Daphnias: from the individual based model to the large population equation
The class of deterministic 'Daphnia' models treated by Diekmann et al. (J
Math Biol 61: 277-318, 2010) has a long history going back to Nisbet and Gurney
(Theor Pop Biol 23: 114-135, 1983) and Diekmann et al. (Nieuw Archief voor
Wiskunde 4: 82-109, 1984). In this note, we formulate the individual based
models (IBM) supposedly underlying those deterministic models. The models treat
the interaction between a general size-structured consumer population
('Daphnia') and an unstructured resource ('algae'). The discrete, size and
age-structured Daphnia population changes through births and deaths of its
individuals and throught their aging and growth. The birth and death rates
depend on the sizes of the individuals and on the concentration of the algae.
The latter is supposed to be a continuous variable with a deterministic
dynamics that depends on the Daphnia population. In this model setting we prove
that when the Daphnia population is large, the stochastic differential equation
describing the IBM can be approximated by the delay equation featured in
(Diekmann et al., l.c.)
Effects of aging and links removal on epidemic dynamics in scale-free networks
We study the combined effects of aging and links removal on epidemic dynamics
in the Barab\'{a}si-Albert scale-free networks. The epidemic is described by a
susceptible-infected-refractory (SIR) model. The aging effect of a node
introduced at time is described by an aging factor of the form
in the probability of being connected to newly added nodes
in a growing network under the preferential attachment scheme based on
popularity of the existing nodes. SIR dynamics is studied in networks with a
fraction of the links removed. Extensive numerical simulations reveal
that there exists a threshold such that for , epidemic
breaks out in the network. For , only a local spread results. The
dependence of on is studied in detail. The function
separates the space formed by and into regions

Immunization for complex network based on the effective degree of vertex
The basic idea of many effective immunization strategies is first to rank the
importance of vertices according to the degrees of vertices and then remove the
vertices from highest importance to lowest until the network becomes
disconnected. Here we define the effective degrees of vertex, i.e., the number
of its connections linking to un-immunized nodes in current network during the
immunization procedure, to rank the importance of vertex, and modify these
strategies by using the effective degrees of vertices. Simulations on both the
scale-free network models with various degree correlations and two real
networks have revealed that the immunization strategies based on the effective
degrees are often more effective than those based on the degrees in the initial

Conversion to sirolimus for chronic renal allograft dysfunction: risk factors for graft loss and severe side effects
We retrospectively reviewed our experience with 45 kidney transplant recipients (KTR) that were switched from CNI to SRL, mainly for chronic allograft dysfunction (CAD) (41/45). The mean serum creatinine at switch was 2.5 ± 0.8 mg/dl. At 1 year, patient survival was 93%. Death-censored graft survival was 67% at 1 year and 54% at 2 years. SRL was stopped because of severe side effects in 15 patients. Among these, eight patients developed ‘de novo’ high-grade proteinuria. Univariate analysis revealed that (1) a higher SRL level at 1 month was a predictor of SRL withdrawal due to severe side effects (P = 0.006), and (2) predictors of graft failure after SRL conversion were low SRL loading dose (P = 0.03) and a higher creatinine level at conversion (P = 0.003)
Epidemic threshold in structured scale-free networks
We analyze the spreading of viruses in scale-free networks with high
clustering and degree correlations, as found in the Internet graph. For the
Suscetible-Infected-Susceptible model of epidemics the prevalence undergoes a
phase transition at a finite threshold of the transmission probability.
Comparing with the absence of a finite threshold in networks with purely random
wiring, our result suggests that high clustering and degree correlations
protect scale-free networks against the spreading of viruses. We introduce and
verify a quantitative description of the epidemic threshold based on the
connectivity of the neighborhoods of the hubs.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Numerical study of the scaling properties of SU(2) lattice gauge theory in Palumbo non-compact regularization
In the framework of a non-compact lattice regularization of nonabelian gauge
theories we look, in the SU(2) case, for the scaling window through the
analysis of the ratio of two masses of hadronic states. In the two-dimensional
parameter space of the theory we find the region where the ratio is constant,
and equal to the one in the Wilson regularization. In the scaling region we
calculate the lattice spacing, finding it at least 20% larger than in the
Wilson case; therefore the simulated physical volume is larger.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figure
A generic map has no absolutely continuous invariant probability measure
Let be a smooth compact manifold (maybe with boundary, maybe
disconnected) of any dimension . We consider the set of maps
which have no absolutely continuous (with respect to Lebesgue)
invariant probability measure. We show that this is a residual (dense
C^1$ topology.
In the course of the proof, we need a generalization of the usual Rokhlin
tower lemma to non-invariant measures. That result may be of independent

