    Advanced g-mps-pmma bone cements: Influence of graphene silanisation on fatigue performance, thermal properties and biocompatibility

    The incorporation of well-dispersed graphene (G) powder to polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA) bone cement has been demonstrated as a promising solution to improving its mechanicalperformance. However, two crucial aspects limit the effectiveness of G as a reinforcing agent: (1)the poor dispersion and (2) the lack of strong interfacial bonds between G and the matrix of thebone cement. This work reports a successful functionalisation route to promote the homogenousdispersion of G via silanisation using 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy silane (MPS). Furthermore,the effects of the silanisation on the mechanical, thermal and biocompatibility properties of bonecements are presented. In comparison with unsilanised G, the incorporation of silanised G (G_MPS1and G_MPS2) increased the bending strength by 17%, bending modulus by 15% and deflection atfailure by 17%. The most impressive results were obtained for the mechanical properties underfatigue loading, where the incorporation of G_MPS doubled the Fatigue Performance Index (I) valueof unsilanised G-bone cement—meaning a 900% increase over the I value of the cement without G.Additionally, to ensure that the silanisation did not have a negative influence on other fundamentalproperties of bone cement, it was demonstrated that the thermal properties and biocompatibilitywere not negatively impacted—allowing its potential clinical progression

The objectives for this work are: 1) to study the effect of different ratios of ethanol/water on the hydrolysis time for a 1% bis-sulfur silane solution at pH 6, by attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy. The different solutions studied correspond to different ratios of silane/ethanol/water by volume. The study was done following appearance of the siloxane and silanol groups and the disappearance of the ethoxysilane groups. 2) Also studied was the adhesion and corrosion behaviour of bis-sulfur silane (bis[3-(bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]disulfide, DS) in solutions of ethanol/water at pH 4 and 6 and γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) coatings obtained by a two-step process on galvanized steel samples. This coated surface was analysed by reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-RA), scanning electron miscroscopy (SEM), and polarization curves. Results obtained at pH 6 were compared with the ones for pH 4. Single lap shear tests were used to contrast the behaviour of anaerobic adhesives on electrogalvanized steel silanized samples. It was observed that higher hydrolysis time was necessary to get good adhesion behaviour if the solution was prepared at pH 4, while at pH 6 the best behaviour was observed for short hydrolysis times

    Distinct p21 requirements for regulating normal and self-reactive T cells through IFN-γ production.

    Self/non-self discrimination characterizes immunity and allows responses against pathogens but not self-antigens. Understanding the principles that govern this process is essential for designing autoimmunity treatments. p21 is thought to attenuate autoreactivity by limiting T cell expansion. Here, we provide direct evidence for a p21 role in controlling autoimmune T cell autoreactivity without affecting normal T cellresponses. We studied C57BL/6, C57BL/6/lpr and MRL/lpr mice overexpressing p21 in T cells, and showed reduced autoreactivity and lymphadenopathy in C57BL/6/lpr, and reduced mortality in MRL/lpr mice. p21 inhibited effector/memory CD4(+) CD8(+) and CD4(-)CD8(-) lpr T cell accumulation without altering defective lpr apoptosis. This was mediated by a previously non-described p21 function in limiting T cell overactivation and overproduction of IFN-γ, a key lupus cytokine. p21 did not affect normal T cell responses, revealing differential p21 requirements for autoreactive and normal T cell activity regulation.     The state of pediatric asthma in Chicago's Humboldt Park: a community-based study in two local elementary schools

    Abstract Background Pediatric asthma is a serious public health problem in Chicago and has been designated a high priority concern by residents of Chicago's Humboldt Park, a diverse community area with a large number of Puerto Rican, African American, and Mexican American families. Methods In May 2009, following the principles of community-based participatory research, a cross-sectional asthma screening survey was administered to adult caregivers of children attending two Humboldt Park elementary schools. Data were analyzed to determine the prevalence of diagnosed and probable asthma as well as the degree of asthma control among affected children; associations between asthma outcomes and mutable triggers were evaluated. Results Surveys from 494 children were evaluated. Physician-diagnosed asthma was reported for 24.9% of children and probable asthma identified in an additional 16.2% of children. Asthma was poorly or moderately controlled in 60.0% of diagnosed children. Smoking occurred inside 25.0% of households and 75.0% of caregivers reported idling of vehicles in their community. Report of general stress among caregivers, stress due to community crime, and/or an inability to cope with everyday life were significantly and positively associated with poor asthma morbidity and control among affected children. Conclusions Despite high prevalence rates and poor asthma morbidity and control in Humboldt Park, the association of these measures with mutable variables is promising.     Recomendaciones de manipulación doméstica de frutas y hortalizas para preservar su valor nutritivo

