Successful medical management of an epidural abscess in a dog

A seven-month-old entire male dobermann presented with acute onset neck pain and left thoracic limb lameness. The dog had a similar episode eight weeks before presentation that responded to meloxicam. A cervical spinal epidural abscess secondary to Staphylococcus pseudintermedius bacteraemia was diagnosed following investigations, including MRI of the cervical vertebral column and blood cultures. Treatment with cephalexin, gabapentin and meloxicam was started. The dog was doing clinically well one month later. A control MRI and radiographs of the cervical vertebral column showed evidence of discospondylitis and resolution of the primary lesion, therefore the treatment course with cephalexin was continued. Three months after initial presentation the clinical signs had resolved, radiographs showed improvement of the discospondylitis and antibiotics were stopped. Seven months later the dog continued doing well with no relapse

Vocal behaviour, geographic variation, and the evolution of song in Troglodytes wrens

Animal acoustic signals are important for mate attraction, resource defense, and species recognition. When vocalizations diverge between closely related groups they can play a key role in speciation. Therefore it is important for biologists to describe the vocalizations of wild animals, to document geographic differences in acoustic signals, and to evaluate the relationship between acoustic variation, genetic variation, and ecological variation. In this dissertation, I study the songs of New World wrens in the genus Troglodytes , small territorial songbirds distributed throughout the Americas, including several oceanic islands, that are well known for their loud, complex songs. I conducted observational and experimental studies of Troglodytes wrens in the field, and morphometric studies of museum specimens. In chapter 1, I provide background information on the topics in the subsequent chapters. In chapters 2 and 3, I provide the first empirical description of the vocal behaviour of two species of Troglodytes wrens from Mexico: Brown-throated Wrens and Cozumel Wrens. In chapter 4, I quantify geographic variation in songs of wrens within the House Wren species complex--a group of birds noted for taxonomic controversies--demonstrating that several subspecies show acoustic differentiation on par with many species. In chapter 5, I show that patterns of geographic variation in vocalizations predict genetic divergence, and that the fine structural characteristics of Troglodytes songs, as well as birds\u27 responses to playback of those songs, are associated with phylogenetic relatedness. In chapter 6, I show that songs vary at a continental scale and that several aspects of wren vocalizations are closely associated with both phylogenetic differentiation and ecological variation. Taken together, my results suggest that songs of Troglodytes wrens exhibit substantial geographic variation, that they encode species identity that is used to distinguish conspecific rivals, and that they show evidence of adaptation to ecological features. My research stands as an example of how acoustic signals can be use for resolving taxonomic problems. My findings enhance our understanding of how acoustic diversity originated and how fine structural characteristics are constrained, adapted, and maintained through evolutionary lineages

PREVALENCIA DE LA HIPERTENSION PULMONAR COMO COMPLICACION EN PACIENTES CON ENFERMEDAD RENAL CRONICA TERMINAL EN HEMODIALISIS EN EL HOSPITAL GENERAL DE ECATEPEC “DR. JOSE MARIA RODRIGUEZ”

RESUMEN ANTECEDENTES: La Enfermedad Renal Crónica presenta múltiples complicaciones Cardiovasculares y de estas una de las menos estudiadas es la HIPERTENSION PULMONAR, la cual se presenta más aun en los pacientes con terapia sustitutiva de Hemodiálisis. MATERIAL Y METODOS: Se realizó un estudio Descriptivo, Retrospectivo y Transversal. En base al estudio de 46 pacientes que se encuentran con el diagnostico de Enfermedad Renal Crónica Terminal en terapia sustitutiva de la función renal a base de Hemodiálisis a los cuales se les realizo un Ecocardiograma Transtoracico Tisular y Pulsado para valorar la existencia de hipertensión pulmonar. RESULTADOS: De los 46 pacientes en Hemodiálisis, solo uno fue excluido del estudio por presentar datos compatibles con hipocinesia miocardica, así un total de 45 estudios fueron incluidos. Se reporta que 13 pacientes (19.11%) No presentaron hipertensión Pulmonar y que 55 pacientes (80.88%) presentaron hipertensión pulmonar, de los cuales 41 pacientes (74.54%%) siendo hipertensión Pulmonar Leve, 11 pacientes (20%) de hipertensión Pulmonar Moderada y 3 paciente (5.45%) de hipertensión Pulmonar Severa. CONCLUSIONES: De los pacientes de la Unidad de Hemodiálisis del Hospital General de Ecatepec “Dr. José María Rodríguez” un alto porcentaje (Incidencia) presentan hipertensión pulmonar y que estos se encuentran Sub-diagnosticados

