Asymptotic stability of the Cauchy and Jensen functional equations
The aim of this note is to investigate the asymptotic stability behaviour of
the Cauchy and Jensen functional equations. Our main results show that if these
equations hold for large arguments with small error, then they are also valid
everywhere with a new error term which is a constant multiple of the original
error term. As consequences, we also obtain results of hyperstability character
for these two functional equations
Experiencing the world with archetypal symbols: A new form of aesthetics.
According to the theories of symbolic interactionism, phenomenology of perception and archetypes, we argue that symbols play the key role in translating the information from the physical world to the human experience, and archetypes are the universal knowledge of cognition that generates the background of human experience (the life-world). Therefore, we propose a conceptual framework that depicts how people experience the world with symbols, and how archetypes relate the deepest level of human experience. This framework indicates a new direction of research on memory and emotion, and also suggests that archetypal symbolism can be a new resource of aesthetic experience design.Postprint (published version
Fabrication of FeSe1-x superconducting films with bulk properties
We have fabricated high-quality FeSe1-x superconducting films with a bulk Tc
of 11-12 K on different substrates, Al2O3(0001), SrTiO3(100), MgO(100), and
LaAlO3(100), by using a pulsed laser deposition technique. All the films were
grown at a high substrate temperature of 610 oC, and were preferentially
oriented along the (101) direction, the latter being to be a key to fabricating
of FeSe1-x superconducting thin films with high Tc. According to the energy
dispersive spectroscopy data, the Fe:Se composition ratio was 1:0.90+-0.02. The
FeSe1-x film grown on a SrTiO3 substrate showed the best quality with a high
upper critical magnetic field [Hc2(0)] of 56 T
Big, Fast Vortices in the d-RVB theory of High Temperature Superconductivity
The effect of proximity to a Mott insulating phase on the superflow
properties of a d-wave superconductor is studied using the slave boson-U(1)
gauge theory model. The model has two limits corresponding to superconductivity
emerging either out of a 'renormalized fermi liquid' or out of a
non-fermi-liquid regime. Three crucial physical parameters are identified: the
size of the vortex \textit{as determined from the supercurrent it induces;} the
coupling of the superflow to the quasiparticles and the 'nondissipative time
derivative' term. As the Mott phase is approached, the core size as defined
from the supercurrent diverges, the coupling between superflow and
quasiparticles vanishes, and the magnitude of the nondissipative time
derivative dramatically increases. The dissipation due to a moving vortex is
found to vary as the third power of the doping. The upper critical field and
the size of the critical regime in which paraconductivity may be observed are
estimated, and found to be controlled by the supercurrent length scale
Numerical Test of Disk Trial Wave function for Half-Filled Landau Level
The analyticity of the lowest Landau level wave functions and the relation
between filling factor and the total angular momentum severely limits the
possible forms of trial wave functions of a disk of electrons subject to a
strong perpendicular magnetic field. For N, the number of electrons, up to 12
we have tested these disk trial wave functions for the half filled Landau level
using Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization methods. The agreement between the
results for the occupation numbers and ground state energies obtained from
these two methods is excellent. We have also compared the profile of the
occupation number near the edge with that obtained from a field-theoretical
method. The results give qualitatively identical edge profiles. Experimental

Normal Cones and Thompson Metric
The aim of this paper is to study the basic properties of the Thompson metric
in the general case of a real linear space ordered by a cone . We
show that has monotonicity properties which make it compatible with the
linear structure. We also prove several convexity properties of and some
results concerning the topology of , including a brief study of the
-convergence of monotone sequences. It is shown most of the results are
true without any assumption of an Archimedean-type property for . One
considers various completeness properties and one studies the relations between
them. Since is defined in the context of a generic ordered linear space,
with no need of an underlying topological structure, one expects to express its
completeness in terms of properties of the ordering, with respect to the linear
structure. This is done in this paper and, to the best of our knowledge, this
has not been done yet. The Thompson metric and order-unit (semi)norms
are strongly related and share important properties, as both are
defined in terms of the ordered linear structure. Although and
are only topological (and not metrical) equivalent on , we
prove that the completeness is a common feature. One proves the completeness of
the Thompson metric on a sequentially complete normal cone in a locally convex
space. At the end of the paper, it is shown that, in the case of a Banach
space, the normality of the cone is also necessary for the completeness of the

The HERMES Dual-Radiator Ring Imaging Cerenkov Detector
The construction and use of a dual radiator Ring Imaging Cerenkov(RICH)
detector is described. This instrument was developed for the HERMES experiment
at DESY which emphasizes measurements of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic
scattering. It provides particle identification for pions, kaons, and protons
in the momentum range from 2 to 15 GeV, which is essential to these studies.
The instrument uses two radiators, C4F10, a heavy fluorocarbon gas, and a wall
of silica aerogel tiles. The use of aerogel in a RICH detector has only
recently become possible with the development of clear, large homogeneous and
hydrophobic aerogel. A lightweight mirror was constructed using a newly
perfected technique to make resin-coated carbon-fiber surfaces of optical
quality. The photon detector consists of 1934 photomultiplier tubes for each
detector half, held in a soft steel matrix to provide shielding against the
residual field of the main spectrometer magnet.Comment: 25 pages, 23 figure
Search for sterile neutrino oscillation using RENO and NEOS data
We present a reactor model independent search for sterile neutrino
oscillation using 2\,509\,days of RENO near detector data and 180 days of NEOS
data. The reactor related systematic uncertainties are significantly suppressed
as both detectors are located at the same reactor complex of Hanbit Nuclear
Power Plant. The search is performed by electron
antineutrino\,() disappearance between six reactors and two
detectors with baselines of 294\,m\,(RENO) and 24\,m\,(NEOS). A spectral
comparison of the NEOS prompt-energy spectrum with a no-oscillation prediction
from the RENO measurement can explore reactor oscillations
to sterile neutrino. Based on the comparison, we obtain a 95\% C.L. excluded
region of \,eV. We also obtain a 68\% C.L. allowed
region with the best fit of \,eV and
=0.080.03 with a p-value of 8.2\%. Comparisons of
obtained reactor antineutrino spectra at reactor sources are made among RENO,
NEOS, and Daya Bay to find a possible spectral variation.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures: This manuscript has been significantly revised by
