    RURAL SURGERY TRAINING PROGRAMS IN THE UNITED STATES: A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE Abstract: Rural surgery training programs have been developed to train general surgeons for community and rural service. There are 10 rural surgery training programs in the United States. Rural surgery training began in 1974 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin to prepare general surgery residents for rural service. There is a national shortage of general surgeons which translates into a deficit of surgeons in rural areas. The terms “general surgeon” and “rural surgeon” are not synonymous as rural surgery is more extensive, more broad-based and more subspecialty with more trauma, burn care and wound care and far more endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures. There are many advantages to rural general surgery training programs. A well-trained rural surgeon with OB/GYN experience can handle 66% of all inpatient operations in a rural hospital. Rural surgery programs have been developed to address the above problems and attract graduating general surgeons to communities and rural areas. These programs have had high general surgery practice and high rural placement. Selection of appropriate campus, hospital and attending staff is critical for the educational experience to be maximal. Attending surgeons need to be general surgeons, rural surgeons and subspecialty surgeons. The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has developed the Advisory Council for Rural Surgery (ACRS). The ACRS has developed a repository of rural training experiences and training sites. There are five different types of training experience ranging from rotations to dedicated tracks to fellowships. Rural surgery training programs are a mechanism to attract more medical students to general surgery residencies, more graduating chief general surgery residents to private practice in community and rural areas, improve the case numbers and confidence of graduating surgery residents, and improve the quality of surgical care in this country

    Intertwining Relations for the Deformed D1D5 CFT

    The Higgs branch of the D1D5 system flows in the infrared to a two-dimensional N=(4,4) SCFT. This system is believed to have an "orbifold point" in its moduli space where the SCFT is a free sigma model with target space the symmetric product of copies of four-tori; however, at the orbifold point gravity is strongly coupled and to reach the supergravity point one needs to turn on the four exactly marginal deformations corresponding to the blow-up modes of the orbifold SCFT. Recently, technology has been developed for studying these deformations and perturbing the D1D5 CFT off its orbifold point. We present a new method for computing the general effect of a single application of the deformation operators. The method takes the form of intertwining relations that map operators in the untwisted sector before application of the deformation operator to operators in the 2-twisted sector after the application of the deformation operator. This method is computationally more direct, and may be of theoretical interest. This line of inquiry should ultimately have relevance for black hole physics.Comment: latex, 23 pages, 3 figure

    Genetic Polymorphisms of the Glucocorticoid Receptor and Interleulin-8 Receptor Genes and their Relationship to Production Traits and Hair Coat Scores in Crossbred Cattle

    Little is understood about how the diversity of genes, specifically the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and interleukin-8 receptor (CXCR2), are related to reproductive health and how this affects physical traits in cattle. Glucocorticoid receptors have been positively associated with higher milk yields, lactose content, feed intake, and feed conversion rates. Interleukin-8 genes are part of the innate immune response and help with many aspects of female reproductive health, such as protecting the embryo from the maternal immune system during pregnancy. The objective of this research was to identify polymorphisms in the GR and CXCR2 genes and to associate genotypes between the abovementioned polymorphisms and production traits in crossbred cattle. The hypothesis was that polymorphisms will exist for GR and CXCR2 genes and will be linked to production traits. Blood samples were collected from 94 crossbred cattle over a period of 3 years (2012, 2013, 2014) and the DNA was extracted, amplified, and sent to GeneSeek in Lincoln, Nebraska, to be analyzed and genotyped for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP). Phenotypic data, including cow pre-breeding body condition score (BCS) and weight, Julian calving date, calf birth weight, cow weaning BCS and weight, calf weaning weight, calf adjusted 205-day weight, cow efficiency, and hair coat scores (HCS) were collected from the 94 crossbred cattle and analyzed alongside the genotypic results. Significant relationships were determined using t-tests. Single nucleotide polymorphisms were found for the GR and CXCR2 genes and the polymorphisms were significantly related to production traits in cattle. Scientists and breeders could manipulate these genes to produce cattle that are more efficient and possess more desirable production traits

    Analytic, Group-Theoretic Density Profiles for Confined, Correlated N-Body Systems

    Confined quantum systems involving NN identical interacting particles are to be found in many areas of physics, including condensed matter, atomic and chemical physics. A beyond-mean-field perturbation method that is applicable, in principle, to weakly, intermediate, and strongly-interacting systems has been set forth by the authors in a previous series of papers. Dimensional perturbation theory was used, and in conjunction with group theory, an analytic beyond-mean-field correlated wave function at lowest order for a system under spherical confinement with a general two-body interaction was derived. In the present paper, we use this analytic wave function to derive the corresponding lowest-order, analytic density profile and apply it to the example of a Bose-Einstein condensate.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures, accepted by Physics Review A.     Seasonal differences in the photochemistry of the South Pacific: A comparison of observations and model results from PEM-Tropics A and B

    A time-dependent photochemical box model is used to examine the photochemistry of the equatorial and southern subtropical Pacific troposphere with aircraft data obtained during two distinct seasons: the Pacific Exploratory Mission-Tropics A (PEM-Tropics A) field campaign in September and October of 1996 and the Pacific Exploratory Mission-Tropics B (PEM-Tropics B) campaign in March and April of 1999. Model-predicted values were compared to observations for selected species (e.g., NO2, OH, HO2) with generally good agreement. Predicted values of HO2 were larger than those observed in the upper troposphere, in contrast to previous studies which show a general underprediction of HO2 at upper altitudes. Some characteristics of the budgets of HOx, NOx, and peroxides are discussed. The integrated net tendency for O3 is negative over the remote Pacific during both seasons, with gross formation equal to no more than half of the gross destruction. This suggests that a continual supply of O3 into the Pacific region throughout the year must exist in order to maintain O3 levels. Integrated net tendencies for equatorial O3 showed a seasonality, with a net loss of 1.06×1011 molecules cm-2 s-1 during PEM-Tropics B (March) increasing by 50% to 1.60×1011 molecules cm-2 s-1 during PEM-Tropics A (September). The seasonality over the southern subtropical Pacific was somewhat lower, with losses of 1.21×1011 molecules cm-2 s-1 during PEM-Tropics B (March) increasing by 25% to 1.51×1011 molecules cm-2 s-1 during PEM-Tropics A (September). While the larger net losses during PEM-Tropics A were primarily driven by higher concentrations of O3, the ability of the subtropical atmosphere to destroy O3 was ∼30% less effective during the PEM-Tropics A (September) campaign due to a drier atmosphere and higher overhead O3 column amounts.
