The Locus of Highly Accreting AGNs on the M_BH--sigma Plane: Selections, Limitations, and Implications
We re-examine the locus of narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies on the M_BH--sigma
(black hole mass--bulge velocity dispersion) plane in the light of the results
from large new optically selected samples. We find that (1) soft X-ray selected
NLS1s have a lower ratio of BH mass to \sigma^{4}_{[OIII]} than broad line
Seyfert 1 galaxies; this remains a robust statistical result contrary to recent
claims otherwise; (2) optically selected NLS1s have systematically lower
Eddington luminosity ratio compared to X-ray selected NLS1s; and (3) as a
result, the locus of NLS1s on the M_BH--sigma plane is affected by selection
effects. We argue that there is no single explanation for the origin of the
M_BH--sigma relation; instead tracks of galaxies on the M_BH--sigma plane
differ with redshift, consistent with the downsizing of AGN activity. If these
results at face value are incorrect, then the data imply that AGNs with high
Eddington accretion reside preferentially in relatively late type galaxies at
the present epoch, perhaps a more interesting result and a challenge to
theoretical models.Comment: To appear in Ap
Evaluaton of hypoglycaemic activity of Aegel marmelos alcoholic seed extract in experimental models of hyperglycemic rats
The present study aimed to investigate the antidiabetic effect of alcoholic seed extract of Aegel marmelos in comparison with glibenclamide in in vivo using alloxan rat model. The diabetic rats were orally given glibenclamide and alcoholic seed extract of Aegle marmelos for 21 days. The effects were studied in vivo. Oral administration of alcoholic seed extract of Aegle marmelos decrease the level of serum glucose, total cholesterol (TCH), triglycerides(TG), low density lipoprotein (LDLP), very low density lipoprotein(VLDLP) significantly while increasing HDL-cholesterol. Alcoholic seed extract of Aegle marmelos was also evaluated for oral glucose tolerance(OGTT) characteristics. In conclusion, alcoholic seed extract of Aegle marmelos had potential antidiabetic activity. Further it has been observed that the seed extract have positive effect on liver and kidney parenchyma
Assessing the sustainability of individual behavior change against mosquitoes after the outbreak of a vector-borne disease in Mauritius: a case study
The island of Mauritius had not experienced any mosquito-borne diseases since the last malaria outbreak in the early 1980s. When the chikungunya fever epidemic affected the island in 2005-2006, the local population was unprepared against this mosquito-borne infection and officially 11, 000 people were affected. Authorities promptly set up public health campaigns and actively encouraged the public to take preventive actions against the mosquito vector. This study has been carried out to investigate whether the individual preventive interventions adopted to combat mosquitoes during the outbreak have been sustained two years following the outbreak in a specific rural locality. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Mauritius. Data was collected using a door-to-door household survey in a small rural locality of Mauritius in December 2008 and January 2009. One person per household was interviewed and the sample size was 172. Sustainability of individual preventive interventions was determined by assessing the preventive measures adopted by people against mosquitoes prior to, during, and two years following the outbreak. Elimination of mosquito breeding places was the most practiced preventive measure adopted by people in all outbreak periods as compared to preventive measures against mosquito bites within and outside the house. An increase in all individual preventive measures was observed during the outbreak followed by a slow decline two years following the outbreak. An important finding was that all post-outbreak preventive measures were sustained above the pre-outbreak levels, especially so in the case of source reduction interventions. Individual efforts in the inter-epidemic period are important to mitigate the spread of a mosquito-borne infection and it is encouraging to observe in this case study that although individual preventive measures decline with time after an outbreak they are still being sustained above the pre-outbreak levels
Super-solar N/C in the NLS1 Galaxy Markarian 1044
Narrow-Line Seyfert 1s (NLS1s) are known to have extreme values of a number
of properties compared to Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) as a class. In
particular, previous emission-line studies have suggested that NLS1s are
unusually metal rich compared to broad-line AGN of comparable luminosity. We
present low- and medium-resolution spectroscopic observations of the NLS1
Markarian 1044 with the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrometer (STIS). We
identify two blueshifted intrinsic absorption systems at -1145 and -295 km/s
relative to the systemic velocity of the galaxy. Using a simple photoionization
model of the absorbing gas, we find that the strongest and best-measured of the
absorption systems has N/C approximately 6.96 times the solar value. We also
report on the discovery of three new Ly-alpha forest lines with neutral
Hydrogen column density log greater than 12.77 in the log. This number is
consistent with the 2.6 expected in the path length to the source redshift of
Mrk 1044.Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 21 pages including 4 figures & 5 table

Fe(III)-Chloroquine Complex: A New Potent Compound in Wellness Industries of High Antimicrobial and Antimalarial Activities
Fe(III)- Chloroquine complex has been synthesized and screened for its physicochemical, microbial as well as pharmacological activity have been done in solid and aqueous phase. On the basis of elemental analysis, polarographic studies, amperometric titration and IR spectral studies the probable formula for the complex has been determined at 25รยฑ1OC and ionic strength of รยต= 1.0[KCl]. Raper's paper disc method was used for microbial study against various pathogenic bacteria and fungi. In vivo syudy of Swiss mice [25-30gm] were used for antimalarial activity against Chloroquine and its complex on xyline-Alcoholic activity test Kidney, liver and serum of these rats were also studied. On the basis of observed result it could be concluded that Fe (III)-Chloroquine complex were found to be non-toxic and more potent than pure chloroquine drug
