Synergism of microorganisms and seaweed extract on vegetative growth, yield and quality of cucumber fruit
Natural biostimulants, such as microorganisms and seaweed extracts, are used in agriculture to improve crop yields with a sustainable approach. However, the interaction effects between different biostimulants have not been thoroughly investigated. The objective of this work was to evaluate the synergistic effects of microorganisms (Glomus intraradices and Azospirillum brasilense) and seaweed extract (Ascophyllum nodosum and Macrocytis pyrifera) on growth, yield and fruit quality of cucumber plants under soilless cultivation. Two doses of microorganisms (0 and 10 spores mL-1 + 106 CFU) and four concentrations of seaweed extract (0, 250, 500 and 2500 ppm) were evaluated. The experimental design used was a randomized complete block design with a factorial arrangement (2 x 4), with four replications per treatment. The results showed that the equatorial diameter of the fruit, yield and titratable acidity improve when applying microorganisms and seaweed extract in combination; however, when applying the two biostimulants the values of plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, root length, biomass (fresh and dry), firmness, total soluble solids, vitamin C, chlorophyll (a and total) and indices of color (L* and b*) did not exceed those obtained when the biostimulants were applied individually. The combined application of microorganisms and seaweed extract improves cucumber yield, but not vegetative growth and, except for titratable acidity, fruit quality attributes

Community-engaged Research in Practice: Staffing Cooperative of the Los Angeles (LA) Garment Worker Center
This community-engaged research is grounded in the experiences of Los Angeles (LA) garment workers. Therefore, we affirm the principle that workers should be actively involved in shaping their own working conditions. The purpose of this research, then, is to situate a Garment Worker Center (GWC) staffing cooperative (or staffing coop) in the LA garment industry to further advance workers’ rights and leverage their skills and expertise, by conducting an initial customer exploration. Doing so allows the GWC’s staffing cooperative to pursue a business model that is competitive and feasible in the LA garment industry
Mechanical properties and fire-resistance of composites with marble particles
The main aim of this work is to manufacture a composite material based on a natural material (marble) with acceptable mechanical properties and fire resistance, for being used in habitat industry as floor or wall in buildings. Marble used as raw material is the waste powder of quarry or plate manufacturing. To achieve this objective, polyester matrix composites with 50 wt.% of marble and 3 wt.% of glass fiber (short fiber or mesh) were prepared. The novelty of this study is the high percentage of ceramic material added to a polymer matrix composite and the fire resistance study. Samples were characterized mechanically through flexural test, Charpy impact test, compression test and wear resistance by pin-on-disk test. Fracture surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and wear tracks were studied by SEM and 3D optical profilometer. Besides, samples were subjected to fire test using a Bunsen burner at 900 °C for 20 min. Sample temperature at the opposite-to-fire test side was measured with an infrared thermometer. Results show that marble improves mechanical properties of polyester and the effect of the glass fiber depends on its morphology (fiber or mesh). Fire resistance is high, and the fire goes out when the flame is turned off. Furthermore, the mesh maintains the integrity of the sample. This research received funding from the SUDOE project SOE1/P1/E307

Class IB-Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase (PI3K) Deficiency Ameliorates IA-PI3K-Induced Systemic Lupus but Not T Cell Invasion
Abstract
Class I PI3K catalyzes formation of 3-poly-phosphoinositides. The family is divided into IA isoforms, activated by Tyr kinases and the IB isoform (PI3Kγ), activated by G protein-coupled receptors. Mutations that affect PI3K are implicated in chronic inflammation, although the differential contribution of each isoform to pathology has not been elucidated. Enhanced activation of class IA-PI3K in T cells extends CD4+ memory cell survival, triggering an invasive lymphoproliferative disorder and systemic lupus. As both IA- and IB-PI3K isoforms regulate T cell activation, and activated pathogenic CD4+ memory cells are involved in triggering systemic lupus, we examined whether deletion of IB could reduce the pathological consequences of increased IA-PI3K activity. IB-PI3Kγ deficiency did not abolish invasion or lymphoproliferation, but reduced CD4+ memory cell survival, autoantibody production, glomerulonephritis, and systemic lupus. Deletion of the IB-PI3Kγ isoform thus decreased survival of pathogenic CD4+ memory cells, selectively inhibiting systemic lupus development. These results validate the PI3Kγ isoform as a target for systemic lupus erythematosus treatment
Cacao Pod Husk Flour as an Ingredient for Reformulating Frankfurters: Effects on Quality Properties
The cocoa pod husk is considered a source of dietary fiber with a high content of water-soluble pectins, bioactive compounds which should be viewed as a by-product with the potential to be incorporated into food. This study aimed to investigate the effect of adding different cocoa pod husk flour (CPHF) levels as a starch replacement for reformulating frankfurters. Results showed that the addition of 1.5 and 3.0% pod husk proportionally increased the frankfurter's fiber content by 0.49 ± 0.08 and 0.96 ± 0.19 g/100 g, which is acceptable for a product that does not contain fiber. Textural properties and sensory characteristics were affected when substituting the starch with CPHF, either totally or partially, although these samples had higher water content, hardness, and adhesiveness while springiness decreased. Non-adverse effects of nitrite on polyphenolic compounds content were evidenced in samples enriched with CPHF. The incorporation of CPHF did not significantly affect the color parameters (DeltaE < 3). Finally, the panelists indicated a sensation of the unsalted sausage, suggesting that CPHF may have natural mucoadhesion properties. In conclusion, in formulated meat products such as sausages, plant co-products such as cacao pod husks could be a valid new ingredient to improve technological parameters, functional characteristics, and stability