    The health benefits of daily consumption of at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables are well documented. The World Health Organization (WHO) public health goal, established in 600 grams per person/day, is not achieved in Spain, so it is important to improve access to these foods, maintain their potential nutritive value and overcome barriers for their consumption. The objectives of this paper are: facilitate responsible decision-making regarding health; maximize the nutritional value of fruit and vegetables, help overcome barriers for fruit and vegetables consumption and report on how their storage at home, their handling and cooking affect to nutritional value of fruit and vegetables.In order to minimize nutrients loss and improve their bioavailability during fruit and vegetables handling, the Association for the promotion of fruit and vegetables “5 a day” (Spain) recommends: avoid prolonged storage of fruit and vegetables in the fridge; use layers and outer leaves; peel and/or cut them just before consumption; wash the whole pieces and then chop them; controlling the soaking time of cut pieces; prefer cooking techniques that do not require direct contact with water; a shorter cooking time, less loss of nutrients; the correct frying retains nutrients very well, although it is a technique of which should not be abused; add a few drops of vinegar or lemon juice to the cooking water if it does not change the taste and dish acceptance; use the water of cooking to elaborate other foods (e.g. sauces, soups, purees, etc.) except those coming from chard, spinach or beets. The “5 a day” Association (Spain) recommends increasing consumption of fruit and vegetables, and state that theloss of nutrients during their home handling should not be understood as a barrier for their consumption.El beneficio para la salud del consumo diario de al menos 5 raciones entre frutas y hortalizas está bien documentado. Los objetivos de este documento son: facilitar la toma de decisiones responsables con la salud; aprovechar al máximo el valor nutritivo de frutas y hortalizas; ayudar a salvar las barreras para su consumo e informar sobre cómo afecta la conservación, manipulación y cocinado domésticos a su valor nutritivo.Para minimizar la pérdida de nutrientes y mejorar su biodisponibilidad durante la manipulación de frutas y hortalizas, la Asociación para la promoción del consumo de frutas y hortalizas “5 al día” (España) recomienda: evitar almacenamientos prolongados en el refrigerador; aprovechar las capas y hojas exteriores; pelar y/o cortar el alimento justo antes de consumirlo; lavar las piezas enteras y trocearlas posteriormente; controlar el tiempo de remojo de las piezas cortadas; preferir técnicas de cocinado que no requieran contacto directo con el agua; a menor tiempo de cocción, menor pérdida de nutrientes; la fritura correcta conserva muy bien los nutrientes, aunque no debe abusarse de esta técnica; añadir un chorrito de vinagre o de zumo de limón al agua de cocción; aprovechar el agua de los vegetales cocidos para elaborar otros alimentos (ej.: salsas, sopas, purés, etc.), excepto la de acelgas, espinacas o remolacha. La Asociación “5 al día” recomienda aumentar el consumo de frutas y hortalizas, y considera que la pérdida de nutrientes durante su manipulación doméstica no debe entenderse como una barrera para su consumo

    El objetivo principal del proyecto “Physico-chemical, biological and geological study of an underwater volcano in a degassing stage: Island of El Hierro”, (VULCANO-II) es estudiar, desde un punto de vista totalmente interdisciplinar, la fase de desgasificación activa del único volcán submarino monitoreado desde su nacimiento en aguas españolas. De esta forma, se pretende además, dar continuidad a los estudios multidisciplinares realizados sobre el volcán submarino de la isla de El Hierro en el contexto del proyecto del Plan Nacional VULCANO-I, (CTM2012-36317) y VULCANA (Vulcanología Canaria Submarina, IEO).     Calculation of half-lives of proteins in vivo. Heterogeneity in the rate of degradation of yeast proteins

    A method is given for the calculation of half-lives of proteins in vivo from the measurement of the decrease of radioactivity in pulse-labelled proteins with time. This method could be particularly useful for the study of the degradation of proteins in cells that have a low growth rate. The method applied to growing yeast indicates that there are two major classes of protein. The class with low turnover constitutes the bulk of yeast protein and has a half-life of 160 h in a medium with glucose or galactose and of 50 h in a medium with ethanol. The class of proteins with high turnover (half-life between 0.8 and 2.4 hours) represents from 1% of total protein in yeast growing on glucose to 7% in yeast growing on ethanol. It is shown that some proteins which are derepressed during growth on ethanol or induced during growth on galactose are particularly susceptible to degradation in a medium which contains glucose. It is proposed that protein degradation is regulated by a coarse control at the level of protease activity and a fine control on the susceptibility of individual proteins to proteases.This work was supported by a grant from the Comisión Asesora para la Investigación Científica y Técnica.
