The objective of this study was to determine meat quality characteristics, fatty acid profiles, and sensory characteristics of 50 single-birth male lambs from five breeds: Artli (n = 10), Cepni (n = 10), Hemsin (n = 10), Karayaka (n = 10), and Of (n = 10). At the beginning of the experiment, the average age and weight of the lambs were 120 +/- 5 d and 30.7 +/- 0.68 kg respectively. After 60 d of intensive fattening, the average live weight before slaughter was 40.96 kg +/- 0.76 kg. All evaluations were performed on samples from the longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) muscle. There was no difference between breeds in terms of the pH values of the hot carcasses, whereas the cold carcass pH values were higher (P<0.001) in Hemsin animals than in the other breeds. Meat chemical properties (such as organic matter; dry matter; and fat, measured as the ether extract), physical properties (such as cooking loss; drip loss; and water-holding capacity, WHC), and instrumental values (such as colour, L* and b* values, chewiness, hardness, and resilience) were significantly affected by breed differences. Additionally, the differences between breeds were found to be significant in terms of the fatty acid composition and the evaluation of organoleptic properties, such as sensory characteristics, flavour, and juiciness of cooked (boiled or roasted) meat. The results show that lamb meat's physical, chemical, and sensory properties vary by breed. The differences found in the composition and presence of meat fatty acids between and within breeds can be used as a source of variation for future genetic improvement strategies

The objective of this study was to analyze the attitudes of staff at layer hen farms operating in Afyonkarahisar province and its districts. The study was carried out with face to face interviews of staff working at 53 commercial layer hen farms to measure the cognitive, affective and behavioral dimensions of attitudes regarding animal welfare with a total of 118 survey forms which were evaluated. The sample group of the study consisted of the owners or administrators of poultry farms as well as veterinarians, agricultural engineers and other staff responsible for the care and administration of laying hens at these farms. It has been determined that a major proportion of the participants from the layer hen farms were male (87,29%) and under the age of 40 years old (64,4%). It was determined that 72,88% of the staff were graduates of secondary school and college and 63,56% of them had 17 years or less of work experience. Information on the cognitive dimension of attitudes of participants towards animal welfare has shown that knowledge in terms of animal welfare is inadequate. The results for the affective and behavioral dimensions indicate that the attitudes of staff regarding animal welfare are influenced by cultural, moral and social cults as well as beliefs and sustains a more utilitarian content

The purpose of this study was to examine the following research questions in Turkish coaching context: a) How do coaches perceive sport science research? b) Which sources do coaches utilize when obtaining the knowledge they need? c) What obstacles do coaches confront when trying to access the knowledge they need? Participants were 322 coaches (256 men, 66 women) from diverse sports and coaching levels working in Ankara. “New Ideas for Coaches” questionnaire by Reade, Rodgers and Hall (2008) was translated and adapted into Turkish for the current study. There was a strong concurrence between Turkish coaches in terms of the belief that sport science contributes to sport (%78). Gaps exist, however, between what coaches were looking for and the research that is being conducted. Coaches were most likely to attend seminars or consult other coaches to get new information. Scientific publications were ranked very low by the coaches. The barriers to the coaches’ access to sport science were finding out the source of information, being able to implement the knowledge that was obtained from sport sciences into field of coaching, lack of monetary support for the expenses about obtaining knowledge, and language barrier respectively. Coaches’ demographic characteristics influenced their perceptions of and preferences for obtaining new information. Strategies to remove the barriers could include providing further education opportunities for coaches and eligible scientific knowledge sources to ensure successful knowledge transfer.M.S. - Master of Scienc

The purposes of this study were to 1) identify coaches’ needs by evaluating athletes’ developmental outcomes, 2) design, implement, and evaluate a learning community program (LCP) for the coaches based on the needs identified, and 3) evaluate the long-term effects of the LCP on the coaches’ views and practices. A mixed methods research design was used to answer the research questions. In Study 1, an adapted and validated form of a measurement toolkit that measures youth athletes’ “Competence”, “Confidence”, “Connection”, and “Character” was applied to 45 youth gymnasts. The gymnasts were from Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bolu, Mersin, and Bartın cities of Turkey. Data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings indicated a decrease in gymnasts’ perceptions in each of the developmental outcome as they age. Also, girls had significantly higher scores in “Competence” and “Character” outcomes (p < 0.05). A six-week LCP was developed based on the findings of Study 1. A LCP was conducted with six coaches and one facilitator. The data comprised video-recorded and fully transcribed six-week LCP, researcher notes, and a focus-group interview. In understanding the long-term effects of the LCP, a long-term participant observation was made and unstructured interviews were conducted with two participant coaches after two years. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The coaches found the LCP quite effective regarding the learning environment created, and the way the knowledge is built and shared. Additionally, the program strongly raised the coaches’ awareness and knowledge of athletes’ holistic developmental outcomes. Findings regarding the long-term effects of the LCP indicated the coaches’ actual adoption of the view of holistic athlete development and started to make positive changes in gymnasts’ developmental outcomes using the professional knowledge they obtained.Ph.D. - Doctoral Progra
