    Uganda and Malawi field pilots of proposed LSMS fisheries module: summary report

    While an overwhelming majority of sub-Saharan African countries exhibit serious weaknesses in statistics pertaining to crop and livestock sectors, the deficiencies in terms of nationally representative data on the fishery sector are even more acute. The very little data available on the sector are essentially derived from case studies of selected fisheries, and the limited nationally representative data available are generally derived from a few questions included in the livestock section of household surveys. These do not permit the detailed characterization of the fishery production systems. As a consequence in many countries the decision-makers and planners lack the most basic information about the role and importance of the fisheries sector to their national economy. As part of an initiative called the Living Standards Measurement Study-Integrated Surveys on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA) project, a collaboration was developed between the World Bank and the WorldFish Center to address this situation.     In the search for new biologically active molecules, diversity-oriented synthetic strategies break through the limitation of traditional library synthesis by sampling new chemical space. Many natural products can be regarded as intriguing starting points for diversity-oriented synthesis, wherein stereochemically rich core structures may be reorganized into chemotypes that are distinctly different from the parent structure. Ideally, to be suited to library applications, such transformations should be general and involve few steps. With this objective in mind, the highly oxygenated natural product fumagillol has been successfully remodelled in several ways using a reaction-discovery-based approach. In reactions with amines, excellent regiocontrol in a bis-epoxide opening/cyclization sequence can be obtained by size-dependent interaction of an appropriate catalyst with the parent molecule, forming either perhydroisoindole or perhydroisoquinoline products.     Wave localization in binary isotopically disordered one-dimensional harmonic chains with impurities having arbitrary cross section and concentration

    The localization length for isotopically disordered harmonic one-dimensional chains is calculated for arbitrary impurity concentration and scattering cross section. The localization length depends on the scattering cross section of a single scatterer, which is calculated for a discrete chain having a wavelength dependent pulse propagation speed. For binary isotopically disordered systems composed of many scatterers, the localization length decreases with increasing impurity concentration, reaching a mimimum before diverging toward infinity as the impurity concentration approaches a value of one. The concentration dependence of the localization length over the entire impurity concentration range is approximated accurately by the sum of the behavior at each limiting concentration. Simultaneous measurements of Lyapunov exponent statistics indicate practical limits for the minimum system length and the number of scatterers to achieve representative ensemble averages. Results are discussed in the context of future investigations of the time-dependent behavior of disordered anharmonic chains.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, submitted to PR

    Lorentz-covariant deformed algebra with minimal length

    The DD-dimensional two-parameter deformed algebra with minimal length introduced by Kempf is generalized to a Lorentz-covariant algebra describing a (D+1D+1)-dimensional quantized space-time. For D=3, it includes Snyder algebra as a special case. The deformed Poincar\'e transformations leaving the algebra invariant are identified. Uncertainty relations are studied.     Influence of nanostructure and nitrogen content on the optical and electrical properties of reactively sputtered FeSiAl(N) films

    In this study, the optical properties and dc resistivity of a series of FeSiAl(N) films reactively sputtered with different partial pressures of N were investigated. Spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to measure the real and imaginary parts of the complex dielectric functions. There is a distinct micro/nanostructural transition from single-phase columnar body-centered-cubic (bcc) grains for partial pressure (pp) of nitrogen in sputtering gas ⩽4% to a two-phase nanocomposite of equiaxed bcc nanograins in an amorphous matrix for filmsdeposited with ⩾5% pp N. To assess the effect of surface oxidation on the optical properties, optical measurements were repeated on the 2 and 5% pp N films (representative of the two different types of films with different structures) after they were sputter etched in situ while performing depth profiling of the chemical composition using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The low-nitrogen films(⩽4% pp N) showed a dielectric function typical of a metal whose charge carrier contribution can be described by a classical free electron Drude model. The nanostructured films(⩾5% pp N) showed a positive real part of the dielectric functionε1and no evidence of free-carrier plasmon excitation. The optical conductivity decreased and the dc resistivity increased by about a factor of 2.5 as the film structure changed from a single phase columnar structure to the two-phase material that consisted of nanograins in an amorphous matrix
