Asymptotic Level Density of the Elastic Net Self-Organizing Feature Map
Whileas the Kohonen Self Organizing Map shows an asymptotic level density
following a power law with a magnification exponent 2/3, it would be desired to
have an exponent 1 in order to provide optimal mapping in the sense of
information theory. In this paper, we study analytically and numerically the
magnification behaviour of the Elastic Net algorithm as a model for
self-organizing feature maps. In contrast to the Kohonen map the Elastic Net
shows no power law, but for onedimensional maps nevertheless the density
follows an universal magnification law, i.e. depends on the local stimulus
density only and is independent on position and decouples from the stimulus

Investigations of the pi N total cross sections at high energies using new FESR: log nu or (log nu)^2
We propose to use rich informations on pi p total cross sections below N= 10
GeV in addition to high-energy data in order to discriminate whether these
cross sections increase like log nu or (log nu)^2 at high energies, since it is
difficult to discriminate between asymptotic log nu and (log nu)^2 fits from
high-energy data alone. A finite-energy sum rule (FESR) which is derived in the
spirit of the P' sum rule as well as the n=1 moment FESR have been required to
constrain the high-energy parameters. We then searched for the best fit of pi p
total cross sections above 70 GeV in terms of high-energy parameters
constrained by these two FESR. We can show from this analysis that the (log
nu)^2 behaviours is preferred to the log nu behaviours.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev. D 5 pages, 2 eps figure
JRC2010-36215 POLYURETHANE COATING OF RAILROAD BALLAST AGGREGATE FOR IMPROVED PERFORMANCE
ABSTRACT This paper presents preliminary findings of a new technology currently being tested in a research project at the University of Illinois. The effectiveness of elastomer polyurethane coating of ballast is evaluated for its ability to reduce aggregate breakage and resulting ballast fouling. Railroad ballast degradation and fouling related to aggregate breakdown under heavy axle loads, poor drainage, mud pumping, and water/ballast pockets are among the most commonly encountered track substructure (ballast, subballast, and subgrade soil) problems. The structural integrity of seriously fouled ballast can be compromised leading to track instability and ultimately, train derailments. Because of this serious consequence, costly ballast maintenance activities, such as undercutting, tamping, and shoulder cleaning, are routinely performed by railroads especially on tracks serving the heavy axle load unit trains. In the research project, clean AREMA No.4 aggregates along with the polyurethane coated particles were subjected to realistic field loading conditions in a large shear box test apparatus used for strength testing of ballast at full gradation. The urethane coated ballast was allowed to set for 1, 3, 7, and 14 days prior to subjecting the samples up to 10 shear passes. Shear and normal stress data were gathered during testing; and the fines generated by all tested samples were collected and analyzed. Early findings show a major increase in the shear strength gained with the polyurethane coating, a decrease in the breakdown of the coated ballast, and a decrease in particle reorientation which could lead to a reduction in ballast settlement
Experimental evidence of a fractal dissipative regime in high-T_c superconductors
We report on our experimental evidence of a substantial geometrical
ingredient characterizing the problem of incipient dissipation in high-T_c
superconductors(HTS): high-resolution studies of differential
resistance-current characteristics in absence of magnetic field enabled us to
identify and quantify the fractal dissipative regime inside which the actual
current-carrying medium is an object of fractal geometry. The discovery of a
fractal regime proves the reality and consistency of critical-phenomena
scenario as a model for dissipation in inhomogeneous and disordered HTS, gives
the experimentally-based value of the relevant finite-size scaling exponent and
offers some interesting new guidelines to the problem of pairing mechanisms in