Accompanying Symptoms Overlap during Attacks in Menière’s Disease and Vestibular Migraine

Journal Article;Menière's disease and vestibular migraine (VM) are the most common causes of spontaneous recurrent vertigo. The current diagnostic criteria for the two disorders are mainly based on patients' symptoms, and no biological marker is available. When applying these criteria, an overlap of the two disorders is occasionally observed in clinical practice. Therefore, the present prospective multicenter study aimed to identify accompanying symptoms that may help to differentiate between MD, VM, and probable vestibular migraine (pVM). Two hundred and sixty-eight patients were included in the study (MD: n = 119, VM: n = 84, pVM: n = 65). Patients with MD suffered mainly from accompanying auditory symptoms (tinnitus, fullness of ear, and hearing loss), while accompanying migraine symptoms (migraine-type headache, photo-/phonophobia, visual aura), anxiety, and palpitations were more common during attacks of VM. However, it has to be noted that a subset of MD patients also experienced (migraine-type) headache during the attacks. On the other hand, some VM/pVM patients reported accompanying auditory symptoms. The female/male ratio was statistically higher in VM/pVM as compared to MD, while the age of onset was significantly lower in the former two. The frequency of migraine-type headache was significantly higher in VM as compared to both pVM and MD. Accompanying headache of any type was observed in declining order in VM, pVM, and MD. In conclusion, the present study confirms a considerable overlap of symptoms in MD, VM, and pVM. In particular, we could not identify any highly specific symptom for one of the three entities. It is rather the combination of symptoms that should guide diagnostic reasoning. New insights into the chemistry of thiolate-protected palladium nanoparticles

This paper establishes the chemical nature of Pd nanoparticles protected by alkanethiolates that were prepared through a ligand place-exchange approach and the two-phase method, first developed for Au nanoparticles by Brust and Schiffrin. After 10 years since the first study on this kind of Pd nanoparticles was published, the surface composition of the particles is a matter of debate in the literature and it has not been unambiguously assessed. The nanoparticles were studied by means of several techniques: UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The experimental data, obtained for the 3 nm diameter Pd particles, prepared by both synthetic routes, are consistent with nanoparticles composed by Pd(0) cores surrounded by a submonolayer of sulfide species, which are protected by alkanethiolates. Also, we unambiguously demonstrate that the chemical nature of these particles is very similar to that experimentally found for alkanethiolate-modified bulk Pd. The results from this paper are important not only for handling thiolate-protected Pd nanoparticles in catalysis and sensing, but also for the basic comprehension of metallic nanoparticles and the relation of their surface structure with the synthesis method.Fil: Corthey, Gastón. Estados emocionales en tiempos de pandemia; transformaciones de la educación universitaria

The present houses situations that promote the unavoidable change in education, the economy, and society in general. The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered emotional contrasts, including depression, but also hostility. In this work, various academic materials are analyzed, which show the emotional impacts of the pandemic on society, which impact education and require a transformation of methodologies and processes with an ideal vision for new professional challenges.Emotions play a critical role in future job challenges. The results of this work reveal that the pandemic has broadly affected society, affective bonds have become more complex and university activities are the consequence of a set of reasons that motivate it to change form and substance. La pandemia por COVID-19 ha desencadenado contrastes emocionales, que incluyen depresión, pero también incluyen hostilidad. En este trabajo se analizan diversos materiales académicos, que muestran los impactos emocionales de la pandemia en la sociedad, que impactan la educación y exigen una transformación de metodologías y procesos con una visión idónea para los nuevos retos profesionales. Las emociones juegan un papel fundamental en los desafíos laborales del futuro. Los resultados de este trabajo revelan que la pandemia ha afectado de forma amplia a la sociedad, los vínculos afectivos se han vuelto más complejos y las actividades universitarias son consecuencia de un conjunto de razones que la motivan a cambiar de forma y de fondo.
