    Strong Clustering of Lyman Break Galaxies around Luminous Quasars at z~4

    In the standard picture of structure formation, the first massive galaxies are expected to form at the highest peaks of the density field, which constitute the cores of massive proto-clusters. Luminous quasars (QSOs) at z~4 are the most strongly clustered population known, and should thus reside in massive dark matter halos surrounded by large overdensities of galaxies, implying a strong QSO-galaxy cross-correlation function. We observed six z~4 QSO fields with VLT/FORS exploiting a novel set of narrow band filters custom designed to select Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) in a thin redshift slice of Delta_z~0.3, mitigating the projection effects that have limited the sensitivity of previous searches for galaxies around z>~4 QSOs. We find that LBGs are strongly clustered around QSOs, and present the first measurement of the QSO-LBG cross-correlation function at z~4, on scales of 0.1<~R<~9 Mpc/h (comoving). Assuming a power law form for the cross-correlation function xi=(r/r0_QG)^gamma, we measure r0_QG=8.83^{+1.39}_{-1.51} Mpc/h for a fixed slope of gamma=2.0. This result is in agreement with the expected cross-correlation length deduced from measurements of the QSO and LBG auto-correlation function, and assuming a linear bias model. We also measure a strong auto-correlation of LBGs in our QSO fields finding r0_GG=21.59^{+1.72}_{-1.69} Mpc/h for a fixed slope of gamma=1.5, which is ~4 times larger than the LBG auto-correlation length in random fields, providing further evidence that QSOs reside in overdensities of LBGs.     A review of the extant literature reveals a recent growth in critical criminological analyses of rural crime and societal reactions to it. Nevertheless, rural critical criminology is still in a state of infancy and requires much more development. Thus, heavily influenced by Taylor, Walton, and Young’s(1973) path-breaking book The New Criminology and by research on woman abuse in rural communities, the main objective of this article, then, is twofold: (1) to describe the key reasons for a more fully developed rural critical criminology and (2) to outline some of its key elements.     Small-scale Intensity Mapping: Extended Halos as a Probe of the Ionizing Escape Fraction and Faint Galaxy Populations during Reionization

    We present a new method to quantify the value of the escape fraction of ionizing photons, and the existence of ultra-faint galaxies clustered around brighter objects during the epoch of cosmic reionization, using the diffuse Lyα\alpha, continuum and Hα\alpha emission observed around galaxies at z∼6z\sim6. We model the surface brightness profiles of the diffuse halos considering the fluorescent emission powered by ionizing photons escaping from the central galaxies, and the nebular emission from satellite star-forming sources, by extending the formalisms developed in Mas-Ribas & Dijkstra (2016) and Mas-Ribas et al. (2017). The comparison between our predicted profiles and Lyα\alpha observations at z=5.7z=5.7 and z=6.6z=6.6 favors a low ionizing escape fraction, fescion∼5%f_{\rm esc}^{\rm ion}\sim5\%, for galaxies in the range −19≳MUV≳−21.5-19\gtrsim M_{\rm UV} \gtrsim -21.5. However, uncertainties and possible systematics in the observations do not allow for firm conclusions. We predict Hα\alpha and rest-frame visible continuum observations with JWST, and show that JWST will be able to detect extended (a few tens of kpc) fluorescent Hα\alpha emission powered by ionizing photons escaping from a bright, L≳5L∗L\gtrsim 5L^*, galaxy. Such observations can differentiate fluorescent emission from nebular emission by satellite sources. We discuss how observations and stacking of several objects may provide unique constraints on the escape fraction for faint galaxies and/or the abundance of ultra-faint radiation sources.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, re-submitted after referee report to Ap

Fuel mixing atomization, fuel mixture distribution enhancement and combustion reaction enhancement are improved by unsteady plasma torch energization, integral formation of the heat exchanger, fuel injection nozzle and plasma torch anode in a more compact, low-profile arrangement which is not intrusive on a highspeed air flow with which the invention is particularly effective and further enhanced by use of nitrogen as a feedstock material and inclusion of high pressure gases in the fuel to cause effervescence during injection
