Water recycling system using thermopervaporation method
A water recycling system concept for the crew of the space station is presented. A thermopervaporation method is a new key technology used for the distillation process, utilizing a hydrophobic membrane. An experimental study of thermopervaporation revealed that the permeation depends on the gap between the membrane and the cooling surface in the condensation room: the steam diffusion occurs with gaps less than 5 mm while natural convection becomes dominant with gaps more than 5 mm. A brief discussion of the system operation is also described

The fluctuation energy balance in non-suspended fluid-mediated particle transport
Here we compare two extreme regimes of non-suspended fluid-mediated particle
transport, transport in light and heavy fluids ("saltation" and "bedload",
respectively), regarding their particle fluctuation energy balance. From direct
numerical simulations, we surprisingly find that the ratio between collisional
and fluid drag dissipation of fluctuation energy is significantly larger in
saltation than in bedload, even though the contribution of interparticle
collisions to transport of momentum and energy is much smaller in saltation due
to the low concentration of particles in the transport layer. We conclude that
the much higher frequency of high-energy particle-bed impacts ("splash") in
saltation is the cause for this counter-intuitive behavior. Moreover, from a
comparison of these simulations to Particle Tracking Velocimetry measurements
which we performed in a wind tunnel under steady transport of fine and coarse
sand, we find that turbulent fluctuations of the flow produce particle
fluctuation energy at an unexpectedly high rate in saltation even under
conditions for which the effects of turbulence are usually believed to be
small

Deposition of lithium on a plasma edge probe in TFTR -- Behavior of lithium-painted walls interacting with edge plasmas
Recent observations have indicated that lithium pellet injection wall conditioning plays an important role in achieving the enhanced supershot regime in TFTR. However, little is understood about the behavior of lithium-coated limiter walls, interacting with edge plasmas. In the final campaign of TFTR, a cylindrical carbon fiber composite probe was inserted into the boundary plasma region and exposed to ohmically-heated deuterium discharges with lithium pellet injection. The ion-drift side probe surface exhibits a sign of codeposition of lithium, carbon, oxygen, and deuterium, whereas the electron side essentially indicates high-temperature erosion. It is found that lithium is incorporated in these codeposits in the form of oxide at the concentration of a few percent. In the electron side, lithium has been found to penetrate deeply into the probe material, presumably via rapid diffusion through interplane spaces in the graphite crystalline. Though it is not conclusive, materials mixing in the carbon and lithium system appears to be a key process in successful lithium wall conditioning
Nonlinear Optical Response Functions of Mott Insulators Based on Dynamical Mean Field Approximation
We investigate the nonlinear optical susceptibilities of Mott insulators with
the dynamical mean field approximation. The two-photon absorption (TPA) and the
third-harmonic generation (THG) spectra are calculated, and the classification
by the types of coupling to external fields shows different behavior from
conventional semiconductors. The direct transition terms are predominant both
in the TPA and THG spectra, and the importance of taking all types of
interaction with the external field into account is illustrated in connection
with the THG spectrum and dcKerr effect. The dependence of the TPA and THG
spectra on the Coulomb interaction indicate a scaling relation. We apply this
relation to the quantitative evaluation and obtain results comparable to those
of experiments.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure
