    Servant Leaders as Change Agents

    Get PDF
Servant leadership (SL) produces high performance and employee engagement. Non-SL senior leaders lacking business ethics have caused negative outcomes. This study explored the lived experiences of senior leaders’ decision-making in SL organizations. Maslow’s theories, decision theory, spirituality, Cicero’s virtue theory of ethics; SL comprised the theoretical/conceptual foundation. Data collection used purposive sampling of 18 senior leader participants in SL organizations employing Giorgi’s descriptive psychological structures of experiences analysis method. Findings confirmed ethical decision-making in SL organizations. Recommendations included examining CEO ethical leadership and firm performance interrelations and promoting ethical decision-making at all levels. Conclusions supported teamwork as the one structure of experience. Positive social change implications are an ethical capitalism that occurs by building community and SL organizations

Bayesian Image Quality Transfer with CNNs: Exploring Uncertainty in dMRI Super-Resolution

    Get PDF
In this work, we investigate the value of uncertainty modeling in 3D super-resolution with convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Deep learning has shown success in a plethora of medical image transformation problems, such as super-resolution (SR) and image synthesis. However, the highly ill-posed nature of such problems results in inevitable ambiguity in the learning of networks. We propose to account for intrinsic uncertainty through a per-patch heteroscedastic noise model and for parameter uncertainty through approximate Bayesian inference in the form of variational dropout. We show that the combined benefits of both lead to the state-of-the-art performance SR of diffusion MR brain images in terms of errors compared to ground truth. We further show that the reduced error scores produce tangible benefits in downstream tractography. In addition, the probabilistic nature of the methods naturally confers a mechanism to quantify uncertainty over the super-resolved output. We demonstrate through experiments on both healthy and pathological brains the potential utility of such an uncertainty measure in the risk assessment of the super-resolved images for subsequent clinical use.Comment: Accepted paper at MICCAI 201

Implementation gaps for asthma prevention and control

    Get PDF
Asthma and allergic diseases can start in childhood and persist throughout life, but could also be manifested later, at any time for still misunderstood reasons. They are major chronic multifactorial respiratory diseases, for which prevention, early diagnosis and treatment is recognized as a priority for the Europe's public health policy and the United Nations. Given that allergy triggers (including infections, rapid urbanization leading to loss in biodiversity, pollution and climate changes) are not expected to change in a foreseeable future, it is imperative that steps are taken to develop, strengthen and optimize preventive and treatment strategies. Currently there are good treatments for asthma, several risk factors are known (e.g., allergies, rhinitis, tobacco smoke) and tools to control the disease have been developed. However, we are still uncertain how to prevent patients from developing asthma and allergic diseases. In this paper, we list the positive and negative experiences in this field as well as analyze the missing links in the process. This critical analysis will be the basis of setting-up an effective program for prevention and making, a process labeled as "implementation gaps". (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Gallot-Tanno Theorem for closed incomplete pseudo-Riemannian manifolds and applications

We extend the Gallot-Tanno Theorem to closed pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. It is done by showing that if the cone over a manifold admits a parallel symmetric (0,2)(0,2)-tensor then it is Riemannian. Applications of this result to the existence of metrics with distinct Levi-Civita connections but having the same unparametrized geodesics and to the projective Obata conjecture are given. We also apply our result to show that the holonomy group of a closed (O(p+1,q),Sp,q)(O(p+1,q),S^{p,q})-manifold does not preserve any nondegenerate splitting of Rp+1,q\R^{p+1,q}.Comment: minor correction

Sub-registro de nascimentos vivos hospitalares em área urbana da região sul do Brasil, em 1989

    Get PDF
With a view to evaluating the real situation of the vital statistics as regards their completeness in the city of Maringá, Paraná State, Brazil, 4,876 hospital live births which occurred during 1989 were studied. The rate of under-registration was estimated as 9.1%, varying according to maternal age, parity and financial condition. The results lead to the hypothesis of an association between under registration and lower socioeconomical levels. The study also describes all the necessary steps to establish the link between the two sets of events, live birth and legal registration

Probabilidade de morrer no primeiro ano de vida em área urbana da região sul, Brasil

A birth-cohort of 4,876 children born alive in hospital were selected and followed through up to the age of one year with a view to estimating the risk of dying in the first year of life. All of them were born in 1989, in one of the the seven hospitals of an urban area of Southern Brazil and the only requirement for belonging to the cohort was that of residence on the area. The selected variables were: sex, birthweight, age at moment of death, urderlying cause of death, and maternal age. The estimated probability of dying in the first year was of 19.9 per 1,000 (77.3% of the deaths occurred during the neonatal period). Perinatal causes and congenital malformations contributed to 80% of the deaths, and infectious diseases were the underlying cause of death in only 1.1% of the losses. The risk of dying in the first year of life due to afections arising during the perinatal period was higher among vaginally delivered babies (20.3 per 1,000) than it was for those born by caesarian section (9 per 1,000). A higher probability of death was present among infants born to adolescent mothers, and those with low birthweight (less than 2,500g). The results brought out the need for improving the quality of prenatal and infant care. They also suggested the hypothesis of a possible association between higher infant mortality and lower socio-economic level.

    Energy properness and Sasakian-Einstein metrics

In this paper, we show that the existence of Sasakian-Einstein metrics is closely related to the properness of corresponding energy functionals. Under the condition that admitting no nontrivial Hamiltonian holomorphic vector field, we prove that the existence of Sasakian-Einstein metric implies a Moser-Trudinger type inequality. At the end of this paper, we also obtain a Miyaoka-Yau type inequality in Sasakian geometry.Comment: 27 page
