a two-qubit entangling process -
a linear optics controlled-NOT gate operating with coincident detection - by
quantum process tomography. We use maximum-likelihood estimation to convert the
experimental data into a physical process matrix. The process matrix allows
accurate prediction of the operation of the gate for arbitrary input states,
and calculation of gate performance measures such as the average gate fidelity,
average purity and entangling capability of our gate, which are 0.90, 0.83 and
