Indexación: Scopus. In this article we propose a mediation model for the association between system justification and psychological well-being (i.e., the palliative function of ideology), based on system justification theory and compensatory control theory. Specifically, we argue that endorsing system-justifying beliefs leads to increased perceived personal control, which in turn predicts higher well-being. We used a convenience sample of students from two Peruvian universities. The results showed that system justification was related to general psychological well-being and personal control. In addition, indigenous students rated lower on system justification, general psychological well-being, self-esteem and personal control. Next, we found that the association between system justification and general psychological well-being was stronger among indigenous students, and this relationship was partially mediated by personal control. In addition, we showed that the mediation model is moderated by ethnicity, so that personal control is a mediator only among non-indigenous participants. We conclude that personal control is a mechanism involved in the palliative function of ideology among this group. Finally, we discuss possible explanations for the mechanisms involved in the palliative function of ideology among low-status individuals. © 2018, © 2018 Fundacion Infancia y Aprendizaje.

Spectral plots and the representation and interpretation of biological data

It is basic question in biology and other fields to identify the char- acteristic properties that on one hand are shared by structures from a particular realm, like gene regulation, protein-protein interaction or neu- ral networks or foodwebs, and that on the other hand distinguish them from other structures. We introduce and apply a general method, based on the spectrum of the normalized graph Laplacian, that yields repre- sentations, the spectral plots, that allow us to find and visualize such properties systematically. We present such visualizations for a wide range of biological networks and compare them with those for networks derived from theoretical schemes. The differences that we find are quite striking and suggest that the search for universal properties of biological networks should be complemented by an understanding of more specific features of biological organization principles at different scales.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure

Variation factors involved in carrot sensory appreciation

Sensory analysis is an indispensable tool for understanding the consumers and promoting segmentation in a product such as the carrot. However, one must have first a good knowledge of the sensory space of the carrot, and identify the sources of variation involved in the sensory characterization. Trials were conducted on two years in 2010 and 2011 and two production sites in France. The overall sensory space was characterized from 48 batches representing a wide genetic diversity. This has enabled us to identify varieties that opposed the main criteria i.e. texture, including juicy trait, sweet perception and the potential of bitterness, spicy and chemical aroma. On a smaller sample of orange carrot, two years of tests have highlighted variations due to the production site and varieties, which were modulated by annual differences. The observed variation underlines the need for more research on explaining the causes such as the development cycle and the pedoclimatic conditions.

Elliptic Thermal Correlation Functions and Modular Forms in a Globally Conformal Invariant QFT

Global conformal invariance (GCI) of quantum field theory (QFT) in two and higher space-time dimensions implies the Huygens' principle, and hence, rationality of correlation functions of observable fields (see Commun. Math. Phys. 218 (2001) 417-436; hep-th/0009004). The conformal Hamiltonian HH has discrete spectrum assumed here to be finitely degenerate. We then prove that thermal expectation values of field products on compactified Minkowski space can be represented as finite linear combinations of basic (doubly periodic) elliptic functions in the conformal time variables (of periods 1 and τ\tau) whose coefficients are, in general, formal power series in q1/2=eiπτq^{1/2}=e^{i\pi\tau} involving spherical functions of the "space-like" fields' arguments. As a corollary, if the resulting expansions converge to meromorphic functions, then the finite temperature correlation functions are elliptic. Thermal 2-point functions of free fields are computed and shown to display these features. We also study modular transformation properties of Gibbs energy mean values with respect to the (complex) inverse temperature τ\tau (Im(τ)=β/(2π)>0Im(\tau)=\beta/(2\pi)>0). The results are used to obtain the thermodynamic limit of thermal energy densities and correlation functions.Comment: LaTex. 56 pages.
