    SOAP Services with Clarens: Guide for Developers and Administrators

    The Clarens application server enables secure, asynchronous SOAP services to run on a Grid cluster such as one of those of the TeraGrid. There is a Client, who wants to use the service and understands the application domain enough to form a reasonable service request; a Developer, who is a power-user of the TeraGrid, who understands both Clarens and the application domain, and creates and deploys a service on a TeraGrid head node; and there is a Root system administrator, who controls the Clarens installation and the cluster on which it runs. The purpose of this document is to provide all of the information a service developer needs to know in order to deploy a Clarens service, with information also provided for the system administrator of the Clarens installation.     Several technical problems are associated with the rolling-assisted biaxially textured substrates (RABiTS) method of fabricating long lengths of high-temperature superconducting wire. For example, controlling or eliminating thermal grain-boundary groove defects on the Ni base layer of the substrate is an important concern. Thermal Grooves on the surface of the Ni may have the potential to cause cracks or growth defects to form in the buffer and superconducting layers which are epitaxially deposited on the Ni.Thus, the effects of annealing time, equilibrium angle, and absolute misorientation angle on thermal grain-boundary grooving in cube-textured nickel were investigated.Small samples of RABiTS Ni were recrystallized at 800°C for times of 10, 30, 60,and 120 minutes to produce diffusion-induced thermal grooves on their surfaces. The Linear dimensions and equilibrium angles these grooves were measured using atomic force microscopy. The misorientations of grains at triple point junctions were measured using electron back-scatter diffraction, and the cube-texture of the samples was analyzed with x ray diffraction. Grain size measurements were also made on each sample.The linear dimensions of grooves evolved with annealing time in accordance withMullins’ theory of thermal grooving. Average groove depths increased with increasing equilibrium angle; however, there was only a slight tendency for groove depth to increase with increasing absolute misorientation angle. In general, groove depths did not exceed650 Å. The cube texture and grain size of the samples were typical of RABiTS Ni

    Concerto for Jazz Trombone and Wind Ensemble is an original piece that incorporates distinct elements of jazz music within a largely classical framework. The analysis presented examines the role of improvisation, the use of blues tonality, and the incorporation of quintessential jazz harmonies throughout the work. My research explores the way in which these jazz elements operate in the context of a prototypical concerto format with a wind ensemble instrumentation and classical forms. The compositional devices and musical components of each section are examined in great detail, from the motivic unity of the first movement to the blending of blues and Hungarian-Gyspy styles in the third movement. By using a unique combination of musical languages and compositional techniques, Concerto for Jazz Trombone and Wind Ensemble aims to contribute a new type of piece to the solo trombone repertoire — one in which the trombonist balances the more traditional concerto soloist role with that of creative improviser

    County Transportation Officials’ Perceptions of Timber Transportation Economic Importance, Infrastructure Impact, and Weight Limits in Georgia, USA

    Log truck gross vehicle weight (GVW) limits in the US state of Georgia are among the lowest of any timber-producing state in the US and are far below GVW limits in countries such as Australia, Canada, Finland, and Sweden. In the state of Georgia, log trucks travel on county and state roads between harvest sites and forest industry mills. Most county roads were not constructed to support heavy trucks and so log trucks may damage these roads, even at the low GVW limits allowed in Georgia. Local governments sometimes enact timber harvesting ordinances to constrain timber transportation and often oppose efforts to increase GVW limits. The purpose of this study was to document local transportation officials’ perceptions of timber harvesting and transportation and to measure their support or opposition to alternative log truck weights and configurations. A telephone survey of county transportation superintendents or their equivalent was conducted in Georgia during the summer of 2020. Forty-three county officials responded to the survey, yielding a response rate of 43%. Ninety-eight percent of respondents reported that timber harvesting was important to their local economy, and 86% agreed that local governments were cooperative with log truck owners. County officials were concerned about damage from overweight log trucks and mud on public roads. The average preferred GVW and tandem axle weight limits were approximately 10% lower than the existing limits. County officials opposed six- and seven-axle 45,359 kg (100,000 lbs) GVW configurations but did support allowing log trucks to operate on interstate highways at current state weight limits. Findings suggest that logging businesses and mills should focus on improving compliance with weight laws, improving the condition of log trucks, and maintaining or improving relationships with the public and local government officials

    Productivity and Cost of Post-Tornado Salvage Logging in Upper Coastal Plain of South Carolina, USA

    Salvage harvesting is common in the US South following natural disasters such as tornadoes and hurricanes; nevertheless, few studies have evaluated the productivity and costs of these harvests because of their geographic dispersion and the short interval between natural disasters and salvage harvesting. An Enhanced Fujita Scale 3 (EF3) tornado with winds in excess of 250 km per hour struck Aiken County, South Carolina in April of 2020, uprooting trees and severing other stems above breast height. The goal of this study was to estimate the productivity and cost of salvage harvesting in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stands following severe tornado damage. Salvage harvests were conducted with a rubber-tired drive-to-tree feller-buncher, grapple skidder, tracked loader, and chipper. All stems were chipped and used to produce energy; no roundwood was produced from the harvests. Elemental time-and-motion studies were conducted in three pulpwood-sized stands (<30 cm large-end diameter) and three sawtimber-sized stands (≥30 cm large-end diameter). Hourly harvesting costs were estimated using the machine rate method and per-ton costs were estimated using a modified version of the Auburn Harvesting Analyzer. Skidding productivity was low in each harvest unit, but especially so in the three pulpwood-sized stands because of stem breakage and low weight per stem. Harvesting costs averaged 29.78and29.78 and 19.97 (USD) per tonne (onboard truck) in the pulpwood- and sawtimber-sized stands, respectively. High salvage harvesting costs mean that landowners can expect significantly reduced stumpage prices from these harvests; nonetheless, landowners do benefit from reduced reforestation costs. Harvesting promptly after a tornado can reduce harvesting costs and increase timber value recovery

    This revision is dated November 1, 2003.A set of consumer-level characteristic demand models were estimated to determine the level of brand equity for pork and beef meat cuts. Results indicate that brand premiums and discounts vary by private, national, and store brands; and brand equity varies across meat cuts carrying the same brand name. Other results are that product size discounts are linear, meat items on sale are significantly discounted to non-sale items, specialty stores typically do not garner higher prices than supermarket/grocery store, and warehouse/super center stores typically premium price to supermarket/ grocery stores.The authors gratefully acknowledge the Beef Checkoff program for funding the acquisition of the National Panel Diary data used for this analysis

    Warpage issues in large area mould embedding technologies

    The need for higher communications speed, heterogeneous integration and further miniaturisation have increased demand in developing new 3D integrated packaging technologies which include wafer-level moulding and chip-to-wafer interconnections . Wafer-level moulding refers to the embedding of multiple chips or heterogeneous systems on the wafer scale. This can be achieved through a relatively new technology consisting of thermal compression moulding of granular or liquid epoxy moulding compounds. Experimental measurements from compression moulding on 8” blank wafers have shown an unexpected tendency to warp into a cylindrical-shape following cooling from the moulding temperature to room temperature. Wafer warpage occurs primarily as a result of a mismatch between the coefficient of thermal expansion of the resin compound and the Si wafer. This paper will delve into possible causes of such asymmetric warpage related to mould, dimensional and material characteristics using finite element (FE) software (ANSYS Mechanical). The FE model of the resin on wafer deposition will be validated against the measurement results and will be used to deduce appropriate guidelines for low warpage wafer encapsulation.peer-reviewe
