    ppppωpp\to pp\omega reaction near threshold

    We analyze the total cross section data for ppppωpp \to pp\omega near threshold measured recently at SATURNE. Using an effective range approximation for the on-shell pppp S-wave final state interaction we extract from these data the modulus Ω=0.53|\Omega| = 0.53 fm4^4 of the threshold transition amplitude Ω\Omega. We present a calculation of various (tree-level) meson exchange diagrams contributing to Ω\Omega. It is essential that ω\omega-emission from the anomalous ωρπ\omega\rho\pi-vertex interferes destructively with ω\omega-emission from the proton lines. The contribution of scalar σ\sigma-meson exchange to Ω\Omega turns out to be negligibly small. Without introducing off-shell meson-nucleon form factors the experimental value Ω=0.53|\Omega|=0.53 fm4^4 can be reproduced with an ωN\omega N-coupling constant of gωN=10.7g_{\omega N}=10.7. The results of the present approach agree qualitatively with the J\"ulich model. We also perform a combined analysis of the reactions ppppπ0,pnπ+,ppη,ppωpp\to pp\pi^0, pn\pi^+, pp\eta, pp\omega and pnpnηpn\to pn\eta near threshold.Comment: Latex-file 6 pages, 2 Figure

    Brittle Rock Failure in the Steg Lateral Adit of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel

    Summary: During the crossing of brittle rock formations at the Lötschberg base tunnel, failure phenomena have been observed both at the tunnel face and at the walls. A detailed analysis has been undertaken to explain these behaviours, based on the recent developments of Canadian research on brittle failure mechanisms. At the tunnel walls, a very good agreement is found between the calculated and observed damage and between two prediction methods, i.e. a semi-empirical failure criterion and elastic calculations with the "brittle Hoek-Brown parameters.” Near the face, due to the 3D nature of the stress conditions, some limitations of these approaches have been highlighted, and the growth of wall failure has been analysed. This research allowed a better understanding of the brittle rock mass behaviour at the Lötschberg base tunnel and showed that brittle failure processes dominate the behaviour of deep, highly stressed excavations in massive to moderately jointed rock.     The geometry and electron gyrofrequency were calculated for both the North and South feet of the Io-threaded flux tube at several altitudes as a function of sub-Io longitude for various multipole field models. The models predict a maximum surface gyrofrequency equal to the observed high frequency limit of the decameter-wave radio emission (DAM) and tend to favor a mechanism involving transverse propagation from a source in the Northern hemisphere. Calculations indicate that the beaming pattern of the emission may be determined by reflection from the ionosphere rather than by inherent beaming from the source region

    Complex-Distance Potential Theory and Hyperbolic Equations

    An extension of potential theory in R^n is obtained by continuing the Euclidean distance function holomorphically to C^n. The resulting Newtonian potential is generated by an extended source distribution D(z) in C^n whose restriction to R^n is the delta function. This provides a natural model for extended particles in physics. In C^n, interpreted as complex spacetime, D(z) acts as a propagator generating solutions of the wave equation from their initial values. This gives a new connection between elliptic and hyperbolic equations that does not assume analyticity of the Cauchy data. Generalized to Clifford analysis, it induces a similar connection between solutions of elliptic and hyperbolic Dirac equations. There is a natural application to the time-dependent, inhomogeneous Dirac and Maxwell equations, and the `electromagnetic wavelets' introduced previously are an example.Comment: 25 pages, submited to Proceedings of 5th Intern.     A Kohn-Sham system at zero temperature

    An one-dimensional Kohn-Sham system for spin particles is considered which effectively describes semiconductor {nano}structures and which is investigated at zero temperature. We prove the existence of solutions and derive a priori estimates. For this purpose we find estimates for eigenvalues of the Schr\"odinger operator with effective Kohn-Sham potential and obtain W1,2W^{1,2}-bounds of the associated particle density operator. Afterwards, compactness and continuity results allow to apply Schauder's fixed point theorem. In case of vanishing exchange-correlation potential uniqueness is shown by monotonicity arguments. Finally, we investigate the behavior of the system if the temperature approaches zero.Comment: 27 page

    The Bispectrum of IRAS Galaxies

    We compute the bispectrum for the galaxy distribution in the IRAS QDOT, 2Jy, and 1.2Jy redshift catalogs for wavenumbers 0.05<k<0.2 h/Mpc and compare the results with predictions from gravitational instability in perturbation theory. Taking into account redshift space distortions, nonlinear evolution, the survey selection function, and discreteness and finite volume effects, all three catalogs show evidence for the dependence of the bispectrum on configuration shape predicted by gravitational instability. Assuming Gaussian initial conditions and local biasing parametrized by linear and non-linear bias parameters b_1 and b_2, a likelihood analysis yields 1/b_1 = 1.32^{+0.36}_{-0.58}, 1.15^{+0.39}_{-0.39} and b_2/b_1^2=-0.57^{+0.45}_{-0.30}, -0.50^{+0.31}_{-0.51}, for the for the 2Jy and 1.2Jy samples, respectively. This implies that IRAS galaxies trace dark matter increasingly weakly as the density contrast increases, consistent with their being under-represented in clusters. In a model with chi^2 non-Gaussian initial conditions, the bispectrum displays an amplitude and scale dependence different than that found in the Gaussian case; if IRAS galaxies do not have bias b_1> 1 at large scales, \chi^2 non-Gaussian initial conditions are ruled out at the 95% confidence level.     Observations of Rapid Disk-Jet Interaction in the Microquasar GRS 1915+105

    We present evidence that ~ 30 minute episodes of jet formation in the Galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105 may sometimes entirely be a superposition of smaller, faster phenomena. We base this conclusion on simultaneous X-ray and infrared observations in July 2002, using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and the Palomar 5 meter telescope. On two nights, we observed quasi-periodic infrared flares from GRS 1915+105, each accompanied by a set of fast oscillations in the X-ray light curve (indicating an interaction between the jet and accretion disk). In contrast to similar observations in 1997, we find that the duration of each X-ray cycle matches the duration of its accompanying infrared flare, and we observed one instance in which an isolated X-ray oscillation occurred at the same time as a faint infrared "subflare" (of duration ~ 150 seconds) superimposed on one of the main flares. From these data, we are able to conclude that each X-ray oscillation had an associated faint infrared flare and that these flares blend together to form, and entirely comprise, the ~ 30 minute events we observed. Part of the infrared emission in 1997 also appears to be due to superimposed small flares, but it was overshadowed by infrared-bright ejections associated with the appearance of a sharp "trigger" spike in each X-ray cycle that were not present in 2002. We also study the evolution of the X-ray spectrum and find significant differences in the high energy power law component, which was strongly variable in 1997 but not in 2002. Taken together, these observations reveal the diversity of ways in which the accretion disk and jet in black hole systems are capable of interacting and solidify the importance of the trigger spike for large ejections to occur on ~ 30 minute timescales in GRS 1915+105.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures; accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa
