The Internal Anticipation of Sensory Action Effects: When Action Induces FFA and PPA Activity

Voluntary action – in particular the ability to produce desired effects in the environment – is fundamental to human existence. According to ideomotor theory we can achieve goals in the environment by means of anticipating their outcomes. We aimed at providing neurophysiological evidence for the assumption that performing actions calls for the activation of brain areas associated with the sensory effects usually evoked by the actions. We conducted an fMRI study in which right and left button presses lead to the presentation of face and house pictures. We compared a baseline phase with the same phase after participants experienced the association between button presses and pictures. We found an increase in the parahippocampal place area (PPA) for the response that has been associated with house pictures and fusiform face area (FFA) for the response that has been coupled with face pictures. Morbus Crohn

Der M. Crohn ist noch immer eine kausal unheilbare Erkrankung und befällt potenziell den gesamten Magen-Darm-Trakt. Die primäre Therapie der chronisch-entzündlichen Darmerkrankungen ist konservativ und die Indikation zur Operation sollte heutzutage unbedingt interdisziplinär gestellt werden. Bei M. Crohn werden ausschließlich Komplikationen operiert, die interventionell oder medikamentös nicht therapierbar sind. Im Gegensatz zur Colitis ulcerosa ist bei M. Crohn eine komplette Entfernung des Krankheitssubstrates nicht möglich. Trotz der Weiterentwicklung der medikamentösen Therapie und eines mittlerweile signifikant späteren OP-Zeitpunktes wird jedoch weiterhin bei einem Großteil der Patienten mit M. Crohn im Laufe des Lebens eine chirurgische Intervention notwendig. Die intensivierte medikamentöse – immunsupprimierende oder immunmodulierende – Therapie birgt einerseits ein erhöhtes Risiko von Neoplasien und hat andererseits auch das chirurgische Management bei Patienten mit chronisch-entzündlichen Darmerkrankungen (CED) verändert. Im vorliegenden Habilitationsprojekt wurden die Auswirkungen einer intensivierten medikamentösen Therapie, Mechanismen der malignen Entartung sowie Prädiktoren für die Notwendigkeit einer chirurgischen Intervention und chirurgische Komplikationen untersucht. Des Weiteren wurde u.a. der Stellenwert von für Patienten mit M. Crohn möglicherweise wichtigen klinischen Tests (Gastrografin-Test, Wasserhalteversuch) untersucht

Die Präsidentschaftswahl in Afghanistan hat verdeutlicht, dass Wahlen allein noch kein Ausdruck für eine demokratische Konsolidierung sind. Unregelmäßigkeiten wie etwa präparierte Wahlurnen, "Phantomwähler" und massive Bedrohung von Wahlwilligen, für einen bestimmten Kandidaten zu stimmen, entwerteten das Ergebnis und damit auch jeden auf ihm fußenden Versuch einer Regierungsbildung. Enhancement of and interference among higher order multipole transitions in molecules near a plasmonic nanoantenna

Spontaneous emission of quantum emitters can be modified by engineering their optical environment. This allows a resonant nanoantenna to significantly modify the radiative properties of a quantum emitter. In this article, we go beyond the common electric dipole approximation for the molecular electronic transition and take light-matter coupling through higher order multipoles into account. We investigate, by means of theory and numerical simulations, a strong enhancement of the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole emission channels of a molecule adjacent to a plasmonic patch nanoantenna. While this on its own had been considered, the assumption in prior work usually has been that each molecular transition is dominated only by one of those multipolar emission channels. This leads naturally to the notion of discussing the modified emission in terms of a modified local density of states defined for each specific multipolar transition. In reality, this restricts the applicability of the approach, since specific molecular transitions occur via multiple multipolar pathways that have to be considered all at once. Here, we introduce a framework to study interference effects between higher order transitions in molecules by (a) a rigorous quantum-chemical calculation of their multipolar moments and (b) by a consecutive investigation of the transition rate upon coupling to an arbitrarily shaped nanoantenna. Based on that formalism we predict interference effects between these transition channels. This allows for a strong suppression of radiation by exploiting destructive interference. Our work suggests that placing a suitably chosen molecule at a well defined position and at a well defined orientation relative to a nanoantenna can fully suppress the transition probability.Comment: 30 pages, 8 figure

Retrospektive Analyse der Therapie des Morbus Crohn mit dem TNF-α Antikörper Infliximab

In einer retrospektiven Analyse sollte die Effektivität und Verträglichkeit von Infliximab in der Therapie des Morbus Crohn (MC) über einen Zeitraum von mehreren Jahren dargestellt werden. 48 Patienten mit MC erhielten im Zeitraum von 1999 - 2007 insgesamt 446 Infusionen mit dem TNF-α-Antikörper Infliximab in der Abteilung für Gastroenterologie der Universität Rostock. Die Analyse zeigte höhere Remissionsraten mit Infliximab im Krankheitsverlauf des MC als dies von den großen klinischen Studien her bekannt ist. Eine hohe Rate an Nebenwirkungen muss bei der Patientenaufklärung bedacht werden

A reference specimen for compaction tests of fiber reinforcements

Compaction behavior of textiles has a major influence on the outcome of various manufacturing processes for fiber reinforced polymer composites. Nevertheless, no standard exists up to date which specifies test methods or test rigs. A recent international benchmark revealed high variation associated with the result data. This work is a very first step towards a reference specimen, allowing for an isolated view on variations attributed to the test rig mechanics. A specimen design is proposed, intended to show compaction characteristics similar to technical textiles in terms of transverse compaction pressure and corresponding displacement. The reference specimen was tested in a round-robin study comprising test rigs at four different European research institutions. While reproducibility of the compaction behavior on each of the test rigs was high, clear variations between the results gained with different test rigs were observed

Electroweak corrections to W-boson pair production at the LHC

Vector-boson pair production ranks among the most important Standard-Model benchmark processes at the LHC, not only in view of on-going Higgs analyses. These processes may also help to gain a deeper understanding of the electroweak interaction in general, and to test the validity of the Standard Model at highest energies. In this work, the first calculation of the full one-loop electroweak corrections to on-shell W-boson pair production at hadron colliders is presented. We discuss the impact of the corrections on the total cross section as well as on relevant differential distributions. We observe that corrections due to photon-induced channels can be amazingly large at energies accessible at the LHC, while radiation of additional massive vector bosons does not influence the results significantly.Comment: 29 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables; some references and comments on \gamma\gamma -> WW added; matches version published in JHE
