New heat flow observations on the Reykjanes Ridge

Get PDF
During METEOR cruise 45 in August 1977 14 heat flow measurements were obtained along a profile east of the Reykjanes Ridge and perpendicular to the ridge axis covering a distance range from 30 to 240 km. Closely spaced measurements were grouped together. The mean heat flow of all groups amounts to 109±20 mW m-2. The values do not reveal a distinct increase with decreasing distance from the ridge axis as may be expected from the theoretical heat flow distribution based upon a cooling plate model. Including earlier measurements a high and very uniform heat flow in the distance range from 170 to 340 km was observed with a mean value of about 100 mW m-2. In order to explain this high heat flow a temperature of 930° C is required at the lower boundary of the lithosphere at a depth of 50 km, assuming a purely conductive heat transport. Compared with the results obtained from previous measurements west of the Reykjanes Ridge, the data reveal an asymmetric thermal behaviour of the ridge area. The average heat flow east of the ridge amounts to 93 mW m-2 being nearly twice the heat flow of the region west of the ridge. ARK: https://n2t.net/ark:/88439/y073309 Permalink: https://geophysicsjournal.com/article/37 &nbsp

This research was conducted at PT. Wahana Meta Riau, Pekanbaru. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of competence, work experience and job placement on organizational commitment. The study population was 75 employees and is set with models census. Research variables used are the competencies, work experience and job placement as independent variables and organizational commitment as dependent variable. Methods of data analysis using multiple linear regression analysis aided by SPSS version 21.The results of this study concluded that the variable competence, work experience, and job placement positive and significant effect on organizational commitment. In terms of competence, the company should improve the competence of employees through technical training related to the field of the employee's duties. Work experience can be enhanced by the company's employees through the implementation of tasks in accordance with the ability of employees so that employees will increasingly gain work experience. In the variable job placement for the implementation is effective and appropriate, where the company should have to look at the educational background, skills suitability, suitability of the attitude of the employees. Regarding the commitment needs to be improved is the attention of the employees of the various problems faced by the company, so that organizational goals can be achieved

The opportunities of two-phase hybrid stepping motor back EMF sampling

Get PDF
By counting the step command pulses, stepping motors can be straightforwardly used for open loop positioning. However, open-loop control is often insufficient to guarantee accurate and energy efficient movements. More intelligent stepping motor algorithms can meet these concerns, however, this requires position information. The back EMF signal contains useful information on the rotor position. This information can be used to monitor the motor condition and to implement a more advanced position control algorithm. A theoretical analysis gives insight into the back EMF generated in a two-phase hybrid stepping motor. In this paper a, by the authors, patented sampling method is considered to measure the back EMF signal. The opportunities of this method are considered theoretically. Moreover this paper presents extensive measurement results proving the opportunities of the method, to develop more intelligent stepping motor algorithms

Helicobacter suis infection alters glycosylation and decreases the pathogen growth inhibiting effect and binding avidity of gastric mucins

Get PDF
Helicobacter suis is the most prevalent non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter species in the human stomach and is associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. H. suis colonizes the gastric mucosa of 60-95% of pigs at slaughter age, and is associated with chronic gastritis, decreased weight gain, and ulcers. Here, we show that experimental H. suis infection changes the mucin composition and glycosylation, decreasing the amount of H. suis-binding glycan structures in the pig gastric mucus niche. Similarly, the H. suis-binding ability of mucins from H. pylori-infected humans is lower than that of noninfected individuals. Furthermore, the H. suis growth-inhibiting effect of mucins from both noninfected humans and pigs is replaced by a growth-enhancing effect by mucins from infected individuals/pigs. Thus, Helicobacter spp. infections impair the mucus barrier by decreasing the H. suis-binding ability of the mucins and by decreasing the antiprolific activity that mucins can have on H. suis. Inhibition of these mucus-based defenses creates a more stable and inhabitable niche for H. suis. This is likely of importance for long-term colonization and outcome of infection, and reversing these impairments may have therapeutic benefits

Basic beliefs and the perceptual learning problem: A substantial challenge for moderate foundationalism

Get PDF
In recent epistemology many philosophers have adhered to a moderate foundationalism according to which some beliefs do not depend on other beliefs for their justification. Reliance on such ‘basic beliefs’ pervades both internalist and externalist theories of justification. In this article I argue that the phenomenon of perceptual learning – the fact that certain ‘expert’ observers are able to form more justified basic beliefs than novice observers – constitutes a challenge for moderate foundationalists. In order to accommodate perceptual learning cases, the moderate foundationalist will have to characterize the ‘expertise’ of the expert observer in such a way that it cannot be had by novice observers and that it bestows justification on expert basic beliefs independently of any other justification had by the expert. I will argue that the accounts of expert basic beliefs currently present in the literature fail to meet this challenge, as they either result in a too liberal ascription of justification or fail to draw a clear distinction between expert basic beliefs and other spontaneously formed beliefs. Nevertheless, some guidelines for a future solution will be provided.Special Issue 01 (The Epistemology of Perception)</p

Yellowfin tuna production tends to decrease due to excess catching that is feared could interfere with the preservation of resources yellowfin tuna. Hence, it is necessary to do this research Catch Product of Yellowfin Tuna. Results obtained from the study are expected to give an idea of yellowfin condition in the Indian Ocean. This research was conducted in April-May 2016 at the Benoa Port. The aimed of this research was to determine condition of yellowfin tuna through the study of the length-weight relationship, condition factor, length at first capture, and asymptotic length (L∞) of yellowfin tuna in the Indian Ocean based on catches landed at the port of Benoa, Bali. This research used survey method. Data processing used the software of Microsoft Excel and FISAT II. The results have shown the size of the yellowfin tuna from April-May 2016 ranging from 70 – 178 with 112 cmFL. The equation of length weights correlation was obtained W = 0.00002*FL2,966 with isometric growth pattern. The condition factor obtained was between 1.64 to 2.44, and the size of the first caught fish is 133 cmFL. Asymptotic length (L∞) = 190.05 cmFL. Based on the size of fish caught where Lc > ½ L∞ can be stated that the size of which was caught had a decent catch
