    Diverse lines of evidence suggest that amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides causally contribute to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease (AD), the most frequent neurodegenerative disorder. However, the mechanisms by which Aβ impairs neuronal functions remain to be fully elucidated. Previous studies showed that soluble Aβ oligomers interfere with synaptic functions by depleting NMDA-type glutamate receptors (NMDARs) from the neuronal surface and that overexpression of the receptor tyrosine kinase EphB2 can counteract this process. Through pharmacological treatments and biochemical analyses of primary neuronal cultures expressing wild-type or mutant forms of EphB2, we demonstrate that this protective effect of EphB2 depends on its PDZ-binding motif and the presence of neuronal activity but not on its kinase activity. We further present evidence that the protective effect of EphB2 may be mediated by the AMPA-type glutamate receptor subunit GluA2, which can become associated with the PDZ-binding motif of EphB2 through PDZ domain-containing proteins and can promote the retention of NMDARs in the membrane. In addition, we show that the Aβ-induced depletion of surface NMDARs does not depend on several factors that have been implicated in the pathogenesis of Aβ-induced neuronal dysfunction, including aberrant neuronal activity, tau, prion protein (PrP(C)), and EphB2 itself. Thus, although EphB2 does not appear to be directly involved in the Aβ-induced depletion of NMDARs, increasing its expression may counteract this pathogenic process through a neuronal activity- and PDZ-dependent regulation of AMPA-type glutamate receptors

    African American and European American Therapists’ Experiences of Addressing Race in Cross-Racial Psychotherapy Dyads

    Using Consensual Qualitative Research, 12 licensed psychologists’ overall experiences addressing race in psychotherapy were investigated, as were their experiences addressing race in a specific cross-racial therapy dyad. Results indicated that only African American psychologists reported routinely addressing race with clients of color or when race was part of a client’s presenting concern. European American psychologists indicated that they would address race if clients raised the topic, and some reported that they did not normally address race with racially different clients. When discussing a specific cross-racial dyad, African American therapists more often than European American therapists addressed race because they perceived client discomfort. Only European American therapists reported feeling uncomfortable addressing race, but therapists of both races perceived that such discussions had positive effects

    Dagger Mountain, in Sierra del Carmen within Big Bend National Park, Texas, is a 5 km-long, doubly-plunging, southwest-vergent anticline adjacent to a doubly plunging syncline. Dagger Mountain lies near the eastern margins of the Cordilleran orogen and the Basin and Range province. Mapping at 1:12,000 scale reveals details about three phases of Laramide and Basin and Range structures. Mapping and descriptive structural analysis complement previous mapping at 1:12,000 – 1:75,000 scales (Poth, 1979; Moustafa, 1988; Cooper and others, 2011; Turner and others, 2011; Maxwell and others, 1967). Four distinctive formations of Cretaceous age crop out on Dagger Mountain: Santa Elena Limestone, Del Rio Clay, Buda Limestone, and Boquillas Formation. At least two phaneritic, mafic, feldpathoid-rich sills intrude the Boquillas Formation. A similar, possibly correlative sill south of Dagger Mountain is dated at 32.47 ± 0.41 Ma ( 40Ar/39 Ar on groundmass; Morgan and Shanks, 2008). One well-exposed Dagger Mountain sill can be traced from one map-scale fold limb, through the hinge, and into the other limb. The Dagger Mountain anticline is a first-phase (D1) fold. D1 map- and outcrop-scale folds contain subvertical NNW-striking axial planes and subhorizontal fold axes. Second-phase (D2) folds produced NNW and SSE plunges of the DM anticline. D2 map- and outcrop-scale folds display subvertical NE-striking axial planes and subhorizontal fold axes. Third-phase (D3) high-angle faults strike NNW and NW and cross-cut D1 folds and Tertiary sills. Drag during D3 faulting produced D3 folds. Dagger Mountain structures are significant because: a) few polyphase folds have been documented in the Big Bend region, b) the west-verging Dagger Mountain anticline and other D1 folds show fault-propagation fold characteristics, c) the apparently folded Tertiary(?) sill suggests that Laramide deformation at Dagger Mountain is post-32 Ma and unusually recent. Alternatively, the sill could be as old as Cretaceous, or the sill could have intruded both limbs and hinge of an existing fold

    The cataclysmic variable SDSS J1507+52: An eclipsing period bouncer in the Galactic halo

    SDSS J1507+52 is an eclipsing cataclysmic variable consisting of a cool, non-radially pulsating white dwarf and an unusually small sub-stellar secondary. The system has a high space velocity and a very short orbital period of about 67 minutes, well below the usual minimum period for CVs. To explain the existence of this peculiar system, two theories have been proposed. One suggests that SDSS J1507+52 was formed from a detached white-dwarf/brown-dwarf binary. The other theory proposes that the system is a member of the Galactic halo-population. Here, we present ultraviolet spectroscopy of SDSS J1507+52 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope with the aim of distinguishing between these two theories. The UV flux of the system is dominated by emission from the accreting white dwarf. Fits to model stellar atmospheres yield physical parameter estimates of T(eff) = 14200 \pm 500 K, log(g)=8.2 \pm 0.3, vsin(i)=180 \pm 20 kms-1 and [Fe/H]=-1.2 \pm 0.2. These fits suggest a distance towards SDSS J1507+52 of d = 250 \pm 50 pc. The quoted uncertainties include systematic errors associated with the adopted fitting windows and interstellar reddening. Assuming that there is no contribution to the UV flux from a hot, optically thick boundary layer, we find a T(eff) much higher than previously estimated from eclipse analysis. The strongly sub-solar metallicity we infer for SDSS J1507+52 is consistent with that of halo stars at the same space velocity. We therefore conclude that SDSS J1507+52 is a member of the Galactic halo
