Intra-parenchymal brainstem haemorrhage secondary to iatrogenic needle injury after a parenteral injection in a cat

Case summary A 6-month-old female domestic shorthair cat was presented with acute onset non-ambulatory right hemiparesis and horizontal nystagmus following an injection attempt in the neck, during which the cat did not cooperate. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a well-defined intra-axial lesion on the right side of the myelencephalon. The lesion was T2-weighted hypointense and T1-weighted hypointense to isointense to grey matter, non-contrast enhancing, with perilesional oedema and signal void on T2*-weighted images. A linear hyperintense lesion in the muscles of the right dorsolateral aspect of the neck on short tau inversion recovery images was also observed. These MRI findings were consistent with iatrogenic brainstem haemorrhage and a muscle needle tract. The cat made a good recovery with just mild residual neurological deficits 6 weeks after the injury. Relevance and novel information To our knowledge, this is the first report of an iatrogenic brainstem needle injury in a cat and the first report of a central nervous system iatrogenic trauma after a parenteral injection. Care should be taken with neck parenteral injections, especially in the cranial cervical area

Scoping Job Enlargement with the Cultural Dimension of Individualism: An Industrial

Job satisfaction and sustainable job performance require managers to find the right balance between job enlargement and the division of labor in designing the optimum scope of work toward a continuum of employee engagement. This dissertation explores the cultural dimension of “Individualism” and its’ implication in this balance. If a manufacturing line is transferred from the United States (91 mean individualism score) to China (20 mean individualism score) does the scope of the work need to change to ensure that a greater population of workers is engaged and that they have work passion toward sustained performance (Hofstede, n.d.)? Does the statement of work need to increase in detail and prescriptiveness or conversely in autonomy and diversity of tasks to match the mean cultural dimension of individualism corresponding with the target culture of the workforce? This study builds on the theory of job enlargement, and considers a cultural implication of individualism in international business

Gestion de la collection photographique des HUG: mise en valeur et pérennisation

Ce travail de Bachelor a été réalisé dans le cadre du mandat émis par les HUG en vue d’établir des règles de gestion pour leurs différents fonds photographiques documentaires servant à illustrer leurs diverses documentations (l’imagerie médicale n’est pas traitée dans le contexte du présent travail). Les HUG possèdent une collection photo historique, sous forme analogique, ainsi qu’une collection plus récente sous forme numérique, dans lesquelles il est ardu de repérer les images souhaitées. L’objectif de ce mandat est d’établir des règles claires pour que ces fonds puissent être exploités de manière pérenne. Les principales étapes pour réaliser ce travail ont été : • L’analyse de l’existant en vue de faire un état des lieux des pratiques documentaires des photographies, tant du côté des archives centrales où sont conservées les photos historiques que de celui de la direction de la communication où sont utilisées l’ensemble des images ; • L’étude de la littérature professionnelle, dans le but de cerner l’ensemble des points à considérer lors de la création de règles de gestion ; • L’envoi d’un questionnaire pour obtenir des solutions appliquées concrètement dans d’autres institutions en charge de fonds photographiques ; • La comparaison entre les recommandations théoriques et les applications professionnelles récoltées afin de déterminer les règles applicables aux HUG au vu de l’analyse effectuée ; • La création de livrables – inventaires, protocoles de versement, règles de catalogage, fichiers de contrôle-qualité – pour satisfaire les exigences de mes mandantes ; • La mise à l’épreuve des livrables créés, avec le traitement de trois échantillons, pour ajuster lesdits documents au plus près de la réalité. En réalisant ce mandat, l’importance de ne pas délaisser les fonds photographiques au sein d’une institution a été révélée : si aucune mesure préventive n’est prise, il y a alors de grands risques que ces informations soient perdues dans l’avenir et qu’elles ne puissent pas être réutilisées. La fragilité des supports analogiques qui se détériorent au fil du temps a pu être constatée, d’où la nécessité de prendre le temps de les inventorier et les conditionner correctement. En outre, les photographies numériques représentent d’autres préoccupations, telles que leur format et éventuelle migration, leurs métadonnées à inscrire (où, quand, par qui), leur archivage électronique, etc. Des recommandations sont faites dans le présent document pour réaliser le traitement documentaire des collections – analogique et numérique