Effect of Dopant on the Nanostructured Morphology of Poly (1-naphthylamine) Synthesized by Template Free Method
The study reports some preliminary investigations on the template free synthesis of ascantlyinvestigated polyaniline (PANI) derivative—poly (1-naphthylamine) (PNA) by template free method in presence as well as absence of hydrochloric acid (HCl) (dopant), using ferric chloride as oxidant. The polymerization was carried out in alcoholic medium. Polymerization of 1-naphthylamine (NPA) was confirmed by the FT-IR as well as UV–visible studies. The morphology and size of PNA particles was strongly influenced by the presence and absence of acid which was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies
Super Resolution Fluorescence Microscopy and Tracking of Bacterial Flotillin (Reggie) Paralogs Provide Evidence for Defined-Sized Protein Microdomains within the Bacterial Membrane but Absence of Clusters Containing Detergent-Resistant Proteins
Biological membranes have been proposed to contain microdomains of a specific lipid composition, in which distinct groups of proteins are clustered. Flotillin-like proteins are conserved between pro—and eukaryotes, play an important function in several eukaryotic and bacterial cells, and define in vertebrates a type of so-called detergent-resistant microdomains. Using STED microscopy, we show that two bacterial flotillins, FloA and FloT, form defined assemblies with an average diameter of 85 to 110 nm in the model bacterium Bacillus subtilis. Interestingly, flotillin microdomains are of similar size in eukaryotic cells. The soluble domains of FloA form higher order oligomers of up to several hundred kDa in vitro, showing that like eukaryotic flotillins, bacterial assemblies are based in part on their ability to self-oligomerize. However, B. subtilis paralogs show significantly different diffusion rates, and consequently do not colocalize into a common microdomain. Dual colour time lapse experiments of flotillins together with other detergent-resistant proteins in bacteria show that proteins colocalize for no longer than a few hundred milliseconds, and do not move together. Our data reveal that the bacterial membrane contains defined-sized protein domains rather than functional microdomains dependent on flotillins. Based on their distinct dynamics, FloA and FloT confer spatially distinguishable activities, but do not serve as molecular scaffolds
Search for the exotic Resonance in 340GeV/c -Nucleus Interactions
We report on a high statistics search for the resonance in
-nucleus collisions at 340GeV/c. No evidence for this resonance is
found in our data sample which contains 676000 candidates above
background. For the decay channel and the
kinematic range 0.150.9 we find a 3 upper limit for the
production cross section of 3.1 and 3.5 b per nucleon for reactions with

Observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay Xi_c+ -> p K- pi+
We report the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed charm baryon decay
Xi_c+ -> p K- pi+. We observe 150 +- 22 events for the signal. The data were
accumulated using the SELEX spectrometer during the 1996-1997 fixed target run
at Fermilab, chiefly from a 600 GeV/c Sigma- beam. The branching fractions of
the decay relative to the Cabibbo-favored Xi_c+ -> Sigma+ K- pi+ and Xi_c+ ->
X- pi+ pi+ are measured to be B(Xi_c+ -> p K- pi+)/B(Xi_c+ -> Sigma+ K- pi+) =
0.22 +- 0.06 +- 0.03 and B(Xi_c+ -> p K- pi+)/B(Xi_c+ -> X- pi+ pi+) = 0.20 +-

First observation of a narrow charm-strange meson DsJ(2632) -> Ds eta and D0 K+
We report the first observation of a charm-strange meson DsJ(2632) at a mass
of 2632.6+/-1.6 MeV/c^2 in data from SELEX, the charm hadro-production
experiment E781 at Fermilab. This state is seen in two decay modes, Ds eta and
D0 K+. In the Ds eta decay mode we observe an excess of 49.3 events with a
significance of 7.2sigma at a mass of 2635.9+/-2.9 MeV/c^2. There is a
corresponding peak of 14 events with a significance of 5.3sigma at 2631.5+/-1.9
MeV/c^2 in the decay mode D0 K+. The decay width of this state is <17 MeV/c^2
at 90% confidence level. The relative branching ratio Gamma(D0K+)/Gamma(Dseta)
is 0.16+/-0.06. The mechanism which keeps this state narrow is unclear. Its
decay pattern is also unusual, being dominated by the Ds eta decay mode.Comment: 5 pages, 3 included eps figures. v2 as accepted for publication by
