The 100 Lobsters Project: A Cooperative Demonstration Project For Health Assessments Of Lobsters From Rhode Island
The emergence of epizootic shell disease in the American lobster (Homarus americanus) has been devastating to the fishing industry in southern New England. In response, research was initiated to understand the roles of the environment, pathogens, and pollutants in the ecology and etiology of the disease. A comprehensive project was initiated in which tissues and hemolymph from 100 lobsters were collected from an endemic area of disease, Narragansett Bay, RI. The project has moved forward with the purpose of compiling, synthesizing, and propagating the findings from the 100 Lobsters Project. The resulting tissue bank and Web-based data repository and instructional tools serve as a nascent demonstration project to both the scientific community working on this disease as well as to members of the lobster industry
Investigation of a bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane as a phenyl replacement within an LpPLA2 inhibitor
We describe the incorporation of a bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane moiety within two known LpPLA2 inhibitors to act as bioisosteric phenyl replacements. An efficient synthesis to the target compounds was enabled with a dichlorocarbene insertion into a bicyclo[1.1.0]butane system being the key transformation. Potency, physicochemical, and X-ray crystallographic data were obtained to compare the known inhibitors to their bioisosteric counterparts, which showed the isostere was well tolerated and positively impacted on the physicochemical profile

Geriatric pharmacotherapy : optimisation through integrated approach in the hospital setting
Since older patients are more vulnerable to adverse drug-related events, there is a need to ensure appropriate prescribing in these patients in order to prevent misuse, overuse and underuse of drugs. Different tools and strategies have been developed to reduce inappropriate prescribing; the available measures can be divided into medication assessment tools, and speciïŹc interventions to reduce inappropriate prescribing. Implicit criteria of inappropriate prescribing focus on appropriate dosing, search for drug-drug interactions, and increase adherence. Explicit criteria are consensus-based standards focusing on drugs and diseases and include lists of drugs to avoid in general or lists combining drugs with clinical data. These criteria take into consideration differences between patients, and stand for a medication review, by using a systematic approach. Different types of interventions exist in order to reduce inappropriate prescribing in older patients, such as: educational interventions, computerized decision support systems, pharmacist-based interventions, and geriatric assessment. The effects of these interventions have been studied, sometimes in a multifaceted approach combining different techniques, and all types seem to have positive effects on appropriateness of prescribing. Interdisciplinary teamwork within the integrative pharmaceutical care is important for improving of outcomes and safety of drug therapy. The pharmaceutical care process consists offour steps, which are cyclic for an individual patient. These steps are pharmaceutical anamnesis, medication review, design and follow-up of a pharmaceutical care plan. A standardized approach is necessary for the adequate detection and evaluation of drug-related problems. Furthermore, it is clear that drug therapy should be reviewed in-depth, by having full access to medical records, laboratory values and nursing notes. Although clinical pharmacists perform the pharmaceutical care process to manage the patientâs drug therapy in every day clinical practice, the physician takes the ultimate responsibility for the care of the patient in close collaboration with nurses
Infrared Properties of Cataclysmic Variables from 2MASS: Results from the 2nd Incremental Data Release
Because accretion-generated luminosity dominates the radiated energy of most
cataclysmic variables, they have been ``traditionally'' observed primarily at
short wavelengths. Infrared observations of cataclysmic variables contribute to
the understanding of key system components that are expected to radiate at
these wavelengths, such as the cool outer disk, accretion stream, and secondary
star. We have compiled the J, H, and Ks photometry of all cataclysmic variables
located in the sky coverage of the 2 Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) 2nd
Incremental Data Release. This data comprises 251 systems with reliably
identified near-IR counterparts and S/N > 10 photometry in one or more of the

Understanding Urban Demand for Wild Meat in Vietnam: Implications for Conservation Actions
Vietnam is a significant consumer of wildlife, particularly wild meat, in urban restaurant settings. To meet this demand, poaching of wildlife is widespread, threatening regional and international biodiversity. Previous interventions to tackle illegal and potentially unsustainable consumption of wild meat in Vietnam have generally focused on limiting supply. While critical, they have been impeded by a lack of resources, the presence of increasingly organised criminal networks and corruption. Attention is, therefore, turning to the consumer, but a paucity of research investigating consumer demand for wild meat will impede the creation of effective consumer-centred interventions. Here we used a mixed-methods research approach comprising a hypothetical choice modelling survey and qualitative interviews to explore the drivers of wild meat consumption and consumer preferences among residents of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Our findings indicate that demand for wild meat is heterogeneous and highly context specific. Wild-sourced, rare, and expensive wild meat-types are eaten by those situated towards the top of the societal hierarchy to convey wealth and status and are commonly consumed in lucrative business contexts. Cheaper, legal and farmed substitutes for wild-sourced meats are also consumed, but typically in more casual consumption or social drinking settings. We explore the implications of our results for current conservation interventions in Vietnam that attempt to tackle illegal and potentially unsustainable trade in and consumption of wild meat and detail how our research informs future consumer-centric conservation actions
Correlations and Renormalization in Lattice Gases
A complete formulation is given of an exact kinetic theory for lattice gases.
This kinetic theory makes possible the calculation of corrections to the usual
Boltzmann / Chapman-Enskog analysis of lattice gases due to the buildup of
correlations. It is shown that renormalized transport coefficients can be
calculated perturbatively by summing terms in an infinite series. A
diagrammatic notation for the terms in this series is given, in analogy with
the diagrammatic expansions of continuum kinetic theory and quantum field
theory. A closed-form expression for the coefficients associated with the
vertices of these diagrams is given. This method is applied to several standard
lattice gases, and the results are shown to correctly predict experimentally