Surface states and Rashba-type spin polarization in antiferromagnetic MnBiTe
The layered van der Waals antiferromagnet MnBiTe has been predicted
to combine the band ordering of archetypical topological insulators such as
BiTe with the magnetism of Mn, making this material a viable candidate
for the realization of various magnetic topological states. We have
systematically investigated the surface electronic structure of
MnBiTe(0001) single crystals by use of spin- and angle-resolved
photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. In line with theoretical predictions,
the results reveal a surface state in the bulk band gap and they provide
evidence for the influence of exchange interaction and spin-orbit coupling on
the surface electronic structure.Comment: Revised versio
Time- and momentum-resolved photoemission studies using time-of-flight momentum microscopy at a free-electron laser
Time-resolved photoemission with ultrafast pump and probe pulses is an emerging technique with wide application potential. Real-time recording of nonequilibrium electronic processes, transient states in chemical reactions, or the interplay of electronic and structural dynamics offers fascinating opportunities for future research. Combining valence-band and core-level spectroscopy with photoelectron diffraction for electronic, chemical, and structural analyses requires few 10 fs soft X-ray pulses with some 10 meV spectral resolution, which are currently available at high repetition rate free-electron lasers. We have constructed and optimized a versatile setup commissioned at FLASH/PG2 that combines free-electron laser capabilities together with a multidimensional recording scheme for photoemission studies. We use a full-field imaging momentum microscope with time-of-flight energy recording as the detector for mapping of 3D band structures in (kx, ky, E) parameter space with unprecedented efficiency. Our instrument can image full surface Brillouin zones with up to 7 Å−1 diameter in a binding-energy range of several eV, resolving about 2.5 × 105 data voxels simultaneously. Using the ultrafast excited state dynamics in the van der Waals semiconductor WSe2 measured at photon energies of 36.5 eV and 109.5 eV, we demonstrate an experimental energy resolution of 130 meV, a momentum resolution of 0.06 Å−1, and a system response function of 150 fs
Sediment history mirrors Pleistocene aridification in the Gobi Desert (Ejina Basin, NW China)
Central Asia is a large-scale source of dust transport, but it also held a prominent changing hydrological system during the Quaternary. A 223 m long sediment core (GN200) was recovered from the Ejina Basin (synonymously Gaxun Nur Basin) in NW China to reconstruct the main modes of water availability in the area during the Quaternary. The core was drilled from the Heihe alluvial fan, one of the world's largest alluvial fans, which covers a part of the Gobi Desert. Grain-size distributions supported by endmember modelling analyses, geochemical-mineralogical compositions (based on XRF and XRD measurements), and bioindicator data (ostracods, gastropods, pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs, and n-alkanes with leaf-wax delta D) are used to infer the main transport processes and related environmental changes during the Pleistocene. Magnetostratigraphy supported by radionuclide dating provides the age model. Grain- size endmembers indicate that lake, playa (sheetflood), fluvial, and aeolian dynamics are the major factors influencing sedimentation in the Ejina Basin. Core GN200 reached the pre-Quatemary quartz- and plagioclase-rich "Red Clay" formation and reworked material derived from it in the core bottom. This part is overlain by silt-dominated sediments between 217 and 110 m core depth, which represent a period of lacustrine and playa-lacustrine sedimentation that presumably formed within an endorheic basin. The upper core half between 110 and 0 m is composed of mainly silty to sandy sediments derived from the Heihe that have accumulated in a giant sediment fan until modem time. Apart from the transition from a siltier to a sandier environment with frequent switches between sediment types upcore, the clay mineral fraction is indicative of different environments. Mixed-layer clay minerals (chlorite/smectite) are increased in the basal Red Clay and reworked sediments, smectite is indicative of lacustrine-playa deposits, and increased chlorite content is characteristic of the Heihe river deposits. The sediment succession in core GN200 based on the detrital proxy interpretation demonstrates that lake-playa sedimentation in the Ejina Basin has been disrupted likely due to tectonic events in the southern part of the catchment around 1 Ma. At this time Heihe broke through from the Hexi Corridor through the Heli Shan ridge into the northern Ejina Basin. This initiated the alluvial fan progradation into the Ejina Basin. Presently the sediment bulge repels the diminishing lacustrine environment further north. In this sense, the uplift of the hinterland served as a tipping element that triggered landscape transformation in the northern Tibetan foreland (i.e. the Hexi Corridor) and further on in the adjacent northern intracontinental Ejina Basin. The onset of alluvial fan formation coincides with increased sedimentation rates on the Chinese Loess Plateau, suggesting that the Heihe alluvial fan may have served as a prominent upwind sediment source for it
