Current Status of Ureteric Stents on Extraction Strings and Other Non-cystoscopic Removal Methods in the Paediatric Setting: A Systematic Review on Behalf of the European Association of Urology (EAU) Young Academic Urology (YAU) Urolithiasis Group
Ureteric stents are an important tool in urology and have a wide range of indications. While they offer a number of advantages, limitations remain despite modern advancements. These include discomfort, migration and encrustation. Standard removal is via cystoscopy but in the paediatric setting this mandates general anaesthetic, which holds disadvantages. Alternative removal methods include use of extraction strings and magnetic retrieval devices, which can be performed in the outpatient setting. This systematic review evaluates the safety and efficacy of different non-cystoscopic methods for stent removal in the paediatric setting.publishedVersio
Molecular van der Waals fluids in cavity quantum electrodynamics
Intermolecular van der Waals interactions are central to chemical and
physical phenomena ranging from biomolecule binding to soft-matter phase
transitions. However, there are currently very limited approaches to manipulate
van der Waals interactions. In this work, we demonstrate that strong
light-matter coupling can be used to tune van der Waals interactions, and,
thus, control the thermodynamic properties of many-molecule systems. Our
analysis reveals orientation-dependent intermolecular interactions between van
der Waals molecules (for example, H) that depend on the distance between
the molecules as and . Moreover, we employ non-perturbative
\textit{ab initio} cavity quantum electrodynamics calculations to develop
machine learning-based van der Waals interaction potentials for molecules
inside optical cavities. By simulating fluids of up to H
molecules, we demonstrate that strong light-matter coupling can tune the
structural and thermodynamic properties of molecular fluids. In particular, we
observe collective orientational order in many-molecule systems as a result of
cavity-modified van der Waals interactions. These simulations and analyses
demonstrate both local and collective effects induced by strong light-matter
coupling and open new paths for controlling the properties of condensed phase
systems.Comment: 6 pages and 3 figures in main text - 15 pages and 12 figures

Advances in Ureteroscopy: New technologies and current innovations in the era of Tailored Endourological Stone Treatment (TEST)
Ureteroscopy has undergone many advances in recent decades. As a result, it is able to treat an increasing range of patient groups including special populations such as pregnancy, anomalous kidneys and extremes of age. Such advances include Holmium laser, high-power systems and pulse modulation. Thulium fibre laser is a more recent introduction to clinical practice. Ureteroscopes have also been improved alongside vision and optics. This article provides an up-to-date guide to these topics as well as disposable scopes, pressure control and developments in operating planning and patient aftercare. These advances allow for a custom strategy to be applied to the individual patient in what we describe using a new term: Tailored endourological stone treatment (TEST).publishedVersio

Mortalities, amyloidosis and other diseases in free-living red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) on Jersey, Channel Islands
Between 2007 and 2014, 337 free-living red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) on Jersey, Channel Islands, were examined post mortem as part of a mortality and disease surveillance scheme. Road traffic accidents (RTAs) were attributable for 50.7 per cent (171/337) of the casualties, 34.4 per cent (116/337) succumbed to diseases including fatal exudative dermatitis (FED), 7.1 per cent (24/337) to predation, 6.5 per cent (22/337) to other trauma and 1.2 per cent (4/337) to suspected poisoning. Cat predation accounted for 5 per cent (17/337) of mortalities. Pathologies were diverse and individual animals were often identified with more than one disease process. Squirrelpox virus (SQPV) particles were not detected in selected cases examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Amyloid was identified in 19.3 per cent (65/337) of squirrels, often in conjunction with inflammatory lesions like hepatic capillariasis. A consistent cause of amyloid accumulation was not identified, although there was a significant association of amyloidosis with hepatic capillariasis and FED. In addition to RTAs, amyloidosis and FED have been identified as important causes of squirrel morbidity and mortality on Jersey, while the underlying aetiology and predisposing factors for these two disease complexes are presently unclear. Disease, fragmented woodlands, an increasingly suburban habitat, along with various anthropogenic factors, may jeopardise the long-term viability of this island red squirrel population
Effect of substrate thermal resistance on space-domain microchannel
In recent years, Fluorescent Melting Curve Analysis (FMCA) has become an almost ubiquitous feature of commercial quantitative PCR (qPCR) thermal cyclers. Here a micro-fluidic device is presented capable of performing FMCA within a microchannel. The device consists of modular thermally conductive blocks which can sandwich a microfluidic substrate. Opposing ends of the blocks are held at differing temperatures and a linear thermal gradient is generated along the microfluidic channel. Fluorescent measurements taken from a sample as it passes along the micro-fluidic channel permits fluorescent melting curves to be generated. In this study we measure DNA melting temperature from two plasmid fragments. The effects of flow velocity and ramp-rate are investigated, and measured melting curves are compared to those acquired from a commercially available PCR thermocycler
Intramuscular vaccination of Atlantic lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus L.) induces inflammatory reactions and local immunoglobulin M production at the vaccine administration site
Atlantic lumpfish were vaccinated by intramuscular (im) or intraperitoneal (ip) injection with a multivalent oil‐based vaccine, while control fish were injected with phosphate‐buffered saline. Four lumpfish per group were sampled for skin/muscle and head kidney tissue at 0, 2, 7, 21 and 42 days post‐immunization (dpi) for histopathology and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Gene expressions of secretory IgM, membrane‐bound IgM, IgD, TCRα, CD3ε and MHC class IIβ were studied in tissues by using qPCR. Im. vaccinated fish showed vaccine‐induced inflammation with formation of granulomas and increasing number of eosinophilic granulocyte‐like cells over time. On IHC sections, we observed diffuse intercellular staining of secretory IgM at the injection site at 2 dpi, while IgM + cells appeared in small numbers at 21 and 42 dpi. Skin/muscle samples from im. vaccinated fish demonstrated an increase in gene expression of IgM mRNA (secretory and membrane‐bound) at 21 and 42 dpi and small changes for other genes. Our results indicated that im. vaccination of lumpfish induced local IgM production at the vaccine injection site, with no apparent proliferation of IgM + cells. Eosinophilic granulocyte‐like cells appeared shortly after im. injection and increased in numbers as the inflammation progressed.publishedVersio
