    Akustische Signale als Werbemittel im Hörfunk

    Der Einsatz von Musik und akustischen Elementen in der Markenkommunikation ist bei weitem nicht neu. Die Begriffe Audio Branding oder akustische MarkenfĂŒhrung waren zwar lange Zeit noch nicht definiert, wurden allerdings schon hĂ€ufig eingesetzt. Die vorliegende Arbeit verfolgt das Ziel, die Effekte der akustischen MarkenfĂŒhrung und im speziellen die Effekte von Audio-Logos auf Wiedererkennung und Emotionalisierung zu untersuchen um somit die kommunikationswissenschaftliche Diskussion um den strategischen Einsatz von akustischen Signalen auszuweiten. Eingangs befasst sich diese Arbeit mit der Beschreibung des Objektbereiches durch Aufarbeitung der Fachliteratur zu den Themen Hörfunk, Werbung- und Markenkommuni-kation, akustische MarkenfĂŒhrung und Radio als Massenmedium im Werbemarkt. Der theoretische Rahmen wird durch das Beschreiben der menschlichen Wahrnehmung und Emotionen sowie einen kurzen Einblick in bereits vorhandene emotionale Kommunikationstheorien gebildet. In einer zweiteiligen empirischen Untersuchung wird anschließend zuerst anhand von drei qualitativen Experteninterviews ein Einblick in die Praxis gewonnen. Die Ergebnisse der Experteninterviews und die jeweiligen Erkenntnisse aus der Fachliteratur bilden die Basis fĂŒr eine qualitative Befragung. Diese Befragung richtet sich anhand eines Fragebogens an Hörer von Hitradio Ö3, da diese die werberelevante Zielgruppe im Hörfunk fĂŒr diese Arbeit bestmöglich abbilden. Die Ergebnisse der qualitativen Befragung werden im Anschluss statistisch ausgewertet und grafisch dargestellt. FĂŒnf aktuelle und ausgewĂ€hlte Audio-Logos werden auf diese Weise auf ihre Wiedererkennbarkeit, ihren emotionalen Inhalt und auf viele weitere Aspekte ĂŒberprĂŒft. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit können Ausgangspunkt fĂŒr einen vertiefenden kommunikations-wissenschaftlichen Diskurs zum Thema akustische MarkenfĂŒhrung sein

    The N-terminal domain of TWINKLE contributes to single-stranded DNA binding and DNA helicase activities

    The TWINKLE protein is a hexameric DNA helicase required for replication of mitochondrial DNA. TWINKLE displays striking sequence similarity to the bacteriophage T7 gene 4 protein (gp4), which is a bi-functional primase-helicase required at the phage DNA replication fork. The N-terminal domain of human TWINKLE contains some of the characteristic sequence motifs found in the N-terminal primase domain of the T7 gp4, but other important motifs are missing. TWINKLE is not an active primase in vitro and the functional role of the N-terminal region has remained elusive. In this report, we demonstrate that the N-terminal part of TWINKLE is required for efficient binding to single-stranded DNA. Truncations of this region reduce DNA helicase activity and mitochondrial DNA replisome processivity. We also find that the gp4 and TWINKLE are functionally distinct. In contrast to the phage protein, TWINKLE binds to double-stranded DNA. Moreover, TWINKLE forms stable hexamers even in the absence of Mg2+ or NTPs, which suggests that an accessory protein, a helicase loader, is needed for loading of TWINKLE onto the circular mtDNA genome

    Forestomach pH in hunted roe deer ( Capreolus capreolus ) in relation to forestomach region, time of measurement and supplemental feeding and comparison among wild ruminant species

    There is a debate whether supplemental feeding of deer bears the risk of inducing health problems, in particular acidosis. Here, the pH values of forestomach contents of free-ranging roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) shot in areas with and without supplemental winter feeding were compared. pH was similar in the dorsal and ventral rumen, but lower at these sites than in the Atrium ruminis, where it was again lower than in the reticulum; this pattern corresponds to expectations based on differences in the presence of saliva at the different sites of the forestomach. pH was lower with increasing time that elapsed between death of the animal and measuring pH in unsupplemented animals and was lower in unsupplemented animals in May/June than later in the year. Animals with supplemental winter feeding had significantly lower rumen pH (5.5) than animals without food supplementation (5.7). These data suggest that supplemental feeding of roe deer has the potential to lower forestomach pH. Although pH values measured in supplemented animals in this study would be considered indicative of rumen acidosis in domestic cattle, they are within the range previously measured in various free-ranging Odocoilid species, including roe deer; were of a similar magnitude as the May/June values of unsupplemented roe deer in this study; and must be considered with respect to potentially rapid declines in pH between death of the animal and pH measurement. Given methodological problems, analyses of literature data from free-ranging wild ruminants provide little evidence for a systematic variation of rumen pH with feeding type and body mass, but lead to the hypothesis that some New World cervids, including the roe deer, might either naturally have lower pH values than other ruminants or rumen contents whose pH drops rapidly after deat

    Global Multimodal News Frames on Climate Change: A Comparison of Five Democracies around the World

    This paper presents the first fully integrated analysis of multimodal news frames. A standardized content analysis of text and images in newspaper articles from Brazil, Germany, India, South Africa, and the United States covering the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conferences 2010–2013 was conducted using a subset of photo-illustrated articles (n = 432) as well as the entire conference coverage (n = 1,311). In the photo-illustrated articles, four overarching multimodal frames were identified: global warming victims, civil society demands, political negotiations, and sustainable energy frames. The distribution of these global frames across the five countries is relatively similar, and a comparison of frames emerging from the national subsets also reveals a strong element of cross-national frame convergence. This is explained by the news production context at global staged political events, which features uniform media access rules and similar information supplies, as well as strong interaction between journalists from different countries and between journalists and other actors. Event-related frame convergence across vastly different contexts is interpreted as one mechanism by which truly transnational media debate can be facilitated that can potentially serve to legitimize global political decisions. In conclusion, perspectives for future qualitative and quantitative multimodal framing research are discussed

