    A Simple Way to Produce Gold Nanoshells for Cancer Therapy

    Gold nanoshells (GNSs), formed by a silica core surrounded by a gold shell, present a shift on their surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to the near-infrared (NIR) part of the electromagnetic spectrum when synthesized with specific dimensions. This chapter presents a simple method to prepare the nanoshells, a step-by-step characterization, as well as their absorbance spectrum. For the synthesis, silica spheres, with approximately 190 ± 5 nm in diameter, were prepared using the Stöber method and then functionalized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The gold nanoparticles (GNPs), with a diameter of 7 ± 3 nm, were produced by the reduction of chloroauric acid. Then, the silica was seeded with the GNPs to later grow a gold shell with the help of Au(OH)4¯ ions and formaldehyde. UV-Vis spectroscopy results showed an increase of absorbance starting at 520 nm. It reached its maximum around 600 nm and kept absorbing all through 1200 nm. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images suggest that the absorption peak movement coincided with the completion of the shell. Furthermore, when the sample was irradiated with an 820 nm wavelength/3.1 mW laser, its temperatures increased by 6.3°C in 2 min, showing its absorbance in the NIR

    miRNAs as radio-response biomarkers for breast cancer stem cells

    In breast cancer (BC), the presence of cancer stem cells (CSCs) has been related to relapse, metastasis, and radioresistance. Radiotherapy (RT) is an extended BC treatment, but is not always effective. CSCs have several mechanisms of radioresistance in place, and some miRNAs are involved in the cellular response to ionizing radiation (IR). Here, we studied how IR affects the expression of miRNAs related to stemness in different molecular BC subtypes. Exposition of BC cells to radiation doses of 2, 4, or 6 Gy affected their phenotype, functional characteristics, pluripotency gene expression, and in vivo tumorigenic capacity. This held true for various molecular subtypes of BC cells (classified by ER, PR and HER-2 status), and for BC cells either plated in monolayer, or being in suspension as mammospheres. However, the effect of IR on the expression of eight stemness- and radioresistance-related miRNAs (miR-210, miR-10b, miR-182, miR-142, miR-221, miR-21, miR-93, miR-15b) varied, depending on cell line subpopulation and clinicopathological features of BC patients. Therefore, clinicopathological features and, potentially also, chemotherapy regimen should be both taken into consideration, for determining a potential miRNA signature by liquid biopsy in BC patients treated with RT.     Real Time QRS Detection Based on M-ary Likelihood Ratio Test on the DFT Coefficients

    This paper shows an adaptive statistical test for QRS detection of electrocardiography (ECG) signals. The method is based on a M-ary generalized likelihood ratio test (LRT) defined over a multiple observation window in the Fourier domain. The motivations for proposing another detection algorithm based on maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation are found in the high complexity of the signal model proposed in previous approaches which i) makes them computationally unfeasible or not intended for real time applications such as intensive care monitoring and (ii) in which the parameter selection conditions the overall performance. In this sense, we propose an alternative model based on the independent Gaussian properties of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) coefficients, which allows to define a simplified MAP probability function. In addition, the proposed approach defines an adaptive MAP statistical test in which a global hypothesis is defined on particular hypotheses of the multiple observation window.     Para conocer la historia de un país, también es indispensable conocer como han estado conformadas sus ciudades y cómo ha sido su recorrido a través del tiempo para tener una perspectiva mucho más amplia de su economía durante cada coyuntura. Es por esto, que la Historia Económica de Risaralda busca poner a disposición y resaltar una visión bastante amplia de su recorrido histórico y económico, partiendo desde los primeros habitantes y estructuras económicas del territorio, datadas desde tiempo precoloniales, y atravesando por las diferentes transformaciones que fueron afectando a Risaralda durante la colonia y en los años posteriores a esta, especialmente con acontecimientos como la colonización antioqueña, que dejó arraigada la actividad agrícola como la más importante de la economía departamental, aunque la misma con el pasar de los años en el siglo XX fue perdiendo importancia a causa del auge manufacturero, y especialmente del auge de la terciarización sustentada en la actividad comercial. Este fenómeno de terciarización económica será considerado de forma tanto histórica como actual, identificando cual es la situación económica vigente de Risaralda, y a partir de ello darse una idea de lo que le puede deparar al territorio en los próximos años, donde los objetivos de sostenibilidad y calidad de vida parecen ser las claves de toda iniciativa

    Development of a Hip Joint Socket by Finite-Element-Based Analysis for Mechanical Assessment

    This article evaluates a hip joint socket design by finite element method (FEM). The study was based on the needs and characteristics of a patient with an oncological amputation; however, the solution and the presented method may be generalized for patients with similar conditions. The research aimed to solve a generalized problem, taking a typical case from the study area as a reference. Data were collected on the use of the current improving prosthesis—specifically in interaction with its socket—to obtain information on the new approach design: this step constituted the work’s starting point, where the problems to be solved in conventional designs were revealed. Currently, the development of this type of support does not consider the functionality and comfort of the patient. Research has reported that 58% of patients with sockets have rejected their use, because they do not fit comfortably and functionally; therefore, patients’ low acceptance or rejection of the use of the prosthesis socket has been documented. In this study, different designs were evaluated, based on the FEM as scientific support for the results obtained, for the development of a new ergonomic fit with a 60% increase in patient compliance, that had correct gait performance when correcting postures, improved fit–user interaction, and that presented an esthetic fit that met the usability factor. The validation of the results was carried out through the physical construction of the prototype. The research showed how the finite element method improved the design, analyzing the structural behavioral, and that it could reduce cost and time instead of generating several prototypes

    Effect of Methyl Jasmonate Doped Nanoparticles on Nitrogen Composition of Monastrell Grapes and Wines

    Nitrogen composition on grapevines has a direct effect on the quality of wines since it contributes to develop certain volatile compounds and assists in the correct kinetics of alcoholic fermentation. Several strategies can be used to ensure nitrogen content in grapes and one of them could be the use of elicitors such as methyl jasmonate. The use of this elicitor has been proven to be efficient in the production of secondary metabolites which increases the quality of wines, but its use also has some drawbacks such as its low water solubility, high volatility, and its expensive cost. This study observes the impact on the amino acid and ammonium composition of must and wine of Monastrell grapes that have been treated with methyl jasmonate (MeJ) and methyl jasmonate n-doped calcium phosphate nanoparticles (MeJ-ACP). The first objective of this study was to compare the effect of these treatments to determine if the nitrogenous composition of the berries and wines increased. The second aim was to determine if the nanoparticle treatments showed similar effects to conventional treatments so that the ones which are more efficient and sustainable from an agricultural point of view can be selected. The results showed how both treatments increased amino acid composition in grapes and wines during two consecutive seasons and as well as the use of MeJ-ACP showed better results compared to MeJ despite using less quantity (1 mM compared to 10 mM typically).