Computer-assisted radiographic calculation of spinal curvature in brachycephalic "screw-Tailed" dog breeds with congenital thoracic vertebral malformations: reliability and clinical evaluation

The objectives of this study were: To investigate computer-assisted digital radiographic measurement of Cobb angles in dogs with congenital thoracic vertebral malformations, to determine its intra- and inter-observer reliability and its association with the presence of neurological deficits. Medical records were reviewed (2009–2013) to identify brachycephalic screw-tailed dog breeds with radiographic studies of the thoracic vertebral column and with at least one vertebral malformation present. Twenty-eight dogs were included in the study. The end vertebrae were defined as the cranial end plate of the vertebra cranial to the malformed vertebra and the caudal end plate of the vertebra caudal to the malformed vertebra. Three observers performed the measurements twice. Intraclass correlation coefficients were used to calculate the intra- and inter-observer reliabilities. The intraclass correlation coefficient was excellent for all intra- and inter-observer measurements using this method. There was a significant difference in the kyphotic Cobb angle between dogs with and without associated neurological deficits. The majority of dogs with neurological deficits had a kyphotic Cobb angle higher than 35°. No significant difference in the scoliotic Cobb angle was observed. We concluded that the computer assisted digital radiographic measurement of the Cobb angle for kyphosis and scoliosis is a valid, reproducible and reliable method to quantify the degree of spinal curvature in brachycephalic screw-tailed dog breeds with congenital thoracic vertebral malformations

Optimal learning in optimal contexts : the role of self-determination in education.

This literature review provides an overview of education studies that have been guided by selfdetermination theory (SDT). First, the authors examine studies that have assessed motivation based on SDT. Second, the authors detail research that has focussed on the linkages between motivation types and students’ behavioural, affective, and cognitive outcomes. Third, the authors present studies on how learning contexts (parents, teachers) contribute to students’ motivational resources. The authors conclude that the motivation types proposed by SDT are important for understanding how students thrive and succeed at school. The authors also highlight the significant role played by teachers and parents in the development of student motivation. The authors conclude with a summary of the benefits of selfmotivation for learning and offer some recommendations for the field.Le présent article procure une vue d'ensemble des études sur l'éducation qui ont été guidées par la théorie de l'autodétermination. En premier lieu, nous examinons les études qui ont évalué la motivation fondée sur la théorie de l'autodétermination. Nous expliquons ensuite la recherche portant sur les liens existant entre les types de motivation et les résultats des étudiants en matière de comportement et de composantes affectives et cognitives. Nous présentons aussi les études sur les contextes d'apprentissage (parents, enseignants) qui contribuent aux ressources motivationnelles des êtudiants. Nous en déduisons que les types de motivation proposés par la théorie de l'autodétermination permettent de comprendre les éléments qui permettent aux étudiants de se démarquer et de réussir en milieu scolaire. Nous mettons aussi en relief le rôle important que jouent les enseignants et les parents dans le développement de la motivation de l'éudiant. En conclusion, nous présentons un résumé des bienfaits de l'automotivation dans le cadre de l'apprentissage et offrons quelques recommandations pertinentes au domaine en question

Inferring sparse Gaussian graphical models with latent structure

Our concern is selecting the concentration matrix's nonzero coefficients for a sparse Gaussian graphical model in a high-dimensional setting. This corresponds to estimating the graph of conditional dependencies between the variables. We describe a novel framework taking into account a latent structure on the concentration matrix. This latent structure is used to drive a penalty matrix and thus to recover a graphical model with a constrained topology. Our method uses an $\ell_1$ penalized likelihood criterion. Inference of the graph of conditional dependencies between the variates and of the hidden variables is performed simultaneously in an iterative \textsc{em}-like algorithm. The performances of our method is illustrated on synthetic as well as real data, the latter concerning breast cancer.Comment: 35 pages, 15 figure