    Modulation of microbial predator-prey dynamics by phosphorus availability: Growth patterns and survival strategies of bacterial phylogenetic clades

    We simultaneously studied the impact of top-down (protistan grazing) and bottom-up (phosphorus availability) factors on the numbers and biomasses of bacteria from various phylogenetic lineages, and on their growth and activity parameters in the oligo-mesotrophic Piburger See, Austria. Enhanced grazing resulted in decreased proportions of bacteria with high nucleic acid content (high-NA bacteria) and lower detection rates by FISH. There was a change in the composition of the bacterial assemblage, whereby Betaproteobacteria were heavily grazed while Alphaproteobacteria and Cytophaga—Flavobacterium—Bacteroides were less affected by predators. Changes in bacterial assemblage composition were also apparent in the treatments enriched with phosphorus, and even more pronounced in the incubations in dialysis tubes (allowing relatively free nutrient exchange). Here, Betaproteobacteria became dominant and appeared to act as successful opportunistic competitors for nutrients. In contrast, Actinobacteria did not respond to surplus phosphorus by population growth, and, moreover, maintained their small size, which resulted in a very low biomass contribution. In addition, significant relationships between high-NA bacteria and several bacterial phylogenetic clades were found, indicating an enhanced activity status.     Langfristige Wirkungen von Service-Learning-Seminaren fokussieren die Autor*innen in ihrem Forschungsbeitrag. In dieser Studie wurden Personen befragt, die zwischen 2003 und 2007 an Service-Learning-Seminaren an der UniversitÀt Mannheim teilgenommen haben und in diesem Rahmen an Grund- oder Hauptschulen tÀtig waren. Anhand einer qualitativen Studie wurden Effekte des Service-Learnings in Hinblick auf berufliche Selbstwirksamkeit, Theorie-Praxis-Reflexion und Civic Attitudes analysiert.     Wingless-related integration site (WNT) signaling is activated during the inflammatory response upon cardiac surgery: A translational study

    ObjectiveCardiac surgery and the use of cardiopulmonary bypass initiate a systemic inflammatory response. Wingless-related integration site (WNT) signaling is part of the innate immunity and has been attributed a major role in the regulation of inflammation. In preclinical research, WNT-5a may sustain an inflammatory response and cause endothelial dysfunction. Our aim was to investigate WNT signaling after cardiac surgery and its association with postoperative inflammation (Clinicaltrials.gov, NCT04058496).MethodsIn this prospective, single-center, observational study, 64 consecutive patients for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) ± valve surgery were assigned into three groups: off-pump CABG (n = 28), on-pump CABG (n = 16) and combined valve-CABG surgery (n = 20). Blood samples were acquired before surgery, at intensive care unit (ICU) admission and 4, 8, and 48 h thereafter. Plasma concentrations of WNT-5a and its antagonists Secreted frizzled-related protein 1 (sFRP-1), Secreted frizzled-related protein 5 (sFRP-5), and WNT inhibitory factor 1 (WIF-1) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In addition, plasma concentrations of six inflammatory cytokines were measured by multiplex immunoassay. Parameters were analyzed for evolution of plasma concentration over time, interactions, intergroup differences, and association with clinical outcome parameters.ResultsAt baseline, WNT-5a, sFRP-1, and WIF-1 were present in a minimal concentration, while sFRP-5 was elevated. A higher baseline value of WNT-5a, sFRP-5, and WIF-1 resulted in higher subsequent values of the respective parameter. At ICU admission, WNT-5a and sFRP-5 reached their maximum and minimum value, respectively. WIF-1 decreased over time and was lowest 8 h after surgery. sFRP-1 changed minimally over time. While WNT-5a returned to the baseline within 48 h, sFRP-5 and WIF-1 did not reach their baseline value at 48 h. Of the investigated WNT system components, only WIF-1 partially reflected the severity of surgery. WNT-5a and WIF-1 had an impact on postoperative fluid balance and noradrenaline requirement.ConclusionWNT-5a, sFRP-5, and WIF-1 are part of the systemic inflammatory response after cardiac surgery. WNT-5a peaks immediately after cardiac surgery and returns to baseline within 48 h, presumably modulated by its antagonist sFRP-5. Based on this translational study, WNT-5a antagonism may be further investigated to assess potentially beneficial effects in patients with a dysregulated inflammation after cardiac surgery

    Mycobacterium microti Infections in Free-Ranging Red Deer (Cervus elaphus)

    Infections with Mycobacterium microti, a member of the M. tuberculosis complex, have been increasingly reported in humans and in domestic and free-ranging wild animals. At postmortem examination, infected animals may display histopathologic lesions indistinguishable from those caused by M. bovis or M. caprae, potentially leading to misidentification of bovine tuberculosis. We report 3 cases of M. microti infections in free-ranging red deer (Cervus elaphus) from western Austria and southern Germany. One diseased animal displayed severe pyogranulomatous pleuropneumonia and multifocal granulomas on the surface of the pericardium. Two other animals showed alterations of the lungs and associated lymph nodes compatible with parasitic infestation. Results of the phylogenetic analysis including multiple animal strains from the study area showed independent infection events, but no host-adapted genotype. Personnel involved in bovine tuberculosis–monitoring programs should be aware of the fastidious nature of M. microti, its pathogenicity in wildlife, and zoonotic potential
