    Optimizing Anti-icing Operation for Winter Roadway Treatment Using A Decision-Making Tool

    Managing winter roadway treatment can be a challenge where winter is not severe, but snowfall is experienced a few times a year. Winter weather makes the road dangerous and challenging to travel. Most US states have approached and implemented different winter road maintenance practices to make transportation of goods, services, and people uninterrupted. However, the state of Georgia has always struggled to deal with winter weather. Recently, there has been some progress. The Georgia Department of Transportation prepared a winter road treatment plan in 2019, and they are still working on improving it. Increasing emphasis on pre-treating the road rather than relying heavily on snow plowing and other post-treatment is the current trend in winter road maintenance. Pre-treatment reduces chemical use and has several other benefits. In this research, a pre-treatment requirement model was developed to calculate the amount of brine required to melt different snow and ice amounts. In the last three years, Georgia faced a few snow events; three were selected for analysis using the developed model. The study revealed that adjusting the pre-treatment amount at smaller snow events can eliminate the need for post-treatment. The model suggests that different parts of a route require different amounts of pre-treatment. The application of the brine amount can be adjusted based on snow accumulation prediction by the model. The model sensitivity analysis showed that more snow is accumulated at lower temperatures, and the effectiveness of brine in melting snow diminishes. Higher wind speed increases snowmelt resulting in lowered brine application requirements. The decision-making tool can optimize the amount of brine used by suggesting location and pre-treatment amount. The output of the model can be used in better decision making on winter road pre-treatment

    To Study the Clinical Efficacy and Safety of Remdesivir in Hospitalized Adult Patients with Moderate-to-Severe COVID-19 Disease in ICU of a Tertiary Center in Bihar

    Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has adversely affected the human health and wealth across the globe and is still posing a serious challenge to us. In the armamentarium of various drugs approved for COVID-19, remdesivir proved to be a major breakthrough in the treatment of moderate-to-severe cases. Our study is regarding its clinical efficacy and safety in hospitalized reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) confirmed adult patients with moderate-to-severe COVID-19 disease. Material and methods: A total of 100 patients with moderate-to-severe COVID-19 (RT-PCR positive) admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), Muzaffarpur, Bihar, were enrolled in the study from 12th August to 11th November, 2020. All patients were given injection remdesivir as 200 mg IV loading dose on Day 1, followed by 100 mg IV daily for next 4 days along with other standard treatment. Results: Out of total 100 patients, 88 patients recovered and were discharged, while 12 patients died. Mean age of patients was 54 ± 16 years with male preponderance (4:1). Mean duration of hospital stay was 10.6 ± 5.4 days. C-reactive protein, D-dimer, ferritin and interleukin-6 decreased significantly after treatment with remdesivir, with p value <0.01, as compared to values at the time of admission, without any significant side effects. Conclusion: Early administration of remdesivir helps contribute to better clinical outcome in moderate-to-severe COVID-19 disease, without any significant side effects

    Effect of growth regulators and stages of spray on seed yield and seed quality parameters of ridge gourd [Luffa acutangula (Roxb) L.]

    The experiment was undertaken to study the influence of different growth regulators on seed yield and seed quality parameters in ridge gourd [Luffa acutangula (Roxb) L.]. There were 30 treatment combinations comprising of two factors; plant growth stage as main plot treatment, and plant growth regulators as sub plot treatment embedded in a split plot design. The results indicated that significantly the highest average fruit weight (32.76 g), matured fruit yield per plant (65.84 g), 100 seed weight (13.41 g) and seed yield per plant (12.79 g) was recorded with spraying of 500 ppm ethereal, whereas significantly the maximum fruit length (20.89 cm) and fruit diameter (5.15 cm) with 25 ppm GA3. Significantly the highest seed germination (69.22 %) was recorded with spraying of 250 ppm ethereal, while application of NAA at 50 ppm recorded significantly the highest vigour index I (2737.85) and vigour index II (5029.33). Spraying of PGR at two to four leaf stage recorded the higher fruit length (20.19 cm), fruit yield per plant (47.49 g), 100 seed weight (13.18 g) and seed yield per plant (11.98 g) as well as highest germination (60.90%), vigour index I (2460.80) and vigour index II (4377.66). It is concluded that spraying of 500 ppm etherel at two to four leaf stage increased the higher fruit length, fruit yield per plant, 100 seed weight and seed yield per plant as well as highest germination, vigour index I and vigour index II

    Going Beyond Operations with Enterprise Systems

    Enterprise Systems have become the preferred type of IT systems in most large organizations in the last few decades. These, large-scale, integrated, packaged software suites have been shown to enable operational efficiency by several prior studies .This paper reviews a number of such studies and identifies a gap in the literature. The primary contribution of this paper is that it proposes that Enterprise Systems can create business value, in addition to operational efficiency, by achieving innovation (in product, process and alliance) and enabling better strategic decision making in the adopting firms. The paper also provides empirical evidence using detailed secondary data that supports this proposition. In addition, this study also provides additional evidence for concepts identified in earlier research. This paper reports on the first study of a research-in-progress and this model will be tested further through extensive primary case studie

    Proactive cloud service assurance framework for fault remediation in cloud environment

    Cloud resiliency is an important issue in successful implementation of cloud computing systems. Handling cloud faults proactively, with a suitable remediation technique having minimum cost is an important requirement for a fault management system. The selection of best applicable remediation technique is a decision making problem and considers parameters such as i) Impact of remediation technique ii) Overhead of remediation technique ii) Severity of fault and iv) Priority of the application. This manuscript proposes an analytical model to measure the effectiveness of a remediation technique for various categories of faults, further it demonstrates the implementation of an efficient fault remediation system using a rule-based expert system. The expert system is designed to compute an utility value for each remediation technique in a novel way and select the best remediation technique from its knowledgebase. A prototype is developed for experimentation purpose and the results shows improved availability with less overhead as compared to a reactive fault management system

    Carbamazepine induced Stevens Johnson Syndrome: a case report from a tertiary care hospital

    Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a rare but life-threatening skin disease and Carbamazepine is considered as one of the most common cause. The reported frequency of serious Carbamazepine hypersensitivity reaction is between 1/1000 and 1/10000 new exposures to the drug. Here, we report a case of a 40 year old female patient, who developed multiple ulcerative lesions all over the body three days after starting treatment with Carbamazepine for Trigeminal Neuralgia. (Worldwide Unique Number- 2017-58502 and AMC Report Number- BJGMC-Pune/Nov-2017/BBG-1860) Stevens Johnson Syndrome was diagnosed. Carbamazepine was withdrawn, and the patient was treated with topical and intravenous antibiotics. A biopsy was done which confirmed the diagnosis of Stevens Johnson Syndrome
