    Analysis of the ψ ( 3770 ) resonance in line with unitarity and analyticity constraints

    We study the inclusive and exclusive cross sections of e+e-→hadrons for center-of-mass energies between 3.70 and 3.83GeV to infer the mass, width, and couplings of the ψ(3770) resonance. By using a coupled-channel K-matrix approach, we setup our analysis to respect unitarity and the analyticity properties of the underlying scattering amplitudes. We fit several models to the full dataset and identify our nominal results through a statistical model comparison. We find that, accounting for the interplay between the ψ(2S) and the ψ(3770), no further pole is required to describe the ψ(3770) line shape. In particular we derive from the pole location Mψ(3770)=3778.8±0.3MeV and Γψ(3770)=25.0±0.5MeV. Moreover, we find the decay to D+D- and D0D¯0 to be consistent with isospin symmetry and derive an upper bound on the branching ratio B(ψ(3770)→non-DD¯)<6% at 90% probability

    Applicability of condensation particle counters to measure atmospheric clusters

    This study presents an evaluation of a pulse height condensation particle counter (PH-CPC) and an expansion condensation particle counter (E-CPC) in terms of measuring ambient and laboratory-generated molecular and ion clusters. Ambient molecular cluster concentrations were measured with both instruments as they were deployed in conjunction with an ion spectrometer and other aerosol instruments in Hyytiälä, Finland at the SMEAR II station between 1 March and 30 June 2007. The observed cluster concentrations varied and ranged from some thousands to 100 000 cm -3. Both instruments showed similar (within a factor of ~5) concentrations. An average size of the detected clusters was approximately 1.8 nm. As the atmospheric measurement of sub 2-nm particles and molecular clusters is a challenging task, we conclude that most likely we were unable to detect the smallest clusters. Nevertheless, the reported concentrations are the best estimates to date for minimum cluster concentrations in a boreal forest environment

    Amines are potentially important for atmospheric new particle formation, but their concentrations are usually low with typical mixing ratios in the pptv range or even smaller. Therefore, the demand for highly sensitive gas-phase amine measurements has emerged in the last several years. Nitrate chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) is routinely used for the measurement of gas-phase sulfuric acid in the sub-pptv range. Furthermore, extremely low volatile organic compounds (ELVOCs) can be detected with a nitrate CIMS. In this study we demonstrate that a nitrate CIMS can also be used for the sensitive measurement of dimethylamine (DMA, (CH3)2NH) using the NO3−•(HNO3)1 − 2• (DMA) cluster ion signal. Calibration measurements were made at the CLOUD chamber during two different measurement campaigns. Good linearity between 0 and  ∼  120 pptv of DMA as well as a sub-pptv detection limit of 0.7 pptv for a 10 min integration time are demonstrated at 278 K and 38 % RH

    Characterization of aerosol particles produced by a skyscraper demolition by blasting

    We present a study characterizing aerosol particles resulting from a skyscraper blasting. High mass concentrations with a maximum of 844.9 μg m-3 were present for a short time period of approximately 15 minutes. They result in a day mean of 32.6 μg m-3 compared to a 27.6 μg m-3 background not exceeding the 50 μg m-3 EU maximum permissive value. The increase in particle number concentration was less pronounced with a maximum concentration of 6.9 ⋅ 104 cm-3 compared to the local background value of 1.8 ⋅ 104 cm-3. The size-resolved number concentration shows a single mode of ultrafine particles at approximately 93 nm. The spatial distribution of deposited dust was investigated with Bergerhoff glass collection vessels, showing a decrease with distance. In the deposited dust samples the concentrations of twelve metals was determined, non of them exceeded the regional background concentrations significantly. The chemical composition of individual particles emitted by the demolition was studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy. They were mainly concrete and steel particles, with 60% calcium carbonates, 19% calcium sulfates, 19% silicates and 2% steel. In energy-dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy, no fibers like asbestos were observed.     Patterns of cervical lymph node metastasis in supraglottic laryngeal cancer and therapeutic implications of surgical staging of the neck

    Purpose!#!Accurate therapeutic management of the neck is a challenge in patients with supraglottic laryngeal cancer. Nodal metastasis is common at all disease stages, and treatment planning relies on clinical staging of the neck, for both surgical and non-surgical treatment. Here, we compared clinical and surgical staging results in supraglottic carcinoma patients treated with primary surgery to assess the accuracy of pre-therapeutic clinical staging and guide future treatment decisions.!##!Methods!#!Retrospective analysis of clinical, pathological, and oncologic outcome data of 70 patients treated with primary surgery and bilateral neck dissection for supraglottic laryngeal cancer. Patients where clinical and pathological neck staging results differed, were identified and analyzed in detail.!##!Results!#!On pathologic assessment, patients with early stage (pT1/2) primaries showed cervical lymph node metastases in 55% (n = 17/31) of cases, compared to 67% (n = 26/39) of patients with pT3/4 tumors. In 24% (n = 17/70) of all patients, cN status differed from pN status, resulting in an upstaging in 16% of cases (n = 11/70) and a downstaging in 9% (n = 6/70) of cases. 14% of patients with cN0 status had occult metastases (n = 5/30). As assessed by a retrospective tumor board, in case of a non-surgical treatment approach, the inaccurate clinical staging of the neck would have led to an over- or undertreatment of the neck in 20% (n = 14/70) of all patients.!##!Conclusion!#!Our data re-emphasize the high cervical metastasis rates of supraglottic laryngeal cancer across all stages. Inaccurate clinical staging of the neck is common and should be taken into consideration when planning treatment
